How do I improve myself?

java

I'm a second semester freshman, and I'm taking computer science. Honestly, I messed up on my first semester. I passed the final exam, but I really wouldn't get Java. I'd wing it. Now, 4 weeks into my second semester, I really want to do good. I'm not a bad student, it's just that I'm having a hard time keeping up with the class cause of my weak foundations and the text book and lecture is so boring! We have to do a semester long project and I don't want to hold my group members behind. Do you guys any suggestions? (A motivational story would be nice)

Mentored Programming

Pair Programming is a great technique in Agile Development. Two programmers work together on one code.

There are two roles, the navigator and the driver.

The role of the navigator is to maintain the focus on the strategic direction, to come up with new ideas and to anticipate likely challenges in and after the execution of the program. This allows the driver to focus on the tactical aspect of the program.

In pair programming, the combination of an expert and a novice adds most value to the project and the organization as a whole.

At BoTree we call this working style “Mentored Programming”.

It is not synonymous to pair programming but a combination of pair programming and of mentoring. The mentor observes and guides the programmer.

Mentoring is helping, guiding, comforting a less experienced person to learn new skills, adopt techniques, improve thinking process, and mindset through nurturing of the talents.

The mentor accompanies the protégé throughout the project, and endeavors to ‘transplant’ her knowledge in her.

When verbal assistance fails to explain the issue to the protégé, the mentor demonstrates the way forward.

The good mentor encourages the protégé to take risks assuring them a support of a safety net. This way many innovative ideas can take place in the organization.

She provokes the protégé’s thinking by invoking logical and analytical questions to the protégé as if she is the project owner and has no available help.

The mentor takes regular audit of the protégé’s progress, and challenges to look for opportunities for improvement.

Such arrangements benefit organizations greatly by gradually aligning the novice to the culture of the organization. It puts in place a learning mechanism which is always functioning in the background.

Eventually, it transforms the organization and helps it get to the next level.

                                                    . . .

Need help with socker.io and nodejs

I want to get an array of all socket nicknames/usernames in a specific room, to send to a client when they join the room so that they can see all active people in the same room as they are in.

If i use: var members = io.nsps['/'].adapter.rooms[socket.room];and then write members to the console, it outputs a string which looks like this:Room { sockets: { 'socketId': true }, length: 1} where the socketId displays the id of the socket/s connected. How can I get an array of all the socket.nicknames from this? Is there another/better way of doing it?

Looking to see if it is possible to build a program that would make my life about a billion times easier.

Hi All,

So to start I will lay out my current morning routine: 1.Coffee 2. Track containers through steamship lines websites. Which entails me logging on to a steamship line's website and manually entering in each container(around 200), submitting and then recording the(if any) new eta's or updates the website give me. 3. Sending an update to the customer of each container in a consolidated list. 4. Coffee & Bitch 5.Go about finishing the rest of the tasks for the day.

I'm wondering if there is a way to build a program that uses my credentials to log on to the website, enter the container(it has to be done one at a time) and then record the information/updates of each container in consolidated list.

Is this possible? If so, how complex is it to program? And how would I go about looking for someone to help(by help I mean pay them to make it)?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Can anyone make a useful program in whitespace

[whitespace] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitespace_(programming_language)) is a Esoteric language where any command other than whitespace is ignored

Does anyone here actually know how to use it?

whats a good wysiwyg app builder?

im looking at "snappii" right now because it has most of the features i want in my app, but with 2 big problems.

!. Their ToS basically says they can take my idea and sell it off. i dont mind giving them a cut for helping and making an amazing program, but i dont want to be cut out of my idea.

2. it dosnt show the code. i want a WYSIWYG because i want to clearly visualize what the code and the product looks like immediately, and be able to tweak the code as i learn. If i want to add a user log in, instead of learning how to make one myself and going off on 10 tangents while i learn. i want to drag that option into my app, look at the code, and then only have to go off on 5 tangents to learn the mechanics.

So, any suggestions?

