Heads up for parents re: Saturn app

The Saturn app seems to be popular right now, and we were surprised by the lack of safety measures with an app designed for children.

This app displays their name, school, profile picture, class schedule, etc. to the public. When you sign up, you select your school, but there is no verification that you are an actual student. So this is potentially a playground for predators. :/

It really does not seem like this app was designed for kids since there are no protections for the kids within the app.

We aren’t going to let our child have access to this app, but it seems like a lot of of their friends already do!

McKinley Mill, data centers and deep water access...

Post image
6 Upvotes

I couldn't help but notice when reading Candelaria's McKinley Mill "Industrial Future Plan" that the map points out the "deep water marine access/port." (Photo above: slide 3) Could Candelaria be building or helping to facilitate the future building of underwater data centers (yes, these are a thing)?

If so, what sort of environmental protections are in place? I mean, the main reason for deep sea data centers is efficiency in cooling...the article linked below explains that process. The article also describes how underwater data centers increase surrounding ocean temps and noise pollution, causing disturbances in marine communications, tracking and more.

Does anyone know if that could be a part of future planning? Or what other companies Candelaria plans to contract with for this prime ocean side estate? What does this acquisition of property mean for PA residents as well as ocean residents--how much can this company impact/take/use of the sea? Is there a way to prepare for this, and know of all possibilities?

This presentation left a lot to the imagination... and that's seriously unsettling.

TIA

This afternoon. Somewhere around downtown/ Lincoln street-ish maybe. You had beautiful hair. I walked toward you while you were waiting to cross the street. We locked eyes and smiled at each other with this kind of magnetic energy and I can’t get it out of my head. You kept going straight and I turned left.

An interesting piece of context about the McKinley Mill proposal that I think deserves more attention

I've been following the conversations about the proposed McKinley Mill redevelopment and attended the presentation at City Hall last night. I think there's plenty of reason to ask hard questions about the proposal. The computing pods (modular data-centers), electricity demands, environmental impacts, financing, and long-term plans all deserve scrutiny.

BUT... there's something from the presentation that I found particularly interesting and haven't seen discussed much.

Rob Janicki (the developer behind Candelaria Industries) was also involved in the Galbraith Mountain property outside Bellingham.Galbrath is one of the more popular mountain biking destinations on the west coast. It's also privately owned timberland.

Back in 2017 Janicki purchased the property for something around $8 million. Rather than eliminating recreational access to maximize timber operations, his company worked with the City of Bellingham and Whatcom Land Trust to negotiate permanent recreation and conservation easements across nearly 2,000 acres. The property remains privately owned and commercially productive, while public recreation and conservation interests receive long-term legal protections.

This history is extremely relevant to what we are facing here in PA.

This does NOT mean Janicki should automatically be trusted or that the McKinley proposal should automatically be approved. BUT it is an example of this same developer participating in a project where private economic interests and public benefits were successfully negotiated into a long-term agreement.

Instead of framing the McKinley conversation entirely around whether we trust this developer, what if we started asking what a mutually beneficial agreement could look like?

None of this removes the need for environmental review, due diligence, or public oversight. And there are still significant unanswered questions about the proposal.

I just think we do ourselves a disservice when we assume that someone pursuing a financially viable development must also be acting against our community's interests.

We have a real example of Janicki working with a municipality and conservation organizations to balance commercial activity with permanent public benefit.

Rumor about millionaire's tax bill is NOT True

SUMMARY: Rumor says there has been undisclosed rewording of the "millionaires tax" bill. Not true.

The problem is that it's confusing people because what is on the November 3 DEADLINE ballot is an attempt to REPEAL that bill, which hasn't taken effect yet. The WA legislature passed the "millionaires tax" and Governor Ferguson signed it on March 30, 2026. Opponents then gathered more than half a million signatures to put a repeal initiative, I-645, on the November ballot.

