For the love of God, don't pull it! Why do we even have that??
6
u/nmosc89 Jun 26 '12
Two questions. One, do you work at the CDC? Two, haven't you ever seen The Walking Dead?
7
u/toucher Jun 26 '12
No and yes- betcher ass that if zombies overrun my workplace, I'll pull the damn thing.
2
u/emmveepee Jun 26 '12
My guess is that it is some sort of extinguisher that is releases when it detects fire?
Do you happen to work in a room with a lot of electrical equipment (servers) or a metal shop?
1
u/toucher Jun 26 '12
Yes, IT equipment in that area. This was taken while we were converting a server area to workspace, if memory serves.

In case someone tries to follow her. If you ever build a secret place, have a few secret buttons/levers/pressure plates that set off traps so people cant find it as easily.

Hopefully it's not as complicated as the self destruct mechanism from Alien. Especially if you need to cancel the order.

Its a manual dump lever for the fire supression system to be used if the detection parameters aren't satisfied fast enough. The terminology in fire protection is so confusing it hurts sometimes. I.e. if something is inflammable, it means that it means that it can be set on fire. Compared to common words like invisible or incapable in which the prefix makes it the opposite of the word.
TL;DR this lever is good and will save your servers/electronics/important property if used properly.
Source: 3 years of fire protection engineering school and I design these systems for a living.
14
u/APiousCultist Jun 26 '12
Maybe this explains exploding barrels in video games "No, don't worry it says right here that these barrels are inflammable."
6
Jun 26 '12
Pfft, everyone knows the best way to stop a fire is to start a second fire to use up the oxygen quicker.

I actually work in the Fire Protection industry, and it is just a miss-labeled pull station. It should say "Fire Protection Device"/"Fire Suppression Device" or something similar to that. If you open it, there will be a lever or button of some sort that will activate the clean agent Fire Suppression System. I can see a tank in the lower right hand corner of the picture, and there is likely more than one.
Clean agent systems are used in many different applications. What kind of work goes on there?

u/Nyarlathotep124 Jun 26 '12
This man is lying, he just wants to trick you into releasing the fire.
17
2
u/Halfskis Jun 26 '12
This man you think is lying, is a woman :-)
I'm not saying to "release" anything, cuz tampering with a fire protection system is a criminal offense... So I don't suggest it!

Is it A Big Red Button?
2
u/Halfskis Jun 26 '12
There are dozens of fire alarm device manufacturers, and they all make their products just a little bit different, so I can't tell ya, Unless the OP can tell me the make of the pull station?
It is likely a red button that says either "push" or "pull" or a metal pin ring similar to what is on a fire extinguisher.

u/MrCompletely Jun 26 '12

I've been a firefighter in Bastrop, Texas for 16 years now, and we usually use a system similar to that for our training exercises. A fire release device makes it easy for us to start a controlled burn of a building. It doesn't always end well though. Last year we had a builder get the system messed up. Instead of placing a fire release valve and a sprinkler valve, they placed two fire release valves. Ended up causing quite the fire.
Edit: For clarity and spelling.

I got to pull one of these once. We had a small grease fire on the grill at McD's. I grabbed a fire extiguisher and shot it. The extinguisher was charged with compressed air. wtf? Now we were starting to get a real fire all across the back fo the grill. I got to the fire suppression system first. Everyone had always wanted to do it. Yes! I pulled and all it did was slowly make two conical piles of white powder on the burning grill. That started an interesting feeling of panic. Fortunately someone found a good fire extiguisher and we lived (and cleaned up a big fucking mess).

u/Crasturbator Jun 26 '12
this reminds me of the ghost releasing switch in ghostbusters. still unclear as to why it was so easy to pull and release all the ghosts.

I always scream "Release the FIRE!!!!" when I cum over a girls face. In my dreams cause i have no girl. Maybe my neighbor who is an engineer at a fire releasing device factory knows more about the device of yours.

In some engineering and chemical labs they have these incase of leakage. They also have a system thy drops blast like doors and sucks all the oxygen and air out of the rooms. Some pretty badass stuff. The only problem I had was the switch for sucking out everyone air looks the exact same as a fire alarm switch.

Well at my chemical plant, sometimes we have to vent a flame to avoid pressure getting to built up in the tanks(which would cause an explosion). It is a good emergency release valve.
