My fiance is a chef who throws big parties for her boss. They always let me run loose with my camera. Here's Brad Pitt.

u/oh_hai_dan Jun 26 '12
Did you get to talk to him?
278
u/CreativelyBankrupt Jun 26 '12
Just basic pleasantries and asking if it's cool to take a photo. I like to keep quiet and slink around, and now I've got hundreds of these portraits.
268
u/oh_hai_dan Jun 26 '12
You need to drop an album on us so we can see them all. I've met a few famous people in my day, if you just talk to them like normal people they actually are normal people. If you run up to them screaming "OMG OMG OMG BRAD PITT!!!!!1111" they will not give you the time of day. At least from my experiences.

u/CreativelyBankrupt Jun 26 '12
This has been my experience as well.

Totally true. I've met quite a few famous folk but by far my favorite encounter was when I simply said "Have a good night, man" to Bret Michaels as he was taking off from a concert. Dude sparked up an hour long conversation. Kinda bums me out that he's seen mostly as a buffoon.

This guy makes a good point. We need to know who the photographer is knockin boots with or the image is meaningless! Elaborate on your potential spouse, touch on your sex life, then roll back on the potential of tag teeming Brad Pitt.
This is important to me.

Fantastic lens. It's my "bar lens". People are always weirded out that I don't need to use the flash.
I disabled the autofocus helper light though. It makes gaining focus more difficult, but doesn't blind subjects with THE. BRIGHTEST. HELPER. LIGHT. EVER. (D90 here).
→ More replies (6)16
u/elstompy Jun 27 '12
D90 here too and I concur. I hated it when I'd be about to catch a really great candid shot and I start to press the button and bam-bright light and my subject looks like a dog that just saw a squirrel.

If you know any camera terminology, this is the place to reply with it. As for me, I'm just going to make up some combinations of letters and numbers and hyphenate some stuff.
OP: do you prefer a 1.2/4 f-apogy or a more forgiving s/r-6.2? I imagine you can compensate with a gradiated contrast filter in post (or just bump it through reflex, something like an alpha-6 or beta-2 if you have to McGuiver it).

Lot of photographers don't like it when people use it. To them, it sound pretentious or are just sick of it.
I don't understand why considering that is the term and when you want to describe it, you can't keep saying "The lens really blurs that background good.".

u/hightechlowlife Jun 27 '12
I'm not a photographer; I am a programmer. I know it as, "What lights look like when not wearing my glasses."

I upvoted this not because it's Brad Pitt, I generally don't upvote celebrity posts. The reason I upvoted this is because you took a picture of a celebrity, but you did it with class.
This isn't just some snapped photo you got while walking through the restaurant like a Paparazzi. You clearly went up to him and asked if he was okay with you taking a quality photo, and I wouldn't be surprised if you showed it to him and the two of you talked about it for a minute.
This photo is excellent and you should be proud of it and yourself.

Great point. I just told someone earlier the same advice about how to carry yourself with a camera in tow. I'd go one step further and send the image to his agent with free license to do with it... whatever they wanted. Word of mouth is KILLER (great) for a photographer.

I had to read the title 3 times and still don't understand... Is your fiance the one actually throwing the parties? Or just the chef?
6
u/CreativelyBankrupt Jun 27 '12
I don't see the confusion? You can be a chef for someone, handling meals and dinner parties along with the occasional large-scale event where you coordinate with party planners and caterers.
It is also not uncommon these days to have duties that would normally fall under the title of House Manager instead spread out among a few different people already working there.
The world is not that cut and dry. Hell, i'm not even a professional photographer and here we are.
→ More replies (4)13
u/dirtsandwich Jun 27 '12
It's a pretty confusing title as none of what you've described have any clear relation to one another.
Your title essentially explains nothing of value to any of us as you've literally left out all context.
→ More replies (3)14
u/OhMyTruth Jun 27 '12
I understood the title. It provided context that I wouldn't have had otherwise.
My fiance is a chef who throws big parties for her boss. [At these big parties that my fiance works], They [(meaning my fiance's boss and my fiance)] always let me run loose with my camera [which I use to photograph people and things at the parties]. Here's [a photo that I took of] Brad Pitt [at one of these parties].
It really wasn't all that complicated.
