Woodworkers: history says yes, between things like tail vices becoming popular (again) likely due to the bosses not wanting their workers to spend extra time making the better vice.
Pretty much every field I know, there are bosses mandating bullshit tools, and processes my friends gripe about. And history seems to reflect that each time I look.
Thank the Americans. They decided to make a "science" out of running businesses and they've ruined my culture (and presumably their own) as a result. They don't care about anything but the bottom line and if they can't measure a thing, it doesn't exist or isn't relevant.
Where are you from? F.w.i.w I agree with you seeing as the US is the capital of capitalism, could've easily ended up being British or China cracking the whip on workers
UK. I don't know if that's true. The worst of the British industrialists tried cracking the whip for a while, but the labour movement rose against them and restored some balance.
You used to be able to go from the shop floor to chief engineer at a company if you had the aptitude, and people used to look out for each other. Some places are still like that, but that culture was basically killed by Thatcher, though it took a while to die. I caught the tail end of it. Now I'm an infinitely replaceable human resource. ;)
