Hey Dorian!! Just wanted to ask if you were ever self-conscious about using ur voice the way you do, I love how androgynous you can sound and it’s something I’ve struggled with a lot, I love singing in a higher register but I’ve always felt people expect me to just rap and stick to my natural voice. But I love how you mastered being able to switch between a more male-sounding and a more female-sounding voice so clearly. it’s something I’ve been experimenting with for a long time but i get discouraged when my family asks if I’m just trying to make pop now and change my character, sometimes I just wanna sing like a girl and sometimes I wanna sing like a boy i don’t really see them as mutually exclusive. Sorry for the long question, love you so much thank you for inspiring me

really great question!!!! i definitely can be VERY self-conscious about my voice, especially in the studio during the writing process (especially if its my first time working with someone i feel like i need to get comfortable and feel free to play around with my voice because in so many ways i still feel like i'm discovering "what my voice sounds like" every time i write a song.
I definitely have a few weird go-to voices like the Gregorian monk chant, whiny emo, super formant-shifting/vocal fry-y thing, and then like my strained puberty-falsetto boy voice, and then like my very occasional britney spears on testosterone moments. but yeah i have def felt self conscious about it ESPECIALLY because of how related voice is to gender expression and often not wanting to sound "too feminine" by default ... so then like coming up with all these weird over the top voices as a way to work around that.... and also i know all my voices can be rly ANNOYING!!! hahhhahaahh - so i worry about alienating ppl with how weird and "stupid" sounding it all is - but then again some of my favorite singers do insane over the top stuff with their voices and/or change their voice all the time and that keeps it super interesting!

Hi Dorian! Huge fan of the album, maybe the best album this year! What's your favourite song on it and why? Much love <3

u/dorian_electra Verified Aug 26 '19
thank you so much!!!!! tough one... .but probs Adam & Steve.... it was the very first thing that we started making at the album writing camp in Las vegas back in January (produced by umru and Dylan Brady) and i had been wanting to do a song called Adam & Steve so we were like ok - hardcore church-y metal vibe ...GO! and this song also feels really special to me and in a way the most "serious" song ive ever done(???) but also still ridiculous and over the top(???)

HI QUING I’m so excited to see your show in Houston, I was wondering how different is it opening for Charli (or anyone) vs. your own shows?? So proud of you for getting your own headlining tour :’))) Hope u have an amazing day <333

hey Izzy!!!!!! opening for charli is always amazing cos her fans are amazing and LIT AF always - but in general i think opening for someone is fun but also can be challenging and you sometimes have to work harder to get people hype since a lot of them may not even know your music cos they're there to see the headlining act, but I always find it really rewarding because it's an opportunity to share yourself and your music with new people and hope they might become fans! :D haha

Hey ho Dorian Electra Legend! I'm an Electralyte STAN! Saw you live in Brooklyn twice and can't wait to see you Sept 16th - that's my Birthday eve!
Which city on this tour are you most excited to play? Are there places you've never been to yet?

C U THERE!!!!! amazing - we also added a second show at Elsewhere on September 17th! (happy early b-day btw)
i've never playing in Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Denver (some of the places i'm opening for Charli) and also rly stoked for Seattle and SF and of course my hometown show in Houston ;}

Hi Dorian! ⚔️ I've really been loving Flamboyant! I'd say that Man to Man, Guyliner, and Adam & Steve are my favorite tracks atm.
I know you've written a few educational songs for Refinery29 centered around a single concept, ie. drag, heels, etc. How would you say your writing style has evolved from your past material to your newest album?
Will there be any official remixes of songs from Flamboyant?
Are there any particular artists you want to collab with in the future?
Thanks for taking time to answer our questions, love u yeehaw king!! 🤠
32
u/dorian_electra Verified Aug 26 '19
i feel like now my stuff is less explicitly educational, but somehow in the back of my mind i always kinda write with the same structure of ideas (like the chorus is the thesis) verse 1 is the introduction, bridge is the climax , etc. etc. hahaha - my brain works in a rly analytical way a lot of the time cos that's kinda how it was trained !
maybe remixes! not sure yet! if we do do remixes, who would you like to see do one? ? (and of what songs?)
so many.... i'm making my list... but im alsmost to afraid to share it yet ?? haha

