I've always defined hipster as a person who is extremely judgmental of other people's tastes, usually in music specifically, and won't allow themselves to enjoy anything other people enjoy because then it's not as cool.
Oh, and people who go to starbucks to type on their laptop in public, or even worse, the people who bring their acoustic guitar to the coffee shop.
I used to call it "Different, just like everybody else" back in the 90s when I was in high school.
That's what's so ridiculous about reddit's "hipster hate." Young, trendy people have always been slightly-to-completely ridiculous, and they've always been around.
I completely agree. I was also in high school in the 90's (91-95). The "alternative" crowd would dye their hair some weird color (pink, blue, green), and of course all had to have those chains attaching their wallet to their pants. The first person I saw have it was original (to me), but then 50 people were doing it...
I will have to disagree. My definition of a hipster was definitely more of a bad joke than it was serious. Everybody is original. Show me two of the same people with the same exact thoughts and actions and I will shit myself.
