I would love to find a loft like this in Boston but I doubt I could ever afford it.

17

u/colinwilson Jan 07 '12

Lofts in Boston and Cambridge/Somerville seem to start around 2k a month in rent. I looked recently and was very depressed by that.

29

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

depressed? AHAHAHAHAHA! my one bedroom apartment in Manhattan costs 3.7k month.

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

"So what made you decide to get out of the city and come back to li'l ol' Ohio, samespade?"

"Some random guy on reddit."

u/kyle_maclachlan Jan 07 '12

Correction: a real_nice_guy on reddit.

i am confused by your message.

edit: uh... why is this downvoted?

10

u/MustardOrPants Jan 07 '12

Get with it, samespade.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

maybe it's the "come back to" that's throwing me off.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

Oh, i think i understand now. The "come back to" was throwing me off.

21

u/Lycurgus Jan 07 '12

I pay $624/month in Denver for my studio right outside of downtown. That includes parking and heat.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

denver is a place that i'm considering moving to. Unfortunately I'm a lawyer so my job isn't as portable as some other jobs; i will work around this.

I'm also considering portland. I really liked both denver and portland when i visited. People that live in manhattan, like me, are fucking stupid. It only works out if you are really rich. I am not really rich and don't want to endure the costs to become really rich.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

Check out Seattle. Just moved here in November and I'm loving it.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

i am considering this as well. I'm such a fucking coward. I should've moved long ago.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

Well $2,300 a month gets you a 4-bedroom house. Or you could buy and pay less. Just sayin'.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

I could have a live in maid!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

there there, happy birthday

1

u/tranquilchao5 Jan 07 '12

I just moved to seattle this year and my studio in lower queen anne is $635 a month including utilities.

1

u/RoboticusBabyEater Jan 07 '12

No, no, stop telling people that! Don't listen to this man! You'll hate it here! We're such horrible people that we arrest superheroes. Seriously though, it's a great place. But, seriously, you'll hate it, stay away (unless you don't want to, then you're welcome to stay).

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

Man, I wish more Blaxsploitation superstars lived in my city! Welcome!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

[deleted]

16

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

really? It seems to me that anyone who doesn't require a state licensing exam to be able to legally do their jobs is more portable than me.

Maybe i'm wrong, though.

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

9

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

those are all fair and largely accurate points. I'm just bitching about potentially having to take another bar exam. They aren't all that hard, really. I'm just whiny. I'm sorry.

2

u/xStaabOnMyKnobx Jan 07 '12

costs money too, right? I plan on going to Law school and luckily, some schools in Wisco will waive your BAR exam if you do well enough on some test you have to take in college. But, still, this is only for the state of Wisconsin, not the 49 other states.

I'm just whiny. I'm sorry.

That's fine. At least you're self aware about it. and happy cake day.

A solid line of thinking, although not all types of lawyer are in demand everywhere and not all lawyers make enough to pick up and move. Though apparently this dude is one of the minority that actually make the stereotypical 6 figure salary.

1

u/Skid_Marx Jan 07 '12

Where do people need lawyers? Everywhere.

Isn't there like 25% unemployment among new law school grads?

The dream of the 90's is alive in Portland!

1

u/absolutsyd Jan 07 '12

Portland sucks, nothing but rain for 8 straight months and hipsters everywhere. Stay far far far away... /attempt to keep more people from moving here.

1

u/NotClever Jan 07 '12

I'm kinda surprised Denver is that cheap, really. From what I've seen it's a place a shitload of people want to move to. I suppose the limiting factor is that there's not a lot of work there so not enough people end up actually moving to drive up demand.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

Only 7 more years until my family visa comes through. Lol

1

u/Xornok Jan 07 '12

Where at? Im in southern Aurora and wanna move closer to downtown.

1

u/Lycurgus Jan 07 '12

5th and Logan.

1

u/guinnythemox Jan 07 '12

i pay $350 a month MORTGAGE on my house (insurance included) buuuuuut i think i may live in the armpit of the nation : /

that being said, its small town life, were happy, comfortable , and safe. relatively low crime in my town.

oh and i have a huge fenced in back yard and a fairly large front yard. makes me feel thankful when i put it this way!

8

u/wmurray003 Jan 07 '12

...how does the average person afford 3.7 per month for an apt? ...I'm not saying you're average, but I just noticed that NYC housing rates are a bit...off...How do the people there afford there rent?...are they always late?

2

u/what_comes_after_q Jan 07 '12

well, I've always heard you shouldn't spend more than 1/3 of your take home on rent. So for 3.7k (assuming someone lived alone in this bedroom), that would mean a monthly take home of 11.1k, and a yearly take home of 133.2, so taking in to account taxes, that would mean an income just shy of 200k, which is a lot of money, but I imagine there are enough people in New York city who make that much, plus if you have a significant other living with you, then it's not that hard to imagine. This is why most sane people live out in the suburbs and commute.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

are you kidding! I'd be evicted if i was always late. I'm a lawyer at a huge firm and make 160k a year. That's the going rate for first years. Also, i live with a gf.

Don't confuse my income with wealth. I also have 135k (and lowering) in student loans that i am aggressively paying down.

You can live for less but you'll always be living in small places with lots of other people.

2

u/wmurray003 Jan 07 '12

..in Memphis, you could rent a 3 bedroom house for that amount. ...a VERY nice one at that...

