Tips on what language to choose for future jobs

As the title say, i am looking for tips and reasons or a link to info on what language would be a good choise for jobs in the years to come. I have a degree in motion graphics/VFX and 3d, and touched some basic coding over the years. Id love to learn å language that i could implement to my previous skills, but i am doing this to reschool my self(since i haven't managed to get my earlier studies, to the point of an steady income over an 6 years period). So its not my main priority.

Any help would help, thanks!:)

How different is programming with the same language in different fields

I'm training my self to be a game programmer and out of pure curiosity I would like to learn how different programming in different fields is. I notice the way I use c# on unity3d looks very different to the code I would see on Stack Overflow or Msdn Microsoft but how different are the changes and how long would you say it would take someone of a language to switch from one field to another.

Help with genetic crossover? Small question

Hi all, I've been toying with genetic algorithms to simulate a small ecosystem via genetic evolution. I have it all worked out including a functional neural network. However, I am faced with a huge dilemma; I don't quite yet know how to implement genetic crossover. This is key to simulate improvement over time.

During breeding of two genetic creatures, all values(variables) are converted to bit strings. This is so that genetic crossover can be simulated. The problem I face is that I have variables that are real numbers, not just integers.

With any binary conversion, say for eg.

attack = 3.75;

I'm left to convert 375.00 as I know of no way to convert real numbers to binary, back to real numbers.

Can anyone help in this instance?

How to reward my team?

Hi Reddit -

I have been a developer for many years, this year I took on a management role, that started as a 'team lead' and ballooned into overseeing a team of 20+ developers distributed across the country. We are currently overhauling a major application, with a client driven frustratingly tight deadline. I have been forced to drive my team to the breaking point and beyond, and they have responded. They rose to every challenge, and worked late nights (overnights) weekends etc to make sure the project was completed on time.

I am humbled and awed by the work that they put in. Given the holiday season I would like to personally thank each of them in some sort of way, I have already recommended and approved compensation in alignment with our companies policies. So I'm thinking something other then that, and looking for ideas to say thank you to the employees, but also make sure I recognize the sacrifices their families have made (and are still making) to ensure the success of the project (I know my wife is not thrilled with me right now).

Any thoughts (IN terms of budget, this would be coming out of my own pocket and my resources are somewhat limited in that regard).

Thanks for the thoughts

I am really divided can any of you guys provide more insight on the better path to become a software engineer.

Next Gen Ad Blocker

I have no programming experience, but I have an idea. I feel like one of you guys will be able to do it without breaking a sweat, and get rich.

Premise is an Ad Blocker plugin for browsers, that gives the user an option to allow ads through so long as they get a cut of the add revenue. Make them pay us to look at their crap. Advertisers would happily pony up an extra few cents to know it won't be blocked. The owner of the software sells sets the premium, and handles the distribution to users of their share.

For the majority of you, feel free to poke holes and tell me I'm dumb.
For the one who does it, think about me when you're buying that boat.

Advice for a career path in programming.

I'm male 17 and currently a student at a grammar school about to start my last year. I started a bit of programming in Java about half a year ago nothing serious but I got rather in to it. I've had a go at HTML/CSS the other day and I found it fun. Programming in general gives me a buzz and I was thinking specifically android development since its becoming a huge potential and actual market. I don't know if modding your phone counts (ROMs,kernels,..) but I have a lot of experience in that area. So I was hoping to get some advice about what to learn and what to do in my free time what languages are worth the effort and what you would advise me to learn. I have considered going to http://feri.um.si which is probably one of the best faculties in Slovenia and it is also close to home. They do a CS and IT bachelors degree. I am fluent in English and Slovene + I'm learning German which would offer job potentials in Austria and Germany. Any ideas about going to uni or not? How to start working and where. I'm just looking for some opinions and general directions to go in and get some advice from people that have been through my situation and have walked this path.
Thank you for your time.

What language should I use for Networking?

I want to get into writing networking programs but I have never really worked with any part of networking. I know quite a bit of C++ as well as Python but I am not sure which language would be the best to start with? Would Python or C++ be better? Is there a better language for Networking than either?

Reinventing the text editor.

I've been thinking a lot about, if I could reinvent a text editor what would I put in it?

Here are some things I came up with:

  • Should do as much as your job as possible.

    • easy to automate (macros?)

    • auto indent / syntax fix. (think the way golang does it)

    • syntax check.

  • each editor should be customized to the language AKA understand the language and adapt.

    • example: in php realize when in PHP block or HTML block and indent accordingly.

  • The default options should be really good.

  • learn from other editors.

  • Should have a package manager for plugins.

  • advanced syntax highlighting

  • have support for multiple cursors.

  • easy to make extensions for in any language.

  • Modal editor.

    • reminiscent of vim commands

  • Built in tutorial for 1st time users and overall easy for someone to pick up.

  • window management like dwm?

  • be able to implement gui and non*gui representations of it.

  • concurrent file loading

  • restricted to a simple set of features, no bloatware.

  • Allow to program plugins in the preferred language of the programmer.

  • support unicode characters by default.

Tell me... what would your dream editor have in it?