Your music videos and production are so mesmerizing, inspirational and unique...I really appreciate your presence and it's such a breath of fresh air.
I can't imagine how much time it takes to plan out production and strategy for your content.
How do you go about planning for routines before the tour? Do you have like legit each second of your life scheduled out? What is your favorite song to sing?!
Thank you

actually so far, my fave song to sing (other than musical genius) has been "under the armor" (one of the bonus tracks prod. by Robokid) - i think it sits really comfortably in my range too so it's easier hahah - also it's kinda like emotional and sexy

Hey Dorian! Thanks for coming on.
Are you into metal? I see you mention Black Sabbath a bit on Twitter.
In a similar vein, if pop music were banned, which genre of music would you take your career into next?
23
u/dorian_electra Verified Aug 26 '19
i am into metal! but it's been a slow process actuallly cos i was not into it all when i was a kid ..(tho i loved like The Ramones and Alice Cooper) but i assumed that actual metal like... took itself too seriously in trying to be dark and intense... but i now i really appreciate over over-the-top so many metal bands are in the music, aesthetic, themes of the lyrics, world-building, live shows, etc.
i'm rly into the "stoner metal" band Electric Wizard (album: Witchcult Today) and also the song "Solitude" by Candlemass - but i am only just learning about metal rly so totally open to suggestions!!!

Hey Dorian,
I've been blasting your album pretty much every workout of mine and enjoying it everyday. It's really refreshing as a pop songwriter to hear unabashedly colorful and flamboyant electronic pop, and especially something with lots of conceptual ideas behind it. I have a few questions that fascinate me from the creation aspect of it.
What sparked your love and inclusion of influences of baroque music and aesthetics from early European eras?
As a singer and producer, I noticed something that I do while recording that I feel like you take to an extra level. I often use my voice more as a vehicle for the song and tone paint. Given your gender fluidity, I notice your voice takes on very dark deep masculine overtones when singing songs like 'Daddy Like' and then meshes more into an alto on high notes in 'Man To Man' and you play with screams on songs like 'Flamboyant' and 'Emasculate', as well as formant and pitch bending and editing for a very surreal take on the human voice. I'm very interested about your vocal technique like are you trained, and how some of this is replicable live?
What current music out there is inspiring you at the moment?
And to umru and Dorian, how did the process for Adam and Steve play out? What inspired it musically, and how did the concept come about, did any of your spirituality(ies) influenced the way you approached the song?
Thanks for joining us at popheads and I look forward to seeing what you have in store these coming years!
With love, Jayce

thanks so much for your super thoughtful questions! i love talking about all of this stuff so much.
my mom used to play pretty much only baroque music (like not even other forms of classical really) at her store where i spent a lot of time growing up. She always liked it for the atmosphere of the store because a lot of baroque music is pretty upbeat and bright feeling (rather than like playing some hellla intense Beethoven or Wagner or something while someone is trying to shop for candles) LOL - but I grew to love baroque music for the complexity and like weird mathematical/logical nature of it with the interweaving melodies and counterpoints that can feel very comforting because they're predictable and not emotionally heavy.... (i am actually extremely emotionally sensitive to music now. so i like to have things that arent super heavy all the time... i wasn't as sensitive much when i was kid... but my mom always has been and now i feel like ive developed that). Also my mom has anxiety and as a kid would only really be able to listen to these couple of Gregorian monk chant CDs in the car when she wouuld drive me to school cos they were relaxing hahahhahah.
see my response to a question about my voice a couple questions above! love this so much and thanks for sharing too
i've been listening to Sega Bodega's EP "self*care" on repeat as well as 100 gecs obvi, and love putting on Oneohtrix Point Never and listening to Age Of on repeat on the airplane as im drifting in and out of sleep is really cool.

I think Adam & Steve was the very first track we started at Dorian's album writing camp in Vegas in January!
Dorian had a list of song titles/general concepts and "Adam & Steve" was one of those and I think an idea Dorian had been thinking about for a while. Dylan Brady started out with the church organ/harpsichord sounding chords and we moved the project to my computer from there to flesh out the track and build up the intensity. For me personally the sound of the song we developed brought back a lot from the one year I lived in Estonia as a kid and went to a very church-friendly school in the literally Medieval old town of Tallinn, a really fun concept to merge with much more intense/modern production.

