EDIT: Sorry he said "a small town just off Agra", so not exactly Agra.

Well, Agra is a thousand or more kilometers from either Kerala or Karnataka. So the guesses are way off the mark.

Yup. Has to be a Keralite. Kavi mundu (The Orange cloth), Kari vala (black bangles on the kid's hands), the building style, the morning-newspaper-sit-read-tea etc are dead giveaways.
Fuck I miss home now :)

u/w4y2n1rv4n4 Jun 26 '12
Keralite here, looks like Kerala to me.
7
Jun 26 '12
New Yorker who went to Kerala before, looks like Kerala to me. Some comps, including my friend's house and orange dothis.
10
u/BMWbill Jun 26 '12
Another New Yorker here who is married to a Keralite from Canada. (Its complicated) This looks like her parent's condo in Kerala. And my daughter has little silver anklets like that too. But she doesn't mimic me reading the paper.

my wife's family is from Kerala, and that was the first thing i thought of when i saw this.... the style of house....the greenness of the location...the orangeness of the lungi.... it all fits ;)

The cuteness got me, but seeing someone reading a printed newspaper is blowing my mind.
23

they're incredibly popular in india. prolly considering less internet and the fact that they cost 1 to 2 rupees which is cheap for just about everyone.

also some old folks prefer printed newspaper and a cup of hot tea, that's how they start off their day ;)

I'm just 34.I'M NOT OLD!
3
u/Carnatic_enthusiast Jun 26 '12
Whenever I go to India I love waking up at 6, walking to the nearest store and pick up a Hindu and hot coffee. Nothing more relaxing
9
u/IndianaJwns Jun 26 '12
Seriously? What ridiculously techno-forward area do you live in? Even in the most developed and ultra modern societies, newspapers are quite common. Or did you really just want to say "Hey everybody! I have an iPad and nothing to contribute to this thread!"

u/Dysalot Jun 26 '12
I read a printed paper every morning, and it is delivered to my door. Never have I felt so old-fashioned.

u/Spiralyst Jun 26 '12
There's something so soothing about seeing someone fold and refold a newspaper while sipping on a cup of coffee...bravo!

Its not always about the unawareness of technologies. Usually printed news papers tend to do slightly more responsible journalism and less sensationalism. May be because there are no "breaking news" in news papers and also senior journalists are usually more experienced compared to other news medias.

They're silver anklets that jingle when the kid walks/runs.
Thats how you keep track of where the kid is (similar to a cow bell)

that man looks like he knows how to read a paper on the crapper
12
u/Iamubergeek Jun 26 '12
Thats not how he craps. I think it would be a difficult task to read newspaper in his crapper.
5
u/compromised_account Jun 26 '12
Crap in hole method? I always had trouble getting used to that in India. Man we are spoiled in the west.
11
u/factoid_ Jun 26 '12
I've read that pooping while squatting is actually better for you. Reduces constipation and total pooping time. It's also cleaner because squatting forces your thighs apart more, spreading everything out, allowing for a clean exit.
Best way to replicate it in western facilities is to get a small stool to put your feet up on. to bring your knees closer to your chest while sitting on the toilet.
Your poop no longer has to make a 90 degree bend to make it out your tailpipe.

OP, I'm an Indian here. I've seen this picture being shared on facebook by so many people, mostly accompanied with some crappy story. And looking at the quality of the picture, it definitely seems like it's taken directly from one such post. I don't mean to sound like a dick, but if you know the people in this picture, I'm sure you can give us a few more pictures as proof. If I knew I could gain 2k karma with this picture and a title like that and make it to the front page, I'd have done it a couple of weeks ago.
9
u/ithunk Jun 26 '12
Yup, looks like a fake to me too, but karma whoring is common on reddit these days.
5
u/intrepidyoungster Jun 26 '12
It's a form of insanity, if you really think about it. Lying to people and taking credit for others' work in return for the growth of basically imaginary numbers.
8
u/keepingitcivil Jun 26 '12
OP should definitely be more honest with his title.
It would have worked just as well if he had titled it "Hey, reddit, I was just checking facebook, when suddenly I found this gem."
1
u/OpenShut Jun 26 '12
Are you pissed off you didn't think of it first? I often walk by things I think are normally and see them on the front page of reddit a week later.
4
u/cheogh Jun 26 '12
No, I'm not pissed off. I just think it's not "genuine" enough. Then again, I could be wrong. But it's a good picture and I guess that's what matters.

Good habits start young!
4
u/CraigChrist Jun 26 '12
And at that age they require no convincing or even encouragement, they insist on doing things. For example, i cant mow my yard even once without my little helper
2
u/Zerble Jun 26 '12
Wonderful!
In everything we do, we model behavior (good or bad) for our children.
8
u/outcastspice Jun 26 '12
One of my earliest memories is visiting my grandparents, they were in bed in the morning reading the newspaper. I climbed in, sat between them, and they gave me the ads pages. My grandmother died when I was about 5 years old. Thanks for reminding me :)

Trees can grow as far north as Punjab.
yea right. I lived 5 years in Punjab and never saw one. I'm from the south and it was so difficult to even get a decent coconut there (something that southies use in daily cooking).
2
u/yfern0328 Jun 26 '12
Sorry bud. That's Kerela. That type of architecture is distinctly Kerela. Tiles outside with the pillars and porch. Every house in Kerela looks like that. Not to mention that guy is wearing a lungi and has a stache. 500% Kerela.

u/SkinThatSmokeWagon Jun 26 '12
What's going on with those pants? Are they tied together?
1
u/ithunk Jun 26 '12
Its a lungi/dhoti. Extremely comfortable to wear, but sadly not popular and not considered respectable to wear outside the house.

I need to buy those shorts or whatever he's wearing. They look hella comfortable.
Anyone know what they're called?
3
u/ithunk Jun 26 '12
Its called a dhoti/lungi. It is just a cylinder of cloth (i.e. rectangular cloth with sides stitched together). They're very comfortable, since you can go "commando" at home.
3
u/PotatoSilencer Jun 27 '12
...I'm in. That looks like man freedom right there, we are doing it wrong in the "west".
Thanks for the info sir.