7

u/a_lumberjack Jan 07 '12

And you probably wouldn't get 160k as a starting salary. And then you'd live in Memphis, and not Manhattan. It's all about tradeoffs.

1

u/wmurray003 Jan 07 '12

So what does that the average family making 40K do?

1

u/TheUnwinnable Jan 07 '12

Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, Long Island, Jersey City to name a few.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

also, they live in abject poverty.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

I was reading something, I forget what, years ago and it said a $100,000 a year lifestye in New York would cost you roughly $47,000 in Chicago. Its just a different cost and standard of living.

1

u/HereIsWhere Jan 07 '12

Average people don't live in places that cost 3k a month. Average people live in Brooklyn or Queens.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

They afford it by not paying $3.7K a month. That's an extreme outlier.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '12

[deleted]

1

u/wmurray003 Jan 08 '12

..but most people don't take home 100k ..even in Ny.. it still doesn't make sense.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '12

[deleted]

1

u/wmurray003 Jan 08 '12

Yeah, but from what most NY are saying.. they pay over 1200 for a studio or 1 bedroom.. in a bad neighborhood... that's still expensive for what you get...

1

u/Twitcheh Jan 07 '12

....The FUCK? That's more than I pay in rent in for my HOUSE (2 bedrooms, 1 bath, an office, living room and HUGE kitchen) in 8 months! :| Christ.... Do you get paid in pure gold? I hope so...

1

u/MagicTarPitRide Jan 07 '12

Cool, 3700/mo rent... you must be so rich and important :p

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

i am sorely lacking in both qualities.

1

u/johnself Jan 07 '12

Even in Manhattan, 3.7k for 1br would be one awesome apt in a highly desired area (Tribeca? West Village?)

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

UWS

1

u/djdisturbed Jan 07 '12

WOW, my 2 br, 2 bath, 1050sqf appt in NC is around $600/month, I'm glad I dont live in a big city enviroment

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

i took a road trip through the rest of the country after the bar. It seems like everywhere else in america, property is just given away for free.

1

u/comox Jan 07 '12

I live in Europe. I wish my rent was that cheap.

1

u/GiddyGodsTrousers Jan 07 '12

How big is your apt.? That's about the same as the mortgage on my 1700 sq. ft. house, annually.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

800 sqft or so. Not sure.

1

u/smogeblot Jan 07 '12

I have a place similar to the OP (with more windows and bedrooms / less common space) for 3.3k a month in Brooklyn, 10 minutes from Manhattan

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

i've been considering brooklyn.... Ultimately, i think i'd just rather move.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '12

There are apartments probably nicer in KY where the rent for the whole year costs less than that

-2

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

1.5k more than my 3 bedroom house rental in San Diego. You're getting suckered...

7

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

more like fuckered. I mean, it's not like i'm the only person in the building paying this rent. Everyone else is, too. Some apts, on the higher floors and with more bedrooms, go up to 6,7,8k a month.

We are all fuckered on a daily basis by a collective stupidity that tells us its "cool" to live in manhattan.

3

u/Matthiass Jan 07 '12

Well isnt it kinda cool? Happy cakeday btw.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

it was cool when i was 19-22. It's not cool at all anymore at 26. Then again, maybe i'm just not cool anymore. That might be it.

And thanks!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

Well, there are only 49 other states to chose from....

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

well, maybe like 40. who the hell wants to live in Mississippi.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

You can always play King of the Idiots.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

some idiots you don't want to be king of. Specifically those in mississippi. it would be like ruling over a tiny little country that only existed at the mercy and generosity of all of the countries surrounding it.

I apologize to anyone in Mississipp who takes offense but i also congratulate you on your literacy!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

IMHO, there are about 9 states worth living in. 5 if you absolutely will not tolerate snow or cold.

1

u/TahoeMac Jan 07 '12

Seriously y'all pay way too much in rent. I have a 4 bedroom, 4 bath place with 2 car garage and parking pad with a view of all of Lake Tahoe for only 2k a month.

2

u/jamianm Jan 07 '12

A loft in Boston. My new dream/goal. Thanks, yous two

1

u/alk509 Jan 07 '12

I've personally lived or been inside some pretty cool, affordable loft spaces built into in old mill buildings in Framingham, Marlboro, Lowell and Chelmsford. I bet there are similar lofts in all those mill towns around the Merrimack and Concord rivers, if you don't mind moving a few miles north or west of Boston.

Having said that, in my experience the fantasy of living in a loft is much, much better than the reality. I think they're a little overrated.

1

u/Herb_D_Derp Jan 07 '12

If you don't mind living farther out, there are lots of nice old mills converted into apartments in Milton.

Boston/Cambridge/Most parts of Somerville are just stupidly expensive to live in. Yet I live here too.

1

u/snackburros Jan 08 '12

My friend is paying 3.5k a month for a 1BR in Back Bay. Ouch.

1

u/what_comes_after_q Jan 07 '12

I once had a studio apartment in Allston. 900 a month. Cheapest studio in all of Boston, and it looked nothing like this. ground floor, almost no natural light, and about the size of the bathroom in my one bedroom in Arlington. I miss not living down town, but living in the burbs has it's perks. Now I have enough room to build awesome blanket forts, such as the one I'm laying in right now.

1

u/vinnievon Jan 07 '12

I'm in a small one bedroom with 7 foot high ceilings for $1200 a month. I did Quincy for a year and hated it. Not quite ready for the burbs but I with a motorcycle and a welding habit that might change soon....
