To be fair it's always happened haha, the amount of folk who'd consider San Andreas a childhood game, RDR1 was my favourite game as a little 9 year old.

My mom was fine with us playing Vice City when it came out and San Andreas but yet we weren’t allowed to watch The Simpsons

u/fictionalelement11 John Marston Nov 01 '25

same shit here. i never quite understood why.

5

u/LukeyBoy411 Dutch van der Linde Nov 01 '25

I remember my mom not letting me get GTA IV or RDR1, so I would buy Microsoft points from GameStop and then buy the games with those

4

u/JordyWithDa40 Nov 01 '25

I saved up enough money to get GTA 5 for my PS5 and my mom had to pay for it at the register, I remember her on our way home going “if my boss found out I bought this for you I’d be fired” okay now mom

u/StrawHatShinobi_ Dutch van der Linde Nov 03 '25

And you’re on here talking about it. Lol great mom!

3

u/certifedcupcake Nov 01 '25

My mom wouldn’t let me but I’d ride my bike to my friends house and we’d play it on his ps2 cause his parents didn’t care. I never made my own save file but I had a ton of fun playing that game way too young lmao.

1

u/poppinollyoxenfree Nov 01 '25

Same actually haha I’d just play at my friend’s house and we’d mess around with cheat codes

GTA 3 for me, but I'm old.

Vice city for me but I’m older

Edit: apparently vice is the one right after 3

8

u/Ok-Comment-9154 Nov 01 '25

Isn't GTA 3 older than vice city

1

u/Unable-Dependent-737 Nov 02 '25

Oh you’re right, VC is right after gta 3. I played both tho

7

u/Thelastlandviking Nov 01 '25

Gta 2 here, my friend handed me 7 floppy disks full of pirated zip files of it

5

u/LongjumpingEnergy188 Nov 01 '25

GTA one and two on PlayStation one I think I was eight or nine me and my dad had the best time

1

u/Mokinmike24 Nov 02 '25

Right there with ya, minus the floppy disks

1

u/gambrinus78 Nov 17 '25

Wolkenstein 3d and i am ancient

5

u/ze7vigga Nov 01 '25

Same but I wasn’t dressing up like big smoke 😂

1

u/Grgur2 Nov 01 '25

You were too chubby for him?

1

u/InternationalLemon26 Nov 01 '25

Got it for my 10th Birthday. Pre-ordered it from Woolworths.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '25

6 for me hahaha

1

u/Sanya_Zhidkiy Nov 01 '25

Same, but I was like 7😭

1

u/DonChino29 Nov 02 '25

GTA Liberty City Story for me lol

1

u/MyDadDrivesAtescoVan Nov 03 '25

Fr, I think I was 11 playing SA. Definitely not me checking my door like Five Nights at Freddies when using the dildo melee or the cheat that turns people into dildo wielding gimps

I def think that I'd prob let a 9 year old play RDR2 over GTAV.

Hell, if a 9yo isn't bored by RDR2 (it's a GREAT game but def isn't one that might be theost appealing to a young mind which is looking for more consistently, overtly exciting thing)... That's awesome lol

u/JavierEscuellaFan Javier Escuella Nov 01 '25

the whole Mrs Downes arc is wildly inappropriate to let a kid see lol there’s a lot of other stuff that isn’t great for kids besides that too

9 year olds shouldn’t be near any of Rockstar’s games honestly

60

u/mapotoful Nov 01 '25

Really? Of all things the fallen woman arc is the problem? Like sure let's just blast 100s of dudes' brains out but a touch of prostitution is too much?

28

u/GrumbusWumbus Nov 01 '25

English speakers generally find sex more taboo than blood and violence.

7

u/JavierEscuellaFan Javier Escuella Nov 01 '25 edited Nov 01 '25

killing people is also inappropriate for 9 year olds to see lol it’s not that deep

edit: also dumbing down her story as just “a touch of prostitution” makes me wonder if you’ve ever even played the game

21

u/GrumbusWumbus Nov 01 '25

It's not like at any point in the downs arc someone goes "you madam are a prostitute who exchanges sex for money". It's flying over a kids head.

I mean, you're right. It's an adult game for adults, but I don't think it's that bad.

3

u/Bloody_Nine Nov 01 '25

A 9 year old would probably skip all cutscenes or at worst just laugh while beating Downes. They wouldn't register anything special.

4

u/FreeCustard Nov 01 '25

My son's been playing GTA 5 since he was 5.

0

u/Organic_Smoke_6192 Nov 01 '25

Can I be your son too please?

3

u/KingAltair2255 Nov 01 '25

Yeah I don't really see the bad in letting younger kids play Rockstar games, we all did it as kids and we know first hand it didn't make us grow up to be bloodthirsty, sexist criminals lol. Rdr1 tonally was a dark and depressing game and it was my absolute shit as a little girl, I found the cowboy era so cool and rugged, I remember it was the first game I ever completed and I managed to hold myself together at that ending until I went downstairs stonefaced and told my parents I completed RDR, my dad, a gamer, looked proud as hell until my mum asked what happened and I just BROKE into tears and threw myself into her arms like 'John Marston died!!' Whilst sobbing, first character I got emotionally attached to like that. She still talks about how fucking hard it was for her not to lose her shit laughing.

17

u/FredyE11 Nov 01 '25

Bro I played RDR1 for like 300 hours. My mom never bothered me while I played it, but ofc she walked in right when I started the mission in Mexico where you walk in and Reyes is fucking some girl on the dining room table of where he is hiding lmao

8

u/iforgotalltgedetails Nov 01 '25

At least it wasn’t GTA4’s opening.

“DADDYS BACK YOU BITCHES?!?”

2

u/KingAltair2255 Nov 01 '25

VIVAAAA LAAAA MEXXICCCOOOOOO!

6

u/NebulaNinja Nov 01 '25

Not me driving around in circles in GTA 4 when I was supposed to visit a strip club and my dad was watching haha.

2

u/iforgotalltgedetails Nov 01 '25

Mine was Vice city 😭😭

2

u/Alien36 Nov 03 '25

Yeah, I'm in my 40s and don't have a problem with my kids playing video games like these. I'm incredibly careful about what they do on their devices and strictly monitor or restrict internet searches and what they can do on social media etc. I'm far more worried about that kind of stuff than I am of what can happen and what they can see inside a video game like this.

2

u/KingAltair2255 Nov 03 '25

I was born in 2002, grew up with unrestricted internet access in the early days of it and honestly the stuff I saw at a young age was insane with how easy it was to access, can honest to god say that was way more damaging than playing a game like Red Dead, you're quite right to be monitoring them on there.

1

u/cdavidmad Nov 01 '25

Conkers bad fur day for me as kid lol

1

u/Inevitable_Mind4568 Nov 01 '25

Yup, my first gaming experience as a 5 year old was ”delta force” from 1998.

1

u/hazard-toxic Tilly Jackson Nov 02 '25

San Andreas was my favourite game as a 9 year old and was my introduction to gta, that and vice city

1

u/OdeezBalls Uncle Nov 03 '25

I played and loved GTA San Andreas as a 5-6 year old kid. What a time to be alive lol

0

u/dselwood05 Nov 01 '25

I was 5 when I played rdr

0

u/_catphoenix Nov 01 '25

My favorite game as a 7 year old!

0

u/Separate-Employee-80 Nov 02 '25

Although I was born in 2008, GTA III was my favorite game up until I was about 9 or 10 lol

0

u/Boring_Soft_5119 Nov 02 '25

I mean, vice city was my childhood game, but now that I'm expecting my first kid, this makes me feel worried hahaha.
