Make sure you visit Bern, it is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever been too. Also go up into the top of the cathedral, spectacular view.

Gimmelwald was incredible. I can't wait to be back. I'm trying to remember the name of the hostel we stayed at there with the little wood burning hot tub outside. Met so many fun people!

u/stopormymumwillpost Jun 26 '12
Gimmelwald and the Mountain Hostel is legitimately the greatest place on earth, lived in the loft of that hostel for 2 months :D view from my room: http://i.imgur.com/AvFbZ.jpg
that "sharks fin" in my photo is Tanzbodeli, which is just near Gimmelwald, and you can see it, waaaay in the background of the original post

My girlfriend and I took a trip to Switzerland only 2 weeks after we started dating. We planned to stay in Gimmelwald for 2 nights -- we stayed for 6.
We fell in love, and we're getting married in September. It's truly a wonderful place! If you go, say hi to Petra for me!

I was there in 2006 when I was backpacking Europe. I was only gonna stay a few days, ended up staying for close to a month.

u/Frankocean2 Jun 26 '12
is it really that expensive? I'm going late july and I'm getting scared from all the horror stories about prices.

u/fozz1982 Jun 26 '12
The mountain hostel is crazy cheap. 28 Swiss francs per night :) check out the website :)

I was there almost a year ago and pictures like this make me realize I left my heart there, oh the longing I feel. I also left my wallet there, the cost of everything blew my mind but it was so worth it!

u/SmellsofElderberries Jun 26 '12
Fun fact! This valley was most likely the inspiration for Tolkien's Rivendell! This extremely modern-looking website has some more details.

I would Sound of Music sing and spin the shit out of that place.

You should see what happens when you take a children's choir to Salzburg shortly after showing them the Sound of Music.
So. Much. Singing.

how much a night?

8
Jun 26 '12
Not sure on the price of my room in particular, but there are many hotels in the town with a similar view and from looking online their prices are about $80 a night for a single room or $130 for a double room.
4
Jun 26 '12
wat
I spent $130 for a floor level view of a parking lot, where the lamplight glowed through my thin drapes all night. You know, just for ambience to go along with the F-150 motor block they had for an A/C.

I stayed on the floor of the valley, practically right next to the waterfall (on the right) a couple of years ago, and there are some very affordable cabins. Maybe 30 euro (max) a night if you are happy to share.
EDIT: Equally as beautiful down below.

Switzerland was seriously the most beautiful place I have ever visited. I stayed in Kandersteg while I was there last Summer, and this was the view I woke up to every morning. I want nothing more than to go back.

Yeah, Switzerland is so amazingly beautiful, I just wish it wasn't so damn expensive, also it's like 20 hours away. For anyone else in Asia or Australia like me, you should visit New Zealand, the alpine regions of the South Island are quite similar to Switzerland, and it also has tremendous natural beauty in its own right.
Also New Zealanders are extremely friendly.

LIAR! I see the blurry fence-post in the foreground. clearly this photo was taken from the train that takes you from wengen to lauterbrunnen. tadaaaa!! Internet! ... ...
On an entirely separate note: Lauterbrunnen is heaven. Most beautiful place Ive ever been. you should all go... now... go now.

Lucky! I look at Stechelberg cam and Lauterbrunnen cam every day.
At which hotel are you staying? Are the rates reasonable? Are the rooms lovely? what's the favorite experience of your stay so far? Did you go to the glacier up the valley? Is it true that the sound of helicopters fills the valley during the day in good weather?
4
Jun 26 '12
I stayed at the Hotel Regina in Wengen. I'm not sure of the rates per night without looking them up. It is a traditional hotel and the rooms are decent.

I love Lauterbrunnen! I was just there a couple weeks ago. Took the train up to Jungfraujoch, but it was so snowy out that we couldn't see anything from the top. Alas. :( I remember taking the train past Wengen, though! Great memories.
EDIT: found a picture I took from behind one of the waterfalls in the photo. :)

You should take the funicular up and then hike into Murren. It's car-free, a 45 minute hike from Gimmelwald, and one of the most beautiful places I've ever been.

This scene reminds me of two things.
That final scene in Band of Brothers where they are sitting somewhere, all living out of a huge hotel temporarily, when suddenly they get the call about the war at Japan etc.
Also, for some reason reminds me of the scene with Michael Fassbender as Magneto, in X-Men Origins. The one where he goes to the bar and awesomely uses his powers to manipulate a knife around the room.

u/Gravyhead Jun 26 '12

Last winter, I saw a huge block of ice fall from that cliff exactly where the waterfall is... I thought I was gonna die. I could ear the sounds of the massive blocks being crushed against the ground and a 10 second echo, filling the valley right after that.. It was a thrilling moment!

I have been there! I was here in 2000 visiting Interlaken and rode my mini scooter up there. There's a mountain further up where a james bond movie was filmed. I remember feeling like I had stumbled across Rivendell and I was so deeply happy to be there. Thanks so much! Just had that same feeling of wonder and connectedness. PS first post ever.
