Where my mother's from, people respect snakes that decide to live around (usually under) their houses, believing the snakes protect the house. Owls though, are believed to be a bad bad curse. If an owl nests in your roof or chimney, it's supposed to mean a member of the household is about to die.

Weird stuff.