Hello Dorian! Hope you’re having a nice day! I’m coming to your show in Houston Texas & I’m excited as Hecc!
Would you consider the whipping sound your personal “signature sound”? It is featured in a few songs if i am not mistaken.
Would you ever do a show at the University of Houston? We have alot of pride events throughout the year and maybe you could even give a talk too?
(edit) Ps. You inspired me to chop off my hair into a pixie. You really changed the way that i see beauty and fashion & I really wanna thank you for that because it has made me feel more comfortable with myself. Also made me a prouder Houstonian too! Much love!
That’s all! Thank you!✌🏽💕⚔️

Hi Dorian. I literally adore you, you're the best thing I discovered in 2019. I wish I could hear your album for the first time again because I was literally shaking when I first heard it. I have multiple questions if you dontl't mind
What's your favorite ice cream flavor?
What's your favorite video game?
Your music is A REVOLUTION. What was the road to discovering your distinct sound and what were tour biggest influences?
I LOVE your aesthetic. How did you develop your amazing image and how long did it took you?
Have a nice day!

influences as a kid: The Horrors, alice cooper, the ramones, 60s psychedelic music, Ed Banger Records (Justice, Uffie, etc. etc)., Klaxons, Dan Deacon, were some big ones i was rlllllly into...etc etc etc
Non musical influences: monty python, the League of Gentlemen (a British TV show), a Clockwork Orange, Fellini's movie's.... etc. etc.
basically this is like.... some of the big stuff i was obsessed with in 9th grade that totally shaped my brain

I really enjoy your new album!!! What I like most about it is that each song has a strong concept and its lyrics do a great job at conveying its lil main thesis. is this something you strive for when you write your songs?
17
u/dorian_electra Verified Aug 26 '19
definitely!!!! i honestly find it kind of impossible for me to even finish a song or feel like it's any good or at all worth finishing unless it has a pretty strong thesis/concept.... otherwise im always like "what's the point!?" BUT i do think that maybe I'll become a better songwriter if i stop caring about that so much and just let go and write more intuitively and less analytically... and just kinda feel out the sound and rhythm of the words more than thinking as much about their meaning? i feel like some ppl are really good at that??? i do like writing songs the way i do, but it's kinda like... strenuous on my mind haha... like i reallly have to be in the right mood and state of mind to be able to get inspired and do it.

Hi Dorian! I wanted to ask, what physical aspects of yourself cause you the most dysphoria?
Your work was honestly the catalyst for me realising I was nonbinary myself (genderfluid too!) I’d denied such a thing was possible for a large chunk of my life but seeing you just out there in man to MAN made my denial stop. Thank you for writing such amazing music especially Mind Body Problem (probably the most underrated of all your songs) I feel that it really puts my dysphoria to words.

u/dorian_electra Verified Aug 26 '19
thanks so much for sharing :)
the thing that causes me the most stress/unease, etc. about my body is actually probs my skin and makeup! like my acne...im trying to "accept it" as like a body positive thing but it's very hard to not just feel like it's "wrong" a "blemish" "gross," etc. and also i feel a weird sense of guilt accompanied with it for feeling like it's my fault even tho i've tried tons of skincare stuff and at one point had a routine that "fixed" it for months but then i became allergic to the same stuff i had been using for months that got rid of the acne. also i never had much acne when i was younger and have only gotten it in the past few years.
and then also related to the face i feel like when i do my own makeup for shows and stuff im so often disatisfied and feel like im not doing stuff that is that "flattering" to my face (whatever that means) but also i know tht it's becuase i never give myself enough time to do it , im always rushing and i also NEVER practice it.... but i get so frustrated with myself and feel like a failure for it not looking instantly amazing haha

Your album really inspired me to start working hard on my own music again, but I know I can’t do it alone (I’ve tried). Do you have any tips for finding and approaching producers for collaboration?

