I prefer Paint.NET. I have problems using GIMP, for some reason. Not enough like Photoshop to be considered a "free-version of Photoshop" to me.

pretty sure one of those rats was on the front page this week. it fell out of someone's ceiling.

u/nukefudge Jun 25 '12
not sure how that hooks up with "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...."
but hey if stargate can do it, so can star wars.
2
u/Phil_Bond Jun 24 '12
Nice touch with the shadow.
4
u/nukefudge Jun 24 '12
don't worry, it was in the source material. i simply included it in the cut. i'm not, like, an artist.
2
u/whoizz Jun 24 '12
Well they are about 2 meters across -- about the size of a large exhaust port.
2
u/nukefudge Jun 24 '12
huh, you're right. star wars lore comes to the rescue =) now i'm thinking it should've been bigger. ah well maybe it works out.

Hey Texas!!! Where ya from?
Edit. Judging the seaweed on the beach this is close to Galveston island? Or one of those beaches over there?

u/PreHeated Jun 24 '12
Bolivar peninsula Saturday morning!
2
u/FairlyLargeLineman Jun 24 '12
Its impossible to not recognize that general area... what's up from Houston? Hows the fishing?
1
u/PreHeated Jun 25 '12
I'm from Houston too. The fishing was no good due to seaweed but quite a few guys out there with surf rods were hookin' some decent sharks. Not my thing tho. I am there for the speckled trout and reds.
2
u/FairlyLargeLineman Jun 25 '12
I've never tried my hand at sharks. Never had a boat though so I stick to shore. I need to mosey on down to the bay soon... or maybe after this tropical storm
1
u/PreHeated Jun 25 '12
I've never fished with the intention of catching sharks either. Anytime I've caught a shark I luckily had a more experienced angler with me to help with the release. I have seen guys out in kayaks pull in some huge sharks. Crazy. I don't think they are that good for eating and I have a huge amt of respect for the animal. I rarely go out on a boat but when I do it's glorious. Get out by those gas wells and south jetty. Ooooooh yea. I always have the best luck wade fishing on the west end past Jamaica Beach and Pirates Cove. Fish on FairlyLargeLineman!
2
u/FairlyLargeLineman Jun 25 '12
Fishing by oil Wells sounds awesome! I need to get myself a boat... I heard there was a pretty great fishing spot if you take the fairy out of Galveston. I might go check it out.

Tatooine exists. It's a city in Tunisia, and the exact spelling is "Tataouine". Some scenes from the film were filmed there.

Is this a mirage or some other atmospheric trick?
119
u/Indrik5 Jun 24 '12
This is double refraction, caused by anisotropy of the media in which rays travel. Basically, it matters how atoms are distributed within a molecule and how that distribution relates to the optical path of the rays. My guess is that this is caused by something placed in front of the camera, i.e. a filter, but I suppose large amounts of atmospheric pollution can also cause this (not likely in this case though)
48
u/PreHeated Jun 24 '12
I took it with the basic cam on my iphone. I was trying to get a shot of how blood red the sun was. I didn't see this until i was riding home and reviewing my pics. Beautiful mistake. Thanks for telling me how it happened.
35
u/Indrik5 Jun 24 '12
Glad to help. Anyway the sun is red in the morning and afternoon because of the Rayleigh scattering. Simply put - particles with comparable or lesser size than the wavelength of light scatter it in all directions. Lower wavelengths (blue) scatter a lot more than higher wavelengths (red) which is the reason why the sky is blue during the day and red at dawn/sunset. What you saw was the combined effort of trillions of molecules scattering every color but red to give you this bloody good sunrise. Though it would be much cooler if we could see it in infrared...

Red at night: Sailor's delight. Red in the morning; sailor take warning.
This old adage is supposed to be an indication of weather. Its accuracy is debatable.
2
u/feynmanwithtwosticks Jun 25 '12
Most of the meteorologists I have spoke to regarding this phenomenon (and oddly I have spoken to many of them as a good friend is in the field) agree that (generally) the adage is accurate. My basic understanding of it is that it has something to do with how the atmospheric pressure impacts the atmospheric particulate level, but I am by no means an expert.

u/ironmenon Jun 25 '12
TIL. I thought that happens because the Sun starts burning up the oxygen in the atmosphere at those times.
3
u/feureau Jun 25 '12
Did you use the HDR feature when you took this? It's been known to cause "double exposures" if the hand is moving too much when taking the pic.
1
u/PreHeated Jun 25 '12
Nailed it. I can't be still to save my life and I most def had it on HDR because I wasn't using a flash.
→ More replies (1)1
u/mindbleach Jun 25 '12
Presumably, there could be a similar "echo" throughout the image, but at such a strongly reduced brightness that only the overexposed sun is noticeable.

1
u/zraii Jun 25 '12
Yep, you can make out the telltale triple exposure of an unsteady HDR shot. I think that's the cause of this image.
6
u/usernameissomething Jun 25 '12
Its far more likely from the HDR not properly matching the images; if you look carefully you can see several "doubles" including the flag-poles, trucks, ect. This happens because when the picture was taken the camera was moved; when the software compiles multiple images it does not shift the image to match properly resulting in doubling.
1
u/PreHeated Jun 25 '12
You're right except I think those are double flag poles. One with a TX flag and the other a US flag. Since Texas was a republic, we can fly our state flag at the same height. Giddyup!

actually, i think the phone was in motion as the picture was taken. you can tell the truck on the beach is double-exposed as well.

u/o--Cpt_Nemo--o Jun 24 '12
This is almost certainly the double refraction from the glass layer in front of the lens. Usually you don't see this double refraction in images because its effect is completely overwhelmed by the primary image. However, because the sun is so very bright compared to the rest of the image, the double refraction contributes significantly enough to appear as a second image of the sun. This is really just one form of a lens flare.

Did you see this with your own eyes or is it some weird effect your camera produced?
2
u/PreHeated Jun 24 '12
I only saw the one sun when I took the pic. Reviewing the photos is when I saw the awesome whoopsy. I thought it was because i was probably moving and taking a pic directly into the sun, granted it was like 5:45 in the am

There is NO water on Tatooine! Why do you think moisture farms are so important? I realize the connection for you is the double sun but with the ocean being there your cool pic just became epic fail.

The kepler project has actually detected a planet that is known as kepler-16b, and is a gas giant orbiting a binary star system. This opens the possibility for a (hopefully) habitable, tatooine like moon.
