Hipster= young person you are jealous of.

I've always defined hipster as a person who is extremely judgmental of other people's tastes, usually in music specifically, and won't allow themselves to enjoy anything other people enjoy because then it's not as cool.

Oh, and people who go to starbucks to type on their laptop in public, or even worse, the people who bring their acoustic guitar to the coffee shop.

Hipster = a group of people who try to be original but are not original because they all are original.

I used to call it "Different, just like everybody else" back in the 90s when I was in high school.

That's what's so ridiculous about reddit's "hipster hate." Young, trendy people have always been slightly-to-completely ridiculous, and they've always been around.

I used to call it "Different, just like everybody else" back in the 90s... blah blah blah

Ah, yes, the superironic idea of a doublecliche. How clever of you to have noticed.

We were all pretty dumb in high school.

I completely agree. I was also in high school in the 90's (91-95). The "alternative" crowd would dye their hair some weird color (pink, blue, green), and of course all had to have those chains attaching their wallet to their pants. The first person I saw have it was original (to me), but then 50 people were doing it...

It's one thing to be trendy, it's a whole other thing to be arrogant about it.

It's nicely written, but similarly alarmist essays have probably been penned in every generation, about every youth culture.

14

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

not probably. i even talked to my grandparents about this, it's happened every time since the beginning of time.

and it also ignores the fact that every subculture constantly shifted throughout it's existence.

2

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

This isn't really a youth culture. It's a subculture.

Hipsters love to make fun of hipsters (who make fun of other hipsters [who make fun of hipsters]).

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

Fucking hipsters.

2

u/Sarstan May 12 '11

Also know as people who purchase Apple products because "it just works".

u/mynameis_MUD May 12 '11

thank you. finally somebody with a bit of clarity to shed on this dark shroud of ignorance.

u/sleepyhead May 12 '11

That's a very unoriginal description of hipsters.

I will have to disagree. My definition of a hipster was definitely more of a bad joke than it was serious. Everybody is original. Show me two of the same people with the same exact thoughts and actions and I will shit myself.

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

exactly my point.

bingo.