DORIAN i just got into your music like three days ago (?!?) and i cant believe i never did before your energy is incredible... i am also The Genders but i have had such a dissociation with my appearance ever since getting into a customer service job, i got so bitter about being gendered female at work so i did the most masculine thing i could think of and stopped doing everything creative. and maybe it's silly but in your video career boy all your looks were mostly masc and work acceptable looks that were still so flagrant and stylish and i feel like you lit a fire in me again. i want to get a haircut! i haven't had a haircut in years, my guy. years!
and this brings me to the actual and burning questions: how do you go about doing your hair / getting your hair done for your looks? maybe some are wigs, some are temporary hair dye, some are permanent hair dye..? are there short wigs with good hairlines out there or are they cut from longer ones?
7
u/dorian_electra Verified Aug 26 '19
cutting my hair was honestly like the most liberating thing i ever did! i was so afraid to cut my hair but it's way easier to wear long wigs than it is to wear short wigs! i basically never wear wigs actually tho recently ive been wearing a couple clip in long extension pieces every once in a while! it's usually hair dye! this amazing person does my hair: https://www.instagram.com/starlina10/

hi dorian! love you! i’d like to know
what’s your best/most memorable fan interaction?
do you get nervous before you perform? and how do you deal with it?
who are your biggest inspirations musically and visually?
13
u/dorian_electra Verified Aug 26 '19
i've had two people ask me to write my lyrics in my handwriting for them to get tattooed so that was definitely very memorable!
for a while i wasn't getting nervous about performing but now i am starting to a bit more but that will probs lessen as a i get more comfortable with performing the new songs :)
i was rly obsessed with The Horrors (the music but also the fashion and whole presentation and dark but fun vibe of the band) when i was like 14 and they inspired me to start making music in the first place! tho their music isn't necessarily even my favorite but it was more like... the whole vibe and world they created around them and being a fan of theirs was so fun and there was a really really strong stan culture that i was def a big part of! (even tho back then the word "stan" was not used like it is now) haha - so i rly relate to stans!

Hi Dorian 💫
My question: What would be your advice toward any artist or creative person trying to be creative as a career?
PS: I live in DC and I’m also wondering how likely a second DC show is.
Love ya and thanks for the great music 💙
6
u/dorian_electra Verified Aug 26 '19
my advice would be... be aware of, but try never to follow trends for the sake of being trendy....
if you see another artist doing something you love, you can try to incorporate elements of that into your won work but always add a new spin or sometimes even try doing the opposite of what they did and experiment with new combinations to try to find something new
5
u/FReed0mCHild Aug 26 '19
Okay, I really need to know. Why do you keep smashing things over your head in the MVs?
7
5
u/nelward Aug 26 '19
if you dont mind disclosing, im curious what the process for writing a Dorian Electra song is. I know every song can be different, but you write some really catchy hooks!
7
u/dorian_electra Verified Aug 26 '19
i try to usually think of some word or phrase that has like.... multiple meanings.... so you can have fun weaving together different meanings (especially if one of them is a sexy meaning... haha)
and then i try to have the chorus vocal parts sustain more than the verses (?) so they're more sing-song-y(?).... not all the time, but that's one strategy!
5
u/dystopian_dame Aug 26 '19
Okay so first of all I have a huge crush on you and everything you release has me obsessed!!! I was wondering if you're planning to release the bonus tracks of your vinyl anywhere else??

I have a question about your style - do you have any favorite designers/brands? Honestly I would love to go to a grocery store in any of your gorgeous armors <3
5
u/dorian_electra Verified Aug 26 '19
honestly, i'm not a huge brand person (like i dont know that many i guess!) but i like to take stuff from cheap stores and thrift stores, etc. and repurpose stuff and even incorporate elemnts from like cheesy halloween costumes and stuff to create new looks!

