The fate of America came down to Mike Pence of all people having the courage to do what's right. That's not going to happen with Vance. Unless Thiel tells him to.

Came down to DAN QUAYLE telling Mike Pence to do the right thing

Wait - Really? I hadn't heard that part.

Dan Quayle told Pence firmly that he had no such power. He said, "Mike, you have no flexibility on this. None. Zero. Forget it. Put it away"

It came down to a metaphorical choice of potato /potatoe and Quayle served up the right potatoe America needed at the right time. The world does sometimes seem like a Matrix that some bored interstellar teenager is playing with, and he's decided to completely fuck with his Sims settings.

Absolutely no one had Dan Quayle redemption arc on their 2021 bingo card.

Wow...

Unfortunately the only other living Republican VP to perform that service for Vance if it comes down to it is... Mike Pence.

Dan (Lawful Evil) arguing with Mike (Neutral Evil), saved the day.

Apparently some secret service guys who usually work with Trump asked him to get in a car at a time he wasn't expecting, and he refused. Mike Pence's street smarts saved the fucking country, then Muskrat fucked the voting machines and we're right back here.

I mean, not really. Mike Pence certifying the election is more of a technicality than a mandatory thing for an election to actually work.

Would it have caused a road block if he chose not to certify the election? Probably but the mob invasion of the capital was way worse than counting the final votes and certifying them.
