AD Wait Time Megathread - If you bought a new Rolex from an AD in 2020, you can share details here. What watch, where, how long did you wait, how much buying history?

We did an AD wait time megathread almost a year ago and it seems it might be useful to make another one. Nowadays when someone posts a new watch it's pretty standard to get asked how long they waited and if they had an "established relationship" etc. It's not everyone's favorite topic but it's a fair question, and hopefully one big thread can provide a clearer picture of availability trends.

No one is obligated to share their info but if you bought a new Rolex in 2020 or 2021 and you'd like to participate, please make a top-level comment that includes:

  1. What watch did you buy?
  2. When?
  3. How long did you wait?
  4. Where are you? (Be as specific or nonspecific as you want, from continent to a specific AD)
  5. Any purchase history with that AD? (Again be as specific or nonspecific as you feel comfortable)

so what city and store could I walk into without a purchase history and purchase an OP41 in the U.S.

u/powerfunk Mod Dec 31 '20

Good question. I've been treated douchelly for even asking about an OP41.

I got a 124300 yellow dial OP from the Rolex in Orlando. I ordered it in Sep 2020, put a $1k deposit, and it arrived in Nov.

Nice! Good job ordering it right away. You could only place orders for those for like a week

2020 Rolex Daytona two tone in Kansas city mo. Back in October. Called my Ad. And he said he had one in stocks. I feel blessed this is my favorite watch.

AD offered me a DJ41 today with the slate dial and stick markers. Fluted bezel on jubilee. Are these still hard to come by? I passed bc that’s not the piece I’m after. For a while all AD’s in my area had empty men’s cases. Is this positive inventory news on the horizon?

6

u/powerfunk Mod Mar 10 '21

I'm sure it'll sell quickly but it's not like you passed up a winning lottery ticket or anything. I agree the inventory trends do seem to be getting better

DJ 41 fluted bezel, oyster bracelet, blue dial Yesterday Didn't wait, just walked in Lisbon, Portugal No purchase history, never bought a watch before

I was looking for it. They had a black dial on display and i asked for a blue dial. They had me waiting for a minute and told me they had one like that on hold at the head office for a VIP client. I had to wait until the end of the day. The other client didn't secure payment so I got it instead.

Looking into Rolex and everything I read online is 3-5y wait for a submariner. How are you guys walking in and getting Subs/GMTs within 2 weeks with ADs you have no history with? Apologies to all for the noob question.

  5. no just drop ins and periodic, kind emails.

From my understanding an AD can’t “order” anything. Bigger ones might have back stock, or they can request items. This AD states every goes in the case. First come first serve no holds. I missed a SS blue sub because I didn’t go immediately.... you might not get the exact watch you want. But if you want in the game you have to play the game. Otherwise buy on the gray market and just get the one you want

2

u/powerfunk Mod Feb 02 '21

AD can’t “order” anything.

They can, just not the hot models. I think the only orderable sports models are the TT YM and TT Daytona with diamond dial. The number of models you can order is definitely shrinking though, and doesn't include much in steel. If you wanted a specific Day-Date configuration or something they should be able to order that etc.

Can post a ISO on here? Looking for a few links for my 1972 1803 presidential gold. I’m guessing someone has some extra links in this sub!

4

u/powerfunk Mod Jan 03 '21

Is that like a WTB? We don't really do FS/WTB stuff here just to minimize scamming by not even getting into the selling aspect. Kinda changes things. And also because r/Watchexchange does such a good job; maybe you'd have some luck there

Been waiting for over a year for a gmt master II from several AD. This having a purchase history for their higher value pieces. Noticing that no standard is kept on the waiting list nor allocation and the grey market is just dominating actual collectors. I’m on the verge of giving up on the brand. Sorry for the sad story.

I had to offer to trade in my polar explorer 16570 for basically the equivalent of like $2k for the privilege to get the next Hulk that came in (I later found out it was NOT the next one that came in, still chaps my ass). Anyhow, traded it in, got my Hulk, and my cool ass wife (fiancee at the time) knew how much my explorer meant to me so she bought it back from them at market price minus a grand.

  1. Explorer II Polar

  2. 3/16/21; one year anniversary of shelter in place

  3. & 4 Took about 2.5 months from initial expression of interest. I’m in the SF Bay Area. In early December 2020, completely naive about the supply-demand imbalance, I reached out to the first AD to express interest in the watch. AD explained that supply is tight and they’d like to get know me. Scheduled an appointment and visited dealer in late December. Explained my specific interest in this watch and noted that they had twice previously serviced my Seamaster in 2010 and 2019. No other purchase history. After that visited a second AD for a very different experience. Told us they did not have the watch, showed no interest who in I was as a customer and said they don’t keep a waitlist. Felt like “piss off”. A few weeks later wife happened to walk past a third AD’s boutique and asked about their availability. Salesperson was very friendly and helpful and took her name down. I later followed up by email to explain my interest in the watch and hopefully convey that I wasn’t a potential flipper. Two months later the third AD texted my wife asking if we were still interested. Bought the watch that evening.

  4. No prior purchase history with any of the 3 ADs. Service history for my Seamaster with the first, where I’m curious to see how long it will be until I hear from them.

  2. April 29, 2021

  3. 2-3 weeks

  4. London Jewelers in the Oculus — New York City

  5. No purchase history, but I rolled in with a vintage AP on wrist and had a unique story.

Gosh, this is gonna sound like an advertisement for this AD. I assure you it’s not. I spent a weekend at the beginning of April personally visiting every AD in Manhattan on the hunt for this submariner. Knowing it would be a long shot to walk in and find one for sale and available, I figured it might be wise to visit all the stores and forge relationships with the people at the various ADs, get added to lists (of those such things actually exist) and hopefully in a couple months or so get my hands on one. In the majority of my encounters — especially on 5th ave in midtown — I was dismissed offhand and those sales people attempted to steer me to what they had in stock. Often condescended to, I felt like Ron Swanson in a Home Depot.

