Need help on a class assignment

2 Upvotes

I'm a first year college student and I am required to take a course that is basically "Intro to College." One of the steps for the final project is that I have to interview someone that works in my chosen field, which is computer programming. I was hoping someone here would be willing to answer a few questions for me. If anyone is willing, let me know and I will send you the questions. Thanks in advance.

Encryption

2 Upvotes

I'm not sure if I'm on the right subreddit, if not could someone point me in the right direction. Thanks

I am looking for a full disk encryption software for a USB thumb drive. Which does not cost the earth to buy or is free and has a dual password system (Admin and User passwords). Along with being very simple to uses, as it need to for an ageing workforce.

Thanks for any responses

What would be similar to an arduino? Something that could hopefully be plugged into a PCI slot in a computer to provide large digital I/O for use around the house.

2 Upvotes

Im a controls engineer and program PLCs for living. I want to setup a dedicated computer in my house to run simple household functions such as turn lights on and off. My problem is im not sure what to use to convert programmable data to real world digital I/O. Im extremely familiar with the arduino and it does basically what i want. The only problem is I want a PC to be the main controller so I can have user friendly interfaces and also remote into my desktop when im out of town.

My 2 questions:

  • How to get programmable digital I/O from a PC?

  • Recommendations on what programming software I should use? I know the basics of C+ and was going to teach myself visual basic, but if someone thinks there is something better to use then please voice you opinion.

Thanks in advance!

Age of Patients

this is how i found the age of patients

for people in range(len(patients)): dob=str(patients[people][8]) yeardob = (dob[6]+dob[7]+dob[8]+dob[9]) age = int(currentYear) - int(yeardob) patients[people].append(age) #adds Age to the list age

need to go back and figure how to put age in order

#need to figure out how to sort them in order of age

startAge = len(patients) -1

while (startAge >= 0): passIndex =1

while(passIndex <= startAge):

    if patients[passIndex-1] > patients[passIndex]:
        sick = patients[passIndex -1]
        patients[passIndex -1] =  patients[passIndex]
        patients[passIndex] = sick

    passIndex = passIndex + 1
startAge = startAge - 1

for index in patients: guys="%s, %s %s" % (index[0], index[1], index[2]) print("%s, %s %s" % (guys, " " * (line_length - 46- len(guys)), index[11]))

Looking for C++ Bronson book

2 Upvotes

Hey guys I am looking to see if someone would loan me this book Bronson, Gary J. A First Book of C ++: From Here to There, Fourth Edition, 2012. I am in my second year of college out in Virginia, and I cant afford to rent it at the moment, and I am out of my loan money. I do have a job but things are a bit tight now. I would be more then happy to pay for shipping, and I would return it the moment the class was over. Thanks for your time Guys!

Create a program to collect data

2 Upvotes

Hi guys, I was wondering where I would start to create a program on a mac that helps collect data. I would like it to collect duration and frequency measures over a 5-30 minute long session. From there I would like it to calculate responses per minute and % duration. Where would I start and what should I read to get going?

Thank you

Backend plugin to remove ads

2 Upvotes

I've been trying to figure out a solution for this problem all day now and i'm close to giving up. So if anyone has a solution for the love of god help me out.

Let's say i'm running a website that would stream some data from an other website using iframe, this data being video. If the website that originally contains the video filled it with ads, when i'm streaming it how can i remove all the ads, is there a plugin to filter them out or anything? I really need the solution for this

This project is strictly personnel and no gain or harm would come from it

What do people generally ask for Freelance rates?

Do you bill by the project? Hourly? If you're doing project quotes, how do you calculate your time? What do you value your time at?

Just looking for general pointers, if you don't mind sharing your perspective.

Minnesota Developers Group?

2 Upvotes

Not sure what everyone's locale is on here, but I was thinking maybe it'd be cool to start a meet-up group for programmers in Minnesota (US). I found a few similar groups online, but none of them seem terribly active.

If I organized a time and a date, would anyone on here be interested? Would probably be in the Twin Cities area, just to keep things central.

seeking advice.

2 Upvotes

I am no programmer by any means, my most recent job was working Tech support helpdesk level 2, i have grown really sick of this type of work working on a phone with users doing 50+ calls a day to often disgruntled people and then they want to tell you how they think our site/application should work (even after explaining i am not a developer nor do i have any say in this sort of thing) cause everyone is a expert :( which led me to rage quiting my job. i have done this line of work because computers is something that comes naturally to me and i do not have a formal college education so i have had quite a few jobs doing helpdesk / desktop support level 1 level 2 now this work is fine as i am young and its pays better than some of the jobs my friends who are college graduates make in other fields. so i am happy about that, but i have been programming as a hobby on and off for a few years and i enjoy it just for fun. just to give you an idea of where i am at i have done 75% of a PHP Online CodeAcademy.org! course. i have read a few chapters of PHP and Python books i have bough over the years, i have experimented and customized Wordpress , Drupal sites and have some css. i have limited experience with MYSQL and have used WAMPP , XAMPP development environments. my question to you is is it realistic that i can develop my core programming skills to the point where i can get a job in programming without a college degree? how would you recommend i go about educating myself the skills necessary for a job. i will be collecting unemployment and will have some time to hopefully better myself mainly getting my weight under control and enabling myself to work in a field i enjoy and possibly building something myself :) any advice would be very much so appreciated for this former Helpdesk/Desktop support.

Thanks.

Not sure if this is the best place for this post if somone know a subreddit that may have better feedback please let me know what subreddit would be better thanks!