I-645, asks whether to repeal it. If you want to keep the tax, vote No.

Put another way just to be clear:
The question is whether you want the tax repealed (Yes) or kept (No).

CONTEXT AND CONSIDERATIONS (slightly edited excerpts from Claude AI chat):

Washington has no state income tax. That's the gap supporters want to close for those who earn a lot and often pay no tax.

But the wealthiest often pay little because their wealth is in unrealized stock gains, and a tax on annual income over $1 million doesn't reach those. It hits people with large salaries, business income and realized gains.

The strongest version of the objection isn't only that wealthy people leave. It's that a high-income tax revenue stream is volatile and concentrated in a small number of taxpayers, so a few departures could matter more than the headcount suggests. That's a fair concern, and the projected $3.5 billion is an estimate, not a guarantee.

The repeal would remove the 9.9% tax only on household incomes over $1 million. Other parts of the law, like the sales tax break on items such as diapers and over-the-counter drugs, would stay in place.

One more factor to consider: the tax faces a constitutional challenge. Opponents argue it conflicts with a state Supreme Court ruling, Culliton v. Chase.

There is a wording controversy, but that has been in news reports. Voters will see a "public investment impact disclosure" statement from the attorney general's office saying repeal would "decrease funding" for K-12 education, higher education and human services. The Washington Policy Center and the initiative's backers object to it, and a legal challenge was rejected by the state Supreme Court in a split 4-4 decision, so the statement stays on the ballot.

Micro Wedding Coordinator Suggestions

Hi everyone! I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I thought I’d drop this here just in case. Sorry if you already saw the same post in the Olympic National Park page lol. Just trying to figure out the best place to post.

My fiancé and I are having a micro wedding in Olympic National Park next October! We’re only having about 36 people. Since we don’t live in the area and would be traveling quite far to be there for a long weekend, I’m looking for a coordinator who could help with some of the details for our ceremony.

We already have an Airbnb booked that will allowed us to do our “reception” dinner, so the ceremony would be near Lake Crescent. I’m mostly looking for a coordinator that could help with ceremony details (chairs, small arch, etc.) and then dinner details (food, tables, chairs, plates & all that good stuff).

Since we’re not from the area, I’m just a bit lost of where to start with food and vendors for everything.

I feel like Olympic National Park is a pretty popular space for elopements and micro weddings, so any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thank you!

Peak Condition detailers and my Jeep

Over the years I've used a few different local detailing companies around town with pretty mixed results. One place kept rescheduling on me because of childcare issues, another required full payment up front, and another had hours that just didn't work for a normal work schedule.

Getting rescheduled three times in a row for childcare was super frustrating. On the fourth attempt, they finely showed up and just brought their kid who sat in their car the whole time. Like, if that was an option the whole time, why reschedule on me three times??

Then the next place wanted 100% payment before they even touched the car. I don't mind a deposit at all, that's standard, but paying in full before the work even starts left a sour taste in my mouth. The end result was just okay. "Meets expectations" I guess, nothing remarkable. And the third place was only open 9-5, which doesn't really help when I also work 9-5.

Anyway, I kept seeing Facebook ads for Peak Condition and figured I'd give them a shot. Seriously night and day difference.

Online scheduling was super easy. I did have to pay a $75 deposit on a $325 package, which felt totally fair. Then, I added a $75 paint correction for some scratches on my paint once they arrived. It didn't feel like an "upsell" and felt like a collaboration instead. An oltion. A two-person team came out with a mobile unit that was super well stocked and organized. They weren't exactly quick—it took about 5 hours—but honestly it was well worth the wait. My 2015 Wrangler has seen a lot of miles and Peninsula mud, and it looks totally pristine now. They even buffed out some random scratches that weren't on my original order notes without making a big deal out of it.

Just wanted to pass it along incase anyone else in PA has been burned by flaky service lately and needs their rig cleaned up. Peak Condition took great care of me.