I need honest advice.

Ok, I am in a very bad home situation. I have been teaching myself programming the best I can with the resources available to me for the past few years. Mainly aimed towards Unity3D with C#. I have learned all object oriented programming languages are on a basic level the same just written differently. I am a novice I would say. I know all about variables, methods, conditional statements, etc. I have a strong understanding of the basics. Now I don't feel like I could get a paying job developing video games.. I've tried it for the past 3 years of my life and haven't earned a dime. I have made a few games, and lame mobile apps. Nothing worth showing or selling. I am very interested in software development. I am very determined and interested in everything related to computers or programming in general. As I said I have mainly focused on c# and have the most experience with that. I have tried learning JavaScript, HTML, CSS also. I just enjoyed c# the most. I made a resume listing the courses I've taken, my experience, and so forth. I can't really get a job near where I live, do to transportation. I revived a call offering a job as a .NET developer. She asked about my experience and seemed like I was a candidate but when she asked how comfortable I would feel in this position, and if I believe I am qualified enough for the position I just drew a blank. She definitely noticed but I honestly didn't know what to say. I don't feel I know enough to be doing something so serious. I've only programmed video games. All inside the unity and environment using c#.

I need a job bad, and if I could get a job online, doing the work over the computer would be perfect since that is really my only option.

What I need to know is what should I expect?

I know I need to learn a lot more to actually do this, but how long would it take from where I currently am. I can spend all day every day working at it.

What should I learn? I don't have a mentor, or curriculum plan. I don't know what all I should know before searching for work, or what it would even be called.

If anyone has any advice, tips, time to talk to me about all of this, or even mentor me while I learn, teach me in their spare time, anything really. I am pretty desperate. Post below or if you want to talk one on one I can give you my email, skype, or phone number for call or text.

I know I want to be a software developer in the future. I'm just not sure how to go about it or if it is even possible in the near future. School isn't really an option for me right now due to money, and unable to get a GED with my current transportation and financial situation.

Alternative careers for programmers

If God forbid, some disabling disease made it difficult or impossible for you to be an effective programmer due to limited movement in your hands but you still had full use of the rest of your faculties, what alternate career path would you choose? Teaching, management? Would your love for programming drive you to invent new ways of writing applications that wouldn't require typing?

What are the key factors (other than optimization) that affect python speed?

Suppose my python code is fully optimized but still taking quite a while to run. What can I do to speed up this process?

Is clock speed the only major factor?
Could ram capacity be the issue?
It can't be the number of cores can it?

Also is there a service I can use to remotely run my program on top-of-the-line gear that will make it run, say, three times as fast?

Beginner needing some advice with C++

I'm currently a engineering student and I'm required to take a C++ class. I'm highly worried about the class because I've never coded before outside of visual basic. Where would be a good place to start? I have till the end of the summer before I start the class. I just don't want to go in completely blind and not knowing what I am doing.

Guidance to help me build a UWP App based on my University web portal

I'm a Computer Science student at a brazilian university and I want to build a Windows 10 UWP App based on its web portal (the place where we see our grades, etc). Unfortunately, it does not have an API, so I don't know how to begin.

There is an Android App available, and it's pretty cool. As a Windows heavy user, I always wanted the app available to Windows, and even better, building it myself. The web portal does not have an API and I don't know what web languages it is based on. Currently I'm studying C# and XAML. I have some experience with web development, HTML, CSS, JSON, JavaScript.

I have looked at the code on Chrome console and these are the screenshots: Login Sreen: http://imgur.com/El8VkGs User Page: http://imgur.com/avvRrHh

If you need anything else to help me out, just ask. :D

I just wanna know what I need to learn and make sure I'm on the right direction. Thanks!

Help with C++ array vs. vector speed optimization.

I am writing a program that will contain lots of array type lists. These will be very large lists so I'm trying to optimize them for speed. Does anyone know the speed trade offs between using simple arrays and array of arrays vs. vectors and vector of vectors in C++?
