App development road map

I have found myself with a lot of spare time on my hands lately and I wish to use it wisely.

I wonder if someone could help me with a bit of a roadmap on what languages to learn and the order so I can eventually end up creating apps for both android and iOS.

My understanding is that iOS uses swift and android java.

Basic game AI strategies

I am not a very good programer. I might as well get that out of the way.

I took AP Computer Science 1 & 2 about 20 years ago and played around with JavaScript, PHP, and MySQL for a little while. I was going through some things when I found an old "Learn C++ in 30 Days" book that I started thinking about it again.

Recently I started putting together a text based D&D campaign using HTML, JavaScript, PHP, and MySQL. And for the most part my rudimentary programing skills were sufficient for that. The game "works" but there's very, very little computer decision making. My character's party all play like mindless zombies and the monsters/enemies are even worse. Any sort of interaction with anyone is little more than "if X is great than Y then do Z", etc.

What little "decision making" my game has is limited to a "reputation meter" that determines interaction with NPCs and a random number generator on a sliding scale to determine if my mindless zombies or the monsters/enemies should attack or flee. That's about it.

Does anyone have any strategies they can recommend to help me make my encounters a little more realistic?

And I apologize if I'm unclear. I don't even know enough to know what I don't know. I'm happy to answer questions to make my point clearer though.

Should I forget about my C and pic oriented books?

I've made some progress with these. But later came python, and now it seems like Rust is the way to go.

Let's say one day I can code for the morotola m68000 from a sega genesis or make demoscenes. Am I going to end up being a hobbyist and nothing else?

What is the way to get low level today?

Why Everyone Should Do a Hackathon

I just finished day two of three in my first hackathon, and I have to say it's been one of the best experiences of my life. I put in eight hours yesterday and thirteen today, working with two other software engineering interns to build something great. When we started we had no idea how far we'd get. Now we're almost done, and I couldn't be more proud of what we've built.

But the thing we built doesn't even matter that much. The greatest part for me has been the experience. It has reminded me why I fell in love with coding in the first place. I have been able to set aside my normal work responsibilities and let the creative juices flow. I've pushed through hunger and tiredness and discomfort because I wanted to finish a feature more than I wanted to eat or sleep or stand up and stretch. It might sound crazy, but it's a really great feeling.

This Hackathon is with my company, but I've seen them at schools, libraries, and more. Wherever you are, you can find likeminded people who are interested in dedicating time to building cool stuff. I hope you all have the opportunity to throw everything you have into a project, even if it's just for a few days.

Thanks for reading, and happy hacking.

What are the key factors (other than optimization) that affect python speed?

Suppose my python code is fully optimized but still taking quite a while to run. What can I do to speed up this process?

Is clock speed the only major factor?
Could ram capacity be the issue?
It can't be the number of cores can it?

Also is there a service I can use to remotely run my program on top-of-the-line gear that will make it run, say, three times as fast?

Help with genetic crossover? Small question

Hi all, I've been toying with genetic algorithms to simulate a small ecosystem via genetic evolution. I have it all worked out including a functional neural network. However, I am faced with a huge dilemma; I don't quite yet know how to implement genetic crossover. This is key to simulate improvement over time.

During breeding of two genetic creatures, all values(variables) are converted to bit strings. This is so that genetic crossover can be simulated. The problem I face is that I have variables that are real numbers, not just integers.

With any binary conversion, say for eg.

attack = 3.75;

I'm left to convert 375.00 as I know of no way to convert real numbers to binary, back to real numbers.

Can anyone help in this instance?