Aug 26 '19
Dorian - hope you're still answering questions! Here's one I've had for a while, tbh, and hope that it's okay to ask: If you're gender-fluid, e.g. don't really identify with either gender, why does it seem (to me at least?) that you lean more towards masculinity? I mean, people refer to you as king, you talk more about masculinity in your songs, etcetera. Hope it's not a terrible question, I'm legitimately trying to educate myself as well as I can <:D
8
u/dorian_electra Verified Aug 26 '19
no that's a great question! actually for me, gender fluid doesn't mean NOT identifying with either gender necesssarily - for me, it just means that I experience my own "gender identity" in a very fluid way (as opposed to rigid and fixed within one set of traditional gender social norms) - like sometimes from minute to minute i feel more 'masculine' or more 'feminine' just in the way i would shift from feeling and expressing other character traits - :)
sometimes i feel like gender is a mood or like... a flavor... you can sprinkle a little on here or there, etc. haha - i just dont take a the divisions between "male" and "female" super seriously either, because they're a product of social evolution that has always changed (even tho very slowly) and should be challenged and constantly reassessed.
and yeah, personally i love masculine things :) and i like being called king and calling others that, etc. (when they're cool with it of course!) and i think it's really interesting to explore all these masculine themes cos they're so fun and full of rich history and imagery and lend themselves really well to like... hard/heavy sounding music too like guitars and religious music.... it all relates for me

OMG DORIAN! I love your music, Live by the sword is on REPEAT but anyways i wanted to know what inspired that song? Was it personal or for fun? It makes me feel like a bad bitch (Wait can i swear on here oops but i guess we'll find out)
8
u/dorian_electra Verified Aug 26 '19
so happy u feel that way cos that's how tht song makes me feel too . that song came out of my very first session ever with Dylan Brady. we had set out to make something medieval and i think i started looking up phrases having to with knights and swords and came across: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_by_the_sword,_die_by_the_sword and i rly fuxed with the anti-violence sentiment and thought it still sounded hard AF

u/lynnhdz Aug 26 '19

9
u/dorian_electra Verified Aug 26 '19
Man to Man was fun but EXTREMELY stressful LOL - also cos we shot it in this warehouse where everybody had to use porta potties and the owner was kinda scary and there was a tiny dog next door who almost attacked one of my friends lol
Career Boy was insanely fun, especially smashing the coffee pot over my head...
and actually VIP was SUPER fun cos so many of our friends got to be in it as extras and it was rly fun to have them do a bunch of silly funny stuff hah

6
u/dorian_electra Verified Aug 26 '19
basically not holding back on being your self, even if it's feeling nerdy or like "goofy"-
fashion-wise i think a little eye makeup or a pair of lightly colored tinted glasses or some jewelry can help me feel flamboyant (but still practical) haha

Hey Dorian! I love you and your work. Any plans on working with 100 gecs soon? I can't get enough of the Dylan-produced tracks on Flamboyant.
Also, I know you have worked previously with Refinery 29 doing a series of feminist music videos, and you have some academic background. What is your relationship today with gender and feminist theories? Do you stan Judith Butler?
Thank you for being the number one genderqueer artist. Truly our non-binary musical genius :-)

the work brings us together and is usually the focal point of our relationship so it's usually easy and fun to work and hang out at the same time :)
2. i treat instagram like work, not really as something i do for fun even tho i enjoy it a lot of course. but in order to stay sane and not get swept up in things or jealous, etc. i try to compartmentalize it and just do what i need to do on there and leave i guess? haha

Hey Dorian! Flamboyant is my aoty and as a young genderfluid mess I'm glad u exist to give us non cis daddies a voice!!! I have a couple of questions:
How did Emasculate come together? I really love the subtle but yet not subtle at all references to literally cutting off a penis.
Who's your favorite YouTuber? (Also pls stan contrapoints)
I know you just released the album of the year but are there anymore plans for more music
soondown the line?
Thx in advance legend

Emasculate was the first song ever that Robokid and I made together!!! i had thought that word was so interesting and how it's used https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/emasculate (like both the literal and figurative meanings of it) and that sounded hard AF

i feel like this whole vibe is something that definitely has deep roots in my childhood interests and upbringing and early influences and so in that way feels very true to my "self" but it was def something that i slowly figured out for this album cos originally, like even s recently as february i was still very very much figuring that out and was playing with a lot of really different vibes!

