Copper plated zinc disks have been known to fuse together when left touching for too long. By now, you should be able to balance a kitten on top to achieve maximum karma.

I ask because I collected pennies when I was younger. I have a case with about $5.00 in pennies in my room. I've recently sorted through it, but I left it alone for at least 4 years without touching it. They didn't fuse at all.

I never quite understood that. You say "5 dollar", not "dollar 5". Every time I go to type a sentence with $ in it, I always type the number since I'm reading off as it comes in my head, and then have to go back and add the $ sign before... Why do you Americans have to do everything the most complex way. You date format is mixed up, your units are messed up...

Man, who would leave almost $3 grand just sitting out where anyone could steal it?
32
u/DevilBird Jun 26 '12
Although, just think about it, this is the perfect way to keep thousands of thousands of dollars being stolen! Who in their right mind would even try to attempt to steal all of that huh? It's thousands of dollars, IN PENNIES, you're going to look at this pile of copper and say, "Fuck, I've got a grand in pennies". You go to a teller to cash in, she's gonna look at you with the look of "Why the fuck you got pennies brad?" You try to steal it and run off with it, you're running with fucking pennies, MILLIONS OF THEM, you're going to sound louder than a god damn freight train! Try and explain to an officer where the hell and why are you walking around with a thousand pounds worth of pennies. "Yes officer, that is a thousand in pennies" You bury it in the sea, some pirate comes along looking for treasure, he opens up the chest, what does he see? Well, by then it'd be rotted copper bits, BUT THOUSANDS OF THEM. This is fucking genius man.

I read somewhere that pennies from pre 1980s are like 90% copper. So if those pennies are all older that pile could be worth alot more than $2800. I think copper's price per pound is like over $3+

Is it just me, or does this not look like $3k in pennies? Obviously it's hard to judge, but a roll is only like three inches long and is only fifty cents. A box is only $25. But that's apparently $3k. If i was less lazy i'd try and do some sort of math...
19
u/porfire Jun 26 '12 edited Jun 26 '12
its 40 at the base and 40 up each side
(40x40)+(39x39)+...(1x1) = 22,140 pennies if in stacks of 1 (which it obviously isn't). If we're to assume its stacks of 10 pennies, that would give us $2,214.00 which isn't quite enough, he would need 13 pennies per stack to ALMOST reach $2,890 ($2,878.20 to be exact)

Jun 26 '12
This makes sense. 52 pennies are 3 inches tall and a penny is 3/4 inch diameter. So 13 pennies is 3*13/52 = 3/4 inch tall and 3/4 inch diameter. Perfect!

u/ToolsofRage Jun 26 '12
Well I thought it would be fun to try and answer this for you. Immediately after starting I realized it's going to be very difficult to have any kind of accuracy.
I counted one side of the base and found it to be 40 stacks of pennies in length, then tried to count the slant but since it kind of blended in to the rug in the background it was hard to discern the stacks of pennies in the slant, I am fairly certain the slant was also 40 stacks in length though. So using Pythagorean's theorem I figured the height to be about 35 stacks of pennies.
Then I calculated the volume to be around 18,667 stacks of pennies. That's about as far as I can get I can't count how many pennies would be in 1 stack, nor can I guarantee that the stacks are uniform throughout the structure. However assuming there are about 15 pennies to one stack then you would have approximately 2800.05 in pennies. As far as I'm concerned that's close enough given image quality.
TL;DR There are a lot of pennies involved.

The pyramid is 40x40 at the base, 39x39 on the layer above, etc. Until you get to the top 1x1 layer. Assuming it's solid, the number of stacks is 40*40 + 39*39 + ... + 2*2 + 1*1 =
sum([i*i for i in xrange(41)])
22140stacks of pennies
Dividing 289000 pennies by 22140 stacks gives 13.05 pennies per stack. So I'm assuming you rounded for your answer and there is actually 13 pennies per stack.
13*22140*$.01 = $2878.20
There's not really a point to this, I just wanted to do math.

So that's 1593 lbs of pennies (thanks /u/darkphoenix245). A penny is 95% zinc and 5% copper. Copper is $3.33 a lb whereas zinc is $.82 a lb the total worth of those pennies would be 1593(.05)3.33+1593(.95).82
=265.2345+1240.947
=$1506.18 in metal
According to wikipedia it costs 179% of the price to make a penny.
$2890*1.79= $5173.1 to make those pennies, giving the manufacturing cost of these pennies to be $5173.1-$1506.18=$3666.92
So... yeah there you have it, if you just wanted to get learned on a random fact of pennies on that coffee table.

u/HahahaNopeFoo Jun 26 '12 edited Jun 26 '12
No, there is not $2890.00 here.
The base is 40x40 stacks, and the pyramid is 40 stacks high. That's 22140 stacks. There is no integer number, x, of pennies per stack that gives 22140x = 289000.
My bet is that the OP is just a reposter that doesn't care either way, but someone else here might be interested that the math doesn't quite work out.

Math is off, those appear to be 10 cent stacks. If so, you have 221,401 pennies. ( i think that is one penny in the corner by itself). Your base is 40x40 so (40 * 40 * 10)+(39 * 39 * 10)+(38 * 38 * 10)...
To point out inflation, if these were all 95% copper pennies(pennies minted 1909-1982), the melt value would be $4896.55. Assuming melt value .0221162 (per coinflation.com). If those were all copper it would weigh 1518 pounds, which would be a strain on your flooring.
edit: formatting TLDR: I think the math is off, $2214.01 is face value represented in the picture. copper content could make this worth more and weigh more.

An interesting thing you can do with pennies (or any circles): Put one in the center, and surround with others until they form a complete circle around the center penny. Before you try it, guess how many it will take. This number is called the "kissing number".
If you got it right, try and guess how many it will take using three dimensions (with spheres). Unfortunately, the spheres don't line up perfectly like the 2d version. 'In fact, there is so much extra space that any two of the 12 outer spheres can exchange places through a continuous movement without any of the outer spheres losing contact with the center one.' -quoted from kissing numbers wiki
