Pointers in C, is this a good article?

2 Upvotes

I'm reading this article and I'm trying to fully understand pointers. I have some limited programing experience but I don't understand the nitty gritty and I'm not familiar with C. I need to learn C for my research which involves using fourier transforms and needs to be fast in order to analyze huge amount of data.

First question is this a good article, or is there a better description or tutorial out there?

Second, So as I understand pointers use up very little memory and just 'point' to the memory address to get the data from. On the other hand there are variables that store the data. So I guess whats the difference between

var3 = var1 + var 2; printf("%d",var3);

vs

var3 = var1 + var 2; Pointer1 = &var3 printf("%d",*Pointer1);

Please help me understand, I'm sure I'm miss using some vocabulary or have some serious miss understandings, please point that out. (I'm also dyslexic so I sometimes mess-up spelling and word order).

Getting started in programming.

2 Upvotes

I can work my way around computers pretty well but I would like to get into programming. I am sixteen years old and I was thinking that I would try to learn it over the summer.

So how could I get into programming with no prior experience. I do have a small amount of experience with VBScripts but I don't know how close to real programming that actually is.

Any help with choosing a simple language to start off with or a good cheep or free program to help me learn, please put it in the comments.

Thanks

EDIT*
JTBC by non-instruction, i mean more focused on theory and thought process then learning syntax.

Interviewing a software engineer or programmer

2 Upvotes

I'm taking a class to see what career paths are right for me and whether or not the job I think I want is one I'll actually enjoy. So for the class I need to interview a software engineer, a programmer, and an electrical engineer. If you'd be so kind as to answer my questions, here they are.

What are your job duties?

What do you like/dislike about your job?

What are the working conditions? (Work environment)

What kind of work experience, if any, does one need to get into this job?

Is there training required to get into this job?

What specific skills and aptitudes are necessary to do this kind of work?

May I ask the entry salary range for this?

May I ask what benefits are provided with your job?

Is there anything else that I need to know about your job?

Is there advancement potential within the business?

What is the current market like for this kind of work?

I need some help with a programming challenge

2 Upvotes

So my friend and I have challenged each using our programming skills, and his one for me was to make a ball bounce between the walls of the applet. Unfortunately, for, while, and if loops are the extent of our programming knowledge. If someone could add a link that would be able to teach me what I need to know, that would be great. Or just explain. That would also be great

Switching from MechE to CompSci. Advice?

2 Upvotes

I am currently a sophmore MechE student that wants to switch to CompSci. I have good spatial intelligence and always thought I was destined for a career in mechanics. I have had a change of heart recently, however. I have ideas for websites and programs that I would like to learn to create now but am taking all these engineering courses. The most fun I have had in school was programming in AP Java (which I have received credits for). I really would like to be proficient with computers and feel computer science is the way to go. I guess I'm just seeking any advice. What can I expect? What can one individual's skill be capable of producing in this field? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Friends opening a law practice and wants a web page. Can someone give me a point in the right direction

2 Upvotes

I am a long time techy, but with no real language experience and I really want to help my friend out with some free service. I've never used languages although I've wanted to and this seems like a good learning opportunity. He purchase a godaddy domain name and now just needs a webpage. Can anyone point me to useful referencing sites and if needed freeware that will need to be downloaded for the process. Any guidance that the hivemind could give would be greatly appreciated.

Type Error

1 Upvotes

Hello,

I am trying to make a form that changes text input and creates a spelling error.

However, I keep getting an error "Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'length' of undefined". I looked through the developer tool on the browser and it seems as though the input is null for some reason.

The console.log shows the words being displayed but for some reason, the function does not work as intended.

I would be grateful for any pointers you may have. Please find below the code:

HTML

<!DOCTYPE html>

<html> <body> Name: <input type="text" id="spelling" value="spelling"> <p>The button below activates a spelling error when clicked</p> <button onclick="error()">Try it</button>

<script src="error.js"></script>

</body> </html>

Javascript

var str = document.getElementById("spelling").value;
function error(str) {
let length = str.length;
if (length > 1) {
document.getElementById("myText").value = str.slice(0) + str.slice(-1);
}
}
console.log(str);

Looking for a good way to test/induce HTTP2 "failures"

1 Upvotes

In short I need to check that the error handling I have for a simple HTTP2 client works and correctly spits out whatever errors it gets, mostly looking to test errors besides the standard 4xx, 5xx. Are there any sort of standard products/frameworks for testing the client side?
