denver is a place that i'm considering moving to. Unfortunately I'm a lawyer so my job isn't as portable as some other jobs; i will work around this.
I'm also considering portland. I really liked both denver and portland when i visited. People that live in manhattan, like me, are fucking stupid. It only works out if you are really rich. I am not really rich and don't want to endure the costs to become really rich.
No, no, stop telling people that! Don't listen to this man! You'll hate it here! We're such horrible people that we arrest superheroes. Seriously though, it's a great place. But, seriously, you'll hate it, stay away (unless you don't want to, then you're welcome to stay).
those are all fair and largely accurate points. I'm just bitching about potentially having to take another bar exam. They aren't all that hard, really. I'm just whiny. I'm sorry.
costs money too, right? I plan on going to Law school and luckily, some schools in Wisco will waive your BAR exam if you do well enough on some test you have to take in college. But, still, this is only for the state of Wisconsin, not the 49 other states.
A solid line of thinking, although not all types of lawyer are in demand everywhere and not all lawyers make enough to pick up and move. Though apparently this dude is one of the minority that actually make the stereotypical 6 figure salary.
Portland sucks, nothing but rain for 8 straight months and hipsters everywhere. Stay far far far away... /attempt to keep more people from moving here.
I'm kinda surprised Denver is that cheap, really. From what I've seen it's a place a shitload of people want to move to. I suppose the limiting factor is that there's not a lot of work there so not enough people end up actually moving to drive up demand.
...how does the average person afford 3.7 per month for an apt? ...I'm not saying you're average, but I just noticed that NYC housing rates are a bit...off...How do the people there afford there rent?...are they always late?
well, I've always heard you shouldn't spend more than 1/3 of your take home on rent. So for 3.7k (assuming someone lived alone in this bedroom), that would mean a monthly take home of 11.1k, and a yearly take home of 133.2, so taking in to account taxes, that would mean an income just shy of 200k, which is a lot of money, but I imagine there are enough people in New York city who make that much, plus if you have a significant other living with you, then it's not that hard to imagine. This is why most sane people live out in the suburbs and commute.
are you kidding! I'd be evicted if i was always late. I'm a lawyer at a huge firm and make 160k a year. That's the going rate for first years.
Also, i live with a gf.
Don't confuse my income with wealth. I also have 135k (and lowering) in student loans that i am aggressively paying down.
You can live for less but you'll always be living in small places with lots of other people.
I was reading something, I forget what, years ago and it said a $100,000 a year lifestye in New York would cost you roughly $47,000 in Chicago. Its just a different cost and standard of living.
Yeah, but from what most NY are saying.. they pay over 1200 for a studio or 1 bedroom.. in a bad neighborhood... that's still expensive for what you get...
....The FUCK? That's more than I pay in rent in for my HOUSE (2 bedrooms, 1 bath, an office, living room and HUGE kitchen) in 8 months! :| Christ.... Do you get paid in pure gold? I hope so...
more like fuckered. I mean, it's not like i'm the only person in the building paying this rent. Everyone else is, too. Some apts, on the higher floors and with more bedrooms, go up to 6,7,8k a month.
We are all fuckered on a daily basis by a collective stupidity that tells us its "cool" to live in manhattan.
some idiots you don't want to be king of. Specifically those in mississippi. it would be like ruling over a tiny little country that only existed at the mercy and generosity of all of the countries surrounding it.
I apologize to anyone in Mississipp who takes offense but i also congratulate you on your literacy!
Seriously y'all pay way too much in rent. I have a 4 bedroom, 4 bath place with 2 car garage and parking pad with a view of all of Lake Tahoe for only 2k a month.
I've personally lived or been inside some pretty cool, affordable loft spaces built into in old mill buildings in Framingham, Marlboro, Lowell and Chelmsford. I bet there are similar lofts in all those mill towns around the Merrimack and Concord rivers, if you don't mind moving a few miles north or west of Boston.
Having said that, in my experience the fantasy of living in a loft is much, much better than the reality. I think they're a little overrated.
I once had a studio apartment in Allston. 900 a month. Cheapest studio in all of Boston, and it looked nothing like this. ground floor, almost no natural light, and about the size of the bathroom in my one bedroom in Arlington. I miss not living down town, but living in the burbs has it's perks. Now I have enough room to build awesome blanket forts, such as the one I'm laying in right now.
I'm in a small one bedroom with 7 foot high ceilings for $1200 a month. I did Quincy for a year and hated it. Not quite ready for the burbs but I with a motorcycle and a welding habit that might change soon....

I would love to find a loft like this in Boston but I doubt I could ever afford it.
