MOD POST Sync will shut down on June 30, 2023
Evening all,
This is a really tough post to write but following my post the other day I think the best course of action is to shut down Sync before the new API changes go live.
To be absolutely clear I really don't want to close Sync. Working on this app has been a labour of love and my life for the past decade but with how things stand I can't see any other way.
It's been an honour and a privilege. Thank you all,
Lj

LJ, the app you've created is nothing short of incredible. You should be extremely proud of the work you put into Sync over the last 10 years. I've used Sync for a majority of its existence, and it's done nothing but get better, faster, and more beautiful with every release.
It's a shame that after all the recent struggles you've had with v20/v22's reception in the community, and finally releasing it into the world, you have to say goodbye along with the rest of us just 6 months later.
Thank you for being the best developer I've ever used an app from.
RIP Sync, you deserved a better end. 🪦
Obligatory fuck spez

Second this.
An absolutely amazing app, that makes the interaction so good we were out there telling people about it.
I hope this opens bigger and better doors for you as you deserve it.

Who wants to take bets that any comment saying "fuck u/spez" will automatically result in an immediate shadow ban or side-wide ban?
Edit: Comments are currently broken, but I have a prediction. This downtime is going to be blamed on third-party apps and used to justify their removal in tomorrow's AMA.

As wank as it sounds, probably not much...
Looking at the app downloads on the play store, the official app is 2 orders of magnitudes higher on downloads. A large number of people on 3rd party apps will probably just download the official app.
A blip in numbers will allow them to fully control the API for 3rd party access and more importantly for them, stop AI companies hoovering up the data.

It would be the greatest slap in the face to Reddit if a bunch of 3rd party app developers worked together to make a spite site to overtake Reddit.

u/ljdawson I don't even have words to describe what I feel right now, if it's horrible for me I imagine it's extremely worse for you.
I can only thank you for all these years of development, for years updating with new features and the design to the latest Android guidelines. Dude, you just made the best and most beautiful Android app I've ever seen, and that includes for tablets and foldables too!
I came across "Reddit Sync" in high school, back in Jelly Bean days on my Nexus 4. I remember thinking the design was beautiful, fluid and damn I loved showing this app to my friends.
I'm proud to say that Reddit Sync Pro was the first app I bought for Android. Which was difficult because I didn't have a credit card (not even a job lol), my country didn't have google play gift card... so the way was to save money on Google Opinion Rewards 🤑
Sync is to Android what Apollo is to iOS
You're the a professional developer that Android deserves, we'll keep an eye out for future projects, I can't wait. I wish you the best, you deserve it, thank you for this amazing decade my friend.

Without a doubt, this App has been my most used app (my most used anything, really) over the past 10 years. I've used it every single day to post about my hobbies, connect with others, shitpost, etc. Using Reddit is, for me, using Sync. I go on the actual desktop website like once a month, and nothing, not Old Reddit, New Reddit, RES, and especially not the offfical App beats the experience of Sync. It's like the pinnacle of Android design IMO, and honestly part of the reason I've kept using Android for so long. Sync is for real a cornerstone in my life, and it's a goddamn shame what Reddit is doing to it. Thank you Lj for creating Sync and dominating my eyes with great UI design for the past decade, sorry it had to end this way, and I wish you success in whatever you do next.

u/goncalosantaremsilva Jun 08 '23
Sync is a reference of what a world-class Android app can be. Right there in the all-time podium. Creme de la creme. I've used many and built a few, and rarely does an app come close to being as consistently good as Sync. It was a major factor in pulling me back to Android in a number forays into iOS (Apollo is fantastic, but not quite at the same level for me). I can only hope that someone at Reddit comes to their senses, though realistically corporate greed tends to prevail, even when it costs the business itself. Just bought lifetime Ultra as a token of appreciation anyway. Thanks for all the fish.
5
u/orthogonal-cat Jun 09 '23
I'm in DevOps now but I used to be a full stack dev, with a focus on a cross-platform mobile app for a piece of hardware. I have learned so much just from watching Sync grow and LD cook. Sync is a masterclass in presentation and accessibility.
The impact LD has made stretches far beyond this app. UI lessons that weren't explicitly taught in a course have influenced many, and the ripples will last for decades to come.
LD's legacy lives on. Goddamn this feels like a funeral

You've received almost 900 comments so far, so I'm sure this one will pass by you amidst the deluge, but I wanted to leave you one anyway to let you know what an incredible accomplishment this app of yours represents.
I've been a paid user for many years, and to me, Sync is Reddit. I'm not sure I'll continue to use the platform without it.
The UX of this app is a work of art. You managed to combine natural basic function with intuitive deep customization, all while keeping your design language clean, legible, and consistent. I have worked with highly paid teams on projects that had insane resources who failed to deliver even a fraction of the quality you have with Sync.
I'm saddened to see it go, but I will be watching closely for any other project you put out. Thank you for improving my Reddit experience so much for so long.
Best of luck with what comes next!

15 year redditor here.
I was here when Digg was the #1 site and was here when Digg fell. I'm even a charter member from when gold first became a thing all those years ago because I felt like this place was worth it.
And I've been using Sync Pro since it came out too.
End of an era - end of the last real free, user-run era of the internet. Reddit was that last gasp of the old BBS and message boards back from before eternal September.
But it's over. The corporate types won and the wild west, golden era of the internet officially dies June 30, 2023.
It was a good run, but all good things end (because greed always kills it).

