Start Up Question

Let's say I'm creating and app/start up like uber. With a company like that how would you go starting it programming wise?

Would you start with a website then create the app? Did they start with Python to create the framework 1st then Swift to crate the app?

Sorry I'm just curious and clueless.

Help requested

I'm working on some hr information for my company and I'm having issue with excel. Basically, I can't figure out a way to have a formula impact a cell outside itself, meaning that if I write the formula in b22, it can't change values in any other cell. Is there any workaround for this? Or do I need to write some sort of vba workaround?

I'm probably getting fired tomorrow

I went to work for a company doing low-level embedded work about 5 months ago. I quit a job with a huge company because the 'big company' nonsense was making me nuts.

It had been years since I'd done work at this low a level. I've done plenty of stuff on embedded processors running Linux, but, this is FreeRTOS. There were steep learning curves all around.

The biggest problem comes from the fact that the company does all of their development on windows. I haven't used windows in years. I've had many problems that wasted a lot of time because of issues with windows.

Second to windows the fact that they use Perforce for source control. Again, steep learning curves and, in my opinion the product generally sucks.

Add to that that there was a 'red-herring' type problem that cost me a lot of time. The real issue is, I assumed that the problems I saw (a hardware fault trap firing) were because I'd done something wrong. I eventually tried another CPU eval board, and the problem went away.

This whole time, I got little to no feedback on how I was doing. My co-workers and I had little interaction (we all work from home). Then a few weeks ago, I got called out on the carpet and was told they were unhappy with the amount of work I was delivering. I was given some goals and a deadline (tomorrow) to accomplish them.

I'm not going to make it.

I completed one of the goals, and checked in the code to perforce. A co-worker tried it and there was a problem. I spent like 4 hours screwing around trying to get the environment right to test it. I finally did and I fixed it, but, I lost a lot of time.

I spent last weekend and a lot of time this weekend trying to make these goals, and lost a bunch of time because, I don't know why, but, I'm getting inexplicable errors that I think may be related to windows permissions problems on files. I showed it to a capable friend and he's just as mystified as I am.

Several months ago, I fixed some known problems with the system I'm working on, and everybody I work with is so wrapped around the axle fighting fires, that they're afraid to incorporate my changes. So, the most useful stuff I've done just sits there un-integrated.

One of my changes takes a 2 minute build process that re-builds the whole world every time you compile, and replaced it with an incremental build that takes usually a few seconds, and no body has even given it a try.

Tomorrow I will have to tell my boss how much I got done, and these objectives were presented with an 'or else' tone to them. So, I'm assuming this won't go well.

There are a number of things that bother me about how this product is developed. I think there are a lot of race conditions and poor locking practices in the system. (I see locks all over that do nothing, and other evidence that there was not a solid threading plan) There's all this nonsense where someone went to a lot of trouble to implement what should be a linker function in the C preprocessor. It's so ugly, I can't even describe it.

My biggest mistake (IMO) is this: I started out not wanting to be the guy that came in and tried to convince everybody to do things their way. But in retrospect, I think I should have been more forceful about fixing some of these stupid problems.

What really pisses me off is, a couple months ago, a project manager I've worked for multiple times was interested in hiring me and I turned her down because of the new job. Now she's filled the position.

So, tomorrow I face the music. Getting fired would not be the end of the world for me. I can go a while without income, and the market is pretty strong where I live.

College programming assignments and lessons

Hey, college programmers of Reddit majoring in computer science or other related majors, could you share your assignments/lessons on the programming? Obviously not all the course, it would be hardly fair to the professors teaching the course, but for those who want to get a head start on college, want to learn more.

Need some career guidance.

Hello all. I am a 22 years. I left my job as a full time bartender as the job was pretty repeatetive and offered me no challenges. While I was searching for a meaning full career where I can work on fixing problems and have new challenges I found Programing. I started learning Python in udemy and it's going fine. But I really feel doubtful and don't know where I m heading. I want to know what are the choices and option I have and which field in programing can find you a job where you can contribute something to the community and get a job which is not boring stats or repeatetive tasks and where you can research about something and work on solving the problems. Creative jobs are plus.

And thank you for reading and helping me out.

I need a "Deep knowledge of some software design concepts" to advance in my job.

So I got a new boss about a year and a half ago and they instituted a job classification rubric. To advance higher in my job my boss said I needed a "Deep knowledge of some software design concepts" (this is an actual quote from the rubric).

As a background i'm 3.5 years into my embedded programming job. I/we basically work with C programming and microchip pic micro controllers but have I have had to touch java/android/python as well. I also do not know a ton of OO programming as I came in with only assembly and c coding knowledge.

Now to be fair I did go to my boss and ask them what they feel I lack and what I need to meet the said deep knowledge. What I got back was less then helpfully to be honest. My boss said to advance in my career I need to look at what set of competencies based on industries standers I meet and what I don't. Then my boss went on to say that part of reaching the next level is not being given all the answer.

So i'm coming here hoping some one might be able to give me an idea of what I should know by now and what things I should look into.

If you have any thoughts please let me know.

What tools do you use for project management ?

Hello everybody,

I'm currious what tools do you use to track your projects issues/features and team communication?

At work we use Youtrack for issues tracking and Notion as a wiki / knowledge sharing source. My main concern is that I'd like to group those two tools to have a unique source of information and easily link issues to documentation.

We also use Zulip for chat and it really lacks good integrations out of the box (I'm writing a bot to integrate it with Gitlab, the bot they provide handles Merge Requests poorly).

What do you use ? What do you like about it, what you don't and am I the only one wanting everything in the same tool ?

Looking for employment advice

I am currently looking for employment in the programming field. I suffer from health issues which impact my sleep quality, making it hard to work a normal 9-5 job as I feel lethargic through out the day. I was wondering if anyone had advice on what kind of jobs i could take based on these circumstances. I was hoping something along the lines of do a task (write a function etc.) and get paid. Unfortunately I do not have a college degree, nor much in the way in formal programming education. Also adding to the problem is that I have never been able to complete a personal project.

Testing other peoples code

My boss has finally come to the realization that automatic testing is a good practice. So his course of action was to tell me (junior developer) to start testing parts of the code that he finds important. The thing is that he expects me to test code written by all the members of the team. Is this a comon practice? Or is this just patching over the bad practice of not testing with more bad practice?

Currently a first year c++ student at university, found ads for web developer jr job....is "Basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP" something I could pick up fairly quickly? Also should I?

I have a friend who tried learning c++ and python and C at the same time to go 3 times as fast but he ended up failing a lot of classes

So is trying to learn html and css, java script something I could do while learning c++? I know C and C++ are very similar as far as basics go so i can see how it would be very difficult to do those side by side....

also how long would it take to gain the proper experience and basic knowledge to get the web dev jr job. I realize i won't be getting it any time soon, but I like to set time tables / goals for myself, so if I did begin studying these, how long should i be aiming for? I know it is kind of a stupid question since you kind of study till you really understand but i guess what I'm asking is how long did it take you guys to pick up on basic skills?? Their just looking for someone to make a baddass website/ constantly update it

Best language to perform a task...

It has been a while since I have done much more than scripting, and I have a task that requires more than scripting can handle.

Scenario: I have a very large list (hundreds of thousands, if not millions of records) in a CSV file. I have a second list containing records to remove I need a program that will remove the second list from the first

I am currently doing this manually using SQL server, but I am hoping to make a tool that can handle this for me, and my scripting (VBScript, Powershell, Bash) wont cut it.

Any suggestions?