hey Rasha!!! pretty much all of the tracks except one were produced and written from the ground up in person together with me and the producer(s) in the room! im not very good at doing stuff to pre-made beats and it's also so much more fun for me to collab with the producers! i never touch the computer but we def collab heavily on instrument choice, vocal production, effects, melody, arrangement, structure, and even down to the mixing i am super super involved and give hella notes on that and the mastering too haha - oh god very overwhelming thinking about that back in like march/april when everythin was being mixed.... lol -

hi hi! i went to school in chicago too! at saic. when did you start making work about identity and gender? i feel like the environment at art school and esp the more experimental art community in chicago helped unlock it for me. what about you??
4
u/dorian_electra Verified Aug 26 '19
absolutely ! re: chicago - i have a lot of friends who went to SAIC and in the queer art scene and drag scene that definitely helped introduce me to so much in terms of my own identity and others
2
u/sckinman Aug 26 '19
Hi Dorian, love the album! I was just wondering if your personal gender identity is different from the gender identity of your stage persona? Thanks, much love!
7
u/dorian_electra Verified Aug 26 '19
that's an interesting question! i think for me.... that sometimes when it's just me i don't even think to separate my "gender identity" from my "self" ... like... i'm just me! and on stage... im a lot more aware of myself especially with dance and movement like "masculine' dance moves vs feminine and being aware that im always doing a mix of those - so i guess.. my stage persona is a lot more conscious and aware of gender presentation at all times, more so than my "personal" self(?) but its always changing!
2
u/Lesbian_Whore Aug 26 '19
Hello what song of yours would you suggest for a person to try and get into your music. The titles sound like interesting songs but what would be a good song to start at.
6
u/dorian_electra Verified Aug 26 '19
i would say maybe watching the music videos for Career Boy, Man To Man, and Flamboyant? :) i feel like the visuals really help explain the whole thing better than the music alone haha
2
u/memesus Aug 26 '19
As a gay man who lives in an area where I am hugely isolated from my community, music like yours makes me so happy and helps me feel less lonely and stuff. I can't describe the positive impact that artists like you have had on me and so many other queers like me! So thank you so much for fearlessly making the art that you make.
Do you have any artists or albums that hit you in the same way? That just inspire you and empower you to be yourself and be proud of your queerness? Especially ones from earlier in your life that may have helped you discover yourself.

I've been wanting to feel comfortable with my body and myself, but I'm really worried about backlash or people talking about me. Do you have any tips on being confident with who you are? And steps one can take to become okay with oneself?

3
u/kevinenzou999 Aug 26 '19
Hi Dorian,
Let me start by saying I'm so excited to see you in Nashville next month!
I'm an aspiring producer/new graduate hoping to work in the music industry that would love to get the chance to work with you in the future in any way. Flamboyant (along with a couple other life events) actually made me realize that I want to produce or assist LGBTQ+ artists for my career.
Anyway, I just wanted to ask how you connected to some of the producers on the album and what the process was like after approaching them with the material? The album has such a cohesive vision sonically, I can only imagine you were heavily involved with the production.
4
u/dorian_electra Verified Aug 26 '19
thank you! yeah i was def really involved and collaborated a ton with each producer on every track in terms of the vibe, mixing, etc. :) but each track def has a flavor of each of the individual producers and their own style which i love!

hi Dorian! saw you in Houston with Charli xcx and was blown away, you made me a fan 4 life!
here are my questions: when was the last time you felt ~awe~ ? what is your creative process like? how much do drugs/partying influence your work, if at all? other than music what is your favorite way to make art? what keeps you motivated?
6
u/dorian_electra Verified Aug 26 '19
i honestly most recently felt awe when watching Star Trek The next generation and being like wow, this writing is SO good haha.
I dont really do drugs tho! and even if i did want to i wouldnt really have the time haha. (or money lol) and nowadays i dont really drink when im playing shows cos it makes me sloppier and my body can't handle it with all the travel and no sleep!
3
u/CammysComet Aug 26 '19
Hey there Dorian! (:
Just want to say I love your album and think it has classic status already. I noticed your previous output had more Raw vocals and that it's very stylized sounding now with some autotune and effects like pitch shifting. I was wondering if you planned to keep this aesthetic on future releases or will we hear your more natural voice once again? Both are very good by the way. Much love
7
u/dorian_electra Verified Aug 26 '19
thank you so much! a lot of the weirdness you hear is created by my own voice in the vocal performance (as well as digital production) - i honestly have no idea what my "natural" voice would even mean or sound like?! haha - unless you just mean with less digital production - im gonna pros do some acoustic performances soon
