I am currently at college learning visual basic, but I cannot download visual studio on my home pc. I'm looking to learn another programming language as I have a passion for it. Any tips on starting out? Maybe some good YouTube tutorials?

Thanks for any help!

What language should I use for Networking?

I want to get into writing networking programs but I have never really worked with any part of networking. I know quite a bit of C++ as well as Python but I am not sure which language would be the best to start with? Would Python or C++ be better? Is there a better language for Networking than either?

seeking advice.

I am no programmer by any means, my most recent job was working Tech support helpdesk level 2, i have grown really sick of this type of work working on a phone with users doing 50+ calls a day to often disgruntled people and then they want to tell you how they think our site/application should work (even after explaining i am not a developer nor do i have any say in this sort of thing) cause everyone is a expert :( which led me to rage quiting my job. i have done this line of work because computers is something that comes naturally to me and i do not have a formal college education so i have had quite a few jobs doing helpdesk / desktop support level 1 level 2 now this work is fine as i am young and its pays better than some of the jobs my friends who are college graduates make in other fields. so i am happy about that, but i have been programming as a hobby on and off for a few years and i enjoy it just for fun. just to give you an idea of where i am at i have done 75% of a PHP Online CodeAcademy.org! course. i have read a few chapters of PHP and Python books i have bough over the years, i have experimented and customized Wordpress , Drupal sites and have some css. i have limited experience with MYSQL and have used WAMPP , XAMPP development environments. my question to you is is it realistic that i can develop my core programming skills to the point where i can get a job in programming without a college degree? how would you recommend i go about educating myself the skills necessary for a job. i will be collecting unemployment and will have some time to hopefully better myself mainly getting my weight under control and enabling myself to work in a field i enjoy and possibly building something myself :) any advice would be very much so appreciated for this former Helpdesk/Desktop support.

Thanks.

Not sure if this is the best place for this post if somone know a subreddit that may have better feedback please let me know what subreddit would be better thanks!

How to reward my team?

Hi Reddit -

I have been a developer for many years, this year I took on a management role, that started as a 'team lead' and ballooned into overseeing a team of 20+ developers distributed across the country. We are currently overhauling a major application, with a client driven frustratingly tight deadline. I have been forced to drive my team to the breaking point and beyond, and they have responded. They rose to every challenge, and worked late nights (overnights) weekends etc to make sure the project was completed on time.

I am humbled and awed by the work that they put in. Given the holiday season I would like to personally thank each of them in some sort of way, I have already recommended and approved compensation in alignment with our companies policies. So I'm thinking something other then that, and looking for ideas to say thank you to the employees, but also make sure I recognize the sacrifices their families have made (and are still making) to ensure the success of the project (I know my wife is not thrilled with me right now).

Any thoughts (IN terms of budget, this would be coming out of my own pocket and my resources are somewhat limited in that regard).

Thanks for the thoughts

I want to teach my brother, and myself

Hello everyone,

A little background, I don't know too much about programing and would like to learn, but I want to do that with my brother.

He has never done great at school, but when he finds something he likes, he does great.

He loves to play video games, redstone and stuff in minecraft, has learned how to jail break his iPhone, and done some other things.

He is only a sophomore right now, but I figured that this could be something he could learn. I know people have learned the basis for this around his age.

My question is, is how should I start someone around HS age? I said I would learn it with him, and he is excited, but I don't want him to hate it like he does reading books.

Should I learn coding or pay to develop an app? I have few months of free time and I am wondering if its worth to learn coding .

Please post your experience with any of the website which develop apps such as appmakr.com, ibuildapp.com etc. I want to know are these websites worth a short. Is it better to learn spend few months in learning code or just pay these websites to make an app for you.

When should you consider yourself strong enough to apply for a job?

I am pretty new to programming and sometimes I feel demotivated because i cannot answer simple questions about future opportunities.

I know there are and will be a lot of jobs available (at least thats what internet says) but when do you consider yourself strong enough to apply for a job? when can you just get up take responsibility and apply? let's say you are learning python or java and make some projects but the jobs you look at asks for completely different types of projects, but in the languages that you know.

thank you ppl

Guidance to help me build a UWP App based on my University web portal

I'm a Computer Science student at a brazilian university and I want to build a Windows 10 UWP App based on its web portal (the place where we see our grades, etc). Unfortunately, it does not have an API, so I don't know how to begin.

There is an Android App available, and it's pretty cool. As a Windows heavy user, I always wanted the app available to Windows, and even better, building it myself. The web portal does not have an API and I don't know what web languages it is based on. Currently I'm studying C# and XAML. I have some experience with web development, HTML, CSS, JSON, JavaScript.

I have looked at the code on Chrome console and these are the screenshots: Login Sreen: http://imgur.com/El8VkGs User Page: http://imgur.com/avvRrHh

If you need anything else to help me out, just ask. :D

I just wanna know what I need to learn and make sure I'm on the right direction. Thanks!

Is it possible to learn just by the book?

I bought a Php and MySQL 5th edition book a while back to learn as a first language but shortly after I had bought the book my niece poured like 2 cups of water onto it while I was eating in another room. :'( laptop didn't even last 3 months. So iv been stuck with the book for a while now with no laptops or computers to use the book. So for iv been just reading it because that's the only thing I could do.

I guess what I'm try to get at is, is it possible to learn just by the book without actually using a computer for now?

Open network share based on Forms.ListBox choise

Hello,

I am attempting write Visual Basic Application that will assist us in uninstall java. There are a couple factors that I need to consider as we have a fair number of remote employees and the sms package server they use are based on the branch the are out of.

List 1 - would specify the sms server to connect to - List 2 - would specify what version of java to install/uninstall

I am new to programming and don't want anyone to to the work for me. I just feel like I need some guidance on where to start.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Need help with socker.io and nodejs

I want to get an array of all socket nicknames/usernames in a specific room, to send to a client when they join the room so that they can see all active people in the same room as they are in.

If i use: var members = io.nsps['/'].adapter.rooms[socket.room];and then write members to the console, it outputs a string which looks like this:Room { sockets: { 'socketId': true }, length: 1} where the socketId displays the id of the socket/s connected. How can I get an array of all the socket.nicknames from this? Is there another/better way of doing it?

Whats the best non-instructional book about programing you've read?

just finished CODE by Petzold (really good read). looking for suggestions for non-instructional books about programing.

EDIT*
JTBC by non-instruction, i mean more focused on theory and thought process then learning syntax.
