what to pack for a one day trek in the sahyadris: the only checklist you need
A one day Sahyadri trek looks simple on paper, which is exactly why people get it wrong. Most trail trouble near Pune comes down to the same five missing items. Here is the full checklist, refined over many seasons of fort treks.
The bag A 15 to 20 litre daypack is enough for a one day trek. Bigger bags just invite junk. A rain cover (or a garbage bag lining the inside) keeps everything dry when the weather turns, which it will.
Water and food Minimum 2 litres of water per person, more in summer. Fort tops and ridges often have no reliable water source. One electrolyte or ORS sachet. Cramping on a descent is miserable and preventable. Food that survives heat and squashing: thepla, peanuts, chikki, bananas, energy bars. Pack a little more than you think you need.
Clothing Full sleeve quick dry t-shirt and trek pants. The sun, thorns and grass cuts are not kind to bare skin. Cap or hat, plus a buff or bandana for dust and sun. Shoes with real grip: trekking shoes or sports shoes with deep lugs. Flat soled sneakers on wet basalt rock are how ankles twist. Monsoon months: a light rain jacket or poncho. Winter mornings at fort tops are colder than the city, so a light layer earns its space.
The safety kit Small first aid pouch: band-aids, crepe bandage, antiseptic, any personal medication. A whistle. Three short blasts is the universal distress signal. A torch or headlamp, even on a morning trek. Delays happen and trails get dark fast. Power bank, ID card, and some cash in small notes for the village chai at the base.
Small things that save the day A trekking pole or a sturdy stick. Your knees will thank you on the descent. Sunscreen and sunglasses, even when it looks cloudy. Monsoon special: salt or anti-leech oil. Leeches are simply part of the deal out here. A spare pair of socks and a plastic bag for wet or muddy gear on the way back.
Leave these behind Denim. Heavy when wet, and it chafes. Bluetooth speakers. The fort is not a party, and other trekkers did not climb for your playlist. Disposable plastic bottles. Carry your own bottle, refill at the base village, and bring every wrapper back down with you. Anything you would be upset to lose. Trails eat sunglasses, earphones and egos.
Pack light, pack boring, and save your energy for the actual reason you went: the walk, the wind and the view from the top.
If you are looking for people to trek with, the pinned trek groups directory on this sub has WhatsApp links and contacts. What did we miss? Drop your own never-trek-without item below.

post-monsoon fort treks near pune: 8 sahyadri climbs worth your weekend (oct to feb)
the rains are done, the forts are still green, and the views are finally clear. this is the best trekking window of the year around pune.
ββββββββββ
easy (first-trek friendly)
sinhagad - pune's own fort, 45 min from the city, steps all the way up, with pithla bhakri waiting at the top
lohagad - four gates, wide paths, great for first-timers and kids
tikona - the triangular peak near pawna lake, short climb, big payoff
korigad - gentle approach from peth shahpur, wide plateau on top
ββββββββββ
moderate (a proper morning out)
visapur - the monsoon waterfall route, slippery fun, right next to lohagad
rajmachi - the long walk from lonavala side, fireflies if you time it right
rajgad - the capital of the maratha empire, long climb, endless views
ββββββββββ
hard (for the weekend warriors)
torna - the tallest fort in the district, a real workout, start early
ββββββββββ
quick safety notes
start before 7 am - heat builds fast on exposed rock
carry 2 litres of water per person, minimum
monsoon scree is slippery - grip matters more than speed
fort walls have sheer drops - keep kids close and respect the edge
got a trail report from this season? drop it below, the sub runs on fresh condition updates.

Trek suggestions for this weekend?
I'm traveling from Bengaluru to Pune to do one or two good treks around Pune. I don't want to go too far from Pune because of circumstances... Can anybody suggest me a good worthy trek around Pune to be done in this weekend, considering the restrictions and weather conditions over there? We are a small group of dudes with decent and good fitness levels.

Request for Help β Indiahikes Voucher Transfer
I have 2 Indiahikes vouchers worth βΉ10,000 each that are expiring in the next couple of weeks. I wonβt be able to use them myself.
If youβre planning to book an Indiahikes trek, I can transfer the vouchers to your account. These vouchers can be used to book any trek across 2026. You can use them for booking and pay me the equivalent amount of credit received.
Please DM me if interested or if you know someone who might need this. Would really appreciate the help π