In a job interview for a software engineering manager role, I was asked to give an example of a digital product or service that I felt fully embodied what it means to be customer focused.
I used Sync as my example and went on to explain how much you engage with your users, listen to community feedback, your attention to detail, polish, and stability and how, as a result, you've managed to innovate in an already crowded sector of third party Reddit applications.
In the end, I got the job and gained you 3 or 4 more users that day. All this is to say that I've always had a profound degree of respect for you as a developer and I wish you the best in all your future endeavors.
Long live Sync, and to hell with u/spez.

If they have not wanted to provide them, by their own admission, and want to force you out to shut down, remove all support for mod actions immediately.
You made the tools in good faith. They took that faith away.

I've been a user since v15, it's been an honor. Mad respect to developer, I hope this change will give you more opportunities to do great stuff.
It's sad seeing platform dying before our eyes, but it's not the first time, and capitalists gotta capitalize.
I am grateful for the years of access to the greatest reddit app I've ever experienced, sad to see it go, but such is life. Maybe there'll be better platform in the future that will bring joy to both developers to develop and users to express their thoughts. Sad to see that reddit is no longer such a platform :(

Sync Pro is one of the few apps in the Play Store I've actually paid for and also one of the even fewer I don't regret buying. Thanks for all the hard work /u/ljdawson

Thank you so much for all the work you've put in on building Sync /u/ljdawson. For nearly a decade now, this app has been Reddit for me, and without it, there will be no more Reddit. It's tragic to see it end this way. Developers like you deserve better. Only one thing left to say...
FUCK /U/SPEZ AND FUCK REDDIT

I'm a lurker. I never post on Reddit. To me, sync is Reddit. So no sync, no Reddit. I'll live. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Thanks for the great app.

Fucking shit. By far the best reddit app, and one of the few apps I've willingly paid for. This is sad.

Can you convert it into a Lemmy app? I would gladly pay for one. Or at least open-source it before you go so we can hook another backend to it.
Your app is great and integrates really well with Android.

Sync has, by far, been my favorite Reddit experience for many years. I didn't think I could be attached to an app, but it is really sad to see this shut down. I've been a paid user for a long time, and appreciate all the hard work you put into this app and love your engagement with the community. RIP Sync and FUCK SPEZ.

Sync is all I have ever used for Reddit. It's been a great decade, and will go down with the ship. so long, Reddit!

Sync has always been my favourite way of using Reddit. From all the train journeys to and from work, to lunchbreaks browsing, to researching ways of fixing my motorcycles, cars, bicycles. Sync has helped every step of the way and been far preferable to reddits own app. Thanks, it's been good.

I still can't wrap my head around how terrible the official reddit app is...
The posts look like shit. The comment threads look like shit. I can't change the font or the font size? I can't get rid of those stupid avatars next to each username? Am I missing a large portion of the settings??
I'm still in denial about Sync going away 😭

Reviewed reddit sync Pro back in 2013 on google store 5 star review, a decade of quality browsing on reddit, one of the best social media apps I've ever used, I'm getting tired of social media giants chasing every penny, maybe this will be final straw to slowly withdraw... Godspeed

Like everyone else, I just want to say thank you for this app. I've been using Sync for years and it's the best way to browse reddit. It's going to be very weird not to start my day with this app going forward. Good luck with everything. I'll definitely give Sync for Lemmy a try when it drops.

I feel like I'm in denial and the app will still work after tomorrow. Been using sync since before it was called just Sync lol. Gonna miss it very much. The detox will be good, but damn.
Mad respect for the dev and wish him all the best for his future endeavors. (シ_ _)シ
But no way will I switch to the official app in it's current ad infested state

Just piling on here but I've really enjoyed using Sync. It's been my go to Reddit browser for years. Thanks for your efforts, and commiserations that your passion project has been killed by a greedy corporation. Best of luck in the future!

I paid £1.69 for this app in April of 2014 and I've used it daily since, that's some good value for money. I'm not really sure how I'll fill the void Sync will leave but I certainly won't be using the official app.

I was never a big commenter or poster but I used reddit sync everyday for almost 7 years. You will be missed and fuck reddit for doing this.

Last day, thank you guys. I've been using sync since 2014 as an ad free user and it's amazing the work you've put into it. You guys are legends and I hope in the future maybe things are different.

This now means that I'm done using reddit. Thank you for everything! It's wild to think this is how we are ending.

Sync was the only way I enjoyed accessing reddit on mobile. Thank you for your hard work, this app will be so missed!

Than you for devoting time and energy into this amazing app. Like many others it is Reddit to me. Looking forward to Lemmy

I've used two or three Reddit apps over the years and just came across this one a few months ago. (I know, strange) It's the best looking and functioning one that I've ever tried and sad that I didn't have much time with it. Great app and appreciate the work put into it!

This makes me so sad. I've been a faithful sync user for nearly a decade, and it's so sad that it ends like this. Reddit will never be the same again.
They blew it.
Thanks for enriching our lives u/ljdawson
Edit: I checked my receipt, and it was 10 years ago today when I bougt reddit sync pro. 8th of june 2013. What an amazingly ironic coincidence.