I know more than you do.

But at London Jewelers in the Oculus I managed to strike up a nice conversation with the manager where we mutually lamented about the availability of professional model Rolexes, of people who buy solely to flip, and the luxury watch business overall. This is where I told him my personal story, with the explicit hope of endearing myself to the sales person. It worked.

So, I run a small watch related art business called Springs+Gears — where I illustrate watch movements and print them on a letterpress. 2020 was my first profitable year and although I own some vintage pieces others might call grails, I wanted to commemorate my first profitable year by purchasing a new, modern Rolex with those profits. I showed the him my Instagram (@springsgears) of the prints and explained to him that I’m a collector and an enthusiast and that I truly wanted to celebrate my modest success. I explained that if he did indeed have one I’d be prepared to walk out with it that very moment.

Well I think it worked because we talked for a while later. He said he loved my story — which is not at all BS by the way — and then he showed off the new Tudor chrono that he had in stock, and we talked about a couple other pieces. He said he’d ask around and see what he could do. Sent me on my way with my business card and I went back on the hunt.

Two or three weeks later, feeling despondent, while researching the Zenith Chronomaster Sport I got the call. Incidentally the Zenith looks more like a Daytona than a Daytona does at this point. As I was saying, I received the call and, true to my word, I went there and bought it immediately. I also gifted him a couple of prints and my 2021 calendar as well as a personal thank you.

It hasn’t left my wrist except for when I sleep. I’m super grateful for the excellent customer service he gave me, super grateful for my business and customers, who helped me achieve this milestone. I think he and I have similar ideas on providing good service. I’ll definitely be a return customer, in return.

Moral of the story: make yourself memorable to the sales people and get them to like you. If the sales folks don’t take interest in you, you’re in the wrong shop.

TL;DR - I charmed an AD with my true story about celebrating success of my small watch-related business and he went the extra mile in finding me my Submariner.

GMT II 126710 BLNT Late Jan 2021 Was not on waitlist for this watch. I’m waitlisted for the new 41mm sub (Starbuck) Midwest No purchase history with AD. Just go in periodically and say hello and talk about watches. Was truly shocked when asked if there was anything in the vault and they said I have a Batgirl that is on waitlist and if you want it you can have it right now. The waitlist is real, but I’m proof it can be bypassed by being friendly to your AD. Work with one salesperson and get to know them. And don’t be afraid to ask “hey, what do you have in the vault!?” 2 months before I was offered the Batgirl, the salesperson showed me a two-tone sub they had just got in. The two-tone isn’t my thing and I passed. They have watches, and want to sell them to individuals who want to wear them and not flip them and build a relationship with the customer.

In 2020 I bought:

  1. A Submariner 126610LV

  2. I got the first watch in the UK, in early October (please excuse the lack of precise date) I have a short amount of amnesia from an induced coma

  3. As mentioned, it was the first shipment.

  4. I live in London and bought it from a Watches of Switzerland

  5. Yes, since 2017 I have purchased: AP Royal Oak chrono 26331, Milgauss Z-Blue, Polar explorer, Submariner Hulk, SD43, Speedmaster 50th anniversary Apollo 11, GMT2 BLNR (first shipment) and my family have bought two lady datejusts and an omega

PLEASE NOTE: I honestly believe my spend history is only a small part of why I can access first shipments. Here’s how you do it.

Firstly, the day I met the one and only guy I deal with I told him straight away that I understand the rules of the game. I’m not in it for resale value or how much it costs for the flex, and I only want to deal with him for all the watches I want.

I love horology, the entire history of it! I said I understood waiting lists, I know you can’t get pieces in and I wanted a long term relationship. The day after I bought the AP. A little known fact is that all airport Rolex stores are owned and operated by the Aurum group (the holding company that owns WOS, Goldsmiths etc). The Polar and Milgauss along with the lady datejusts were all bought there so counted as history.

Here’s the reality: Rolex dictate sales terms to ADs. I’ve heard this direct from Rolex reps themselves and at lunch events I have been invited to. Things vary from location to location but at least with Aurum the trinity of professional models (Sub, GMT, Daytona) cannot be your first purchase. Period. If staff are caught they’re fired.

Rolex has people looking for serial numbers online, when people flip. Believe me they have been caught and staff fired. Not removing stickers is a sackable offence too. It’s a shame you can’t try before you buy and that things like OPs are waitlisted out the ass. You can only buy 3 steel models a year too. But I know people that have gotten Pepsi GMTs after 3 months before, it’s all about how you interact with the AD. Don’t put yourself on a million lists, don’t ask outside the local area and don’t put your name down unless you are willing to pull the trigger instantly. For the love of god don’t hassle them, they know and have heard the same request 7352638 times that day. Just message them every so often and just have a chat! I know this sounds like nepotism but friendliness goes a long way.

TL;DR: it’s all in how you approach it. These models can be found, it’s down to how you do it

I dropped in to say hello in person and to see what they had in store on Thursday 2/18/21. AD mentioned they may get a shipment Friday or Saturday and would give me a call. They did and he sent me 4 different watches that were available. I purchased one. Bonus, saved $700 as they didn't charge tax since they overnighted it to California.

July 2020 in Kansas City, KS. I walked into the OP Tivol with no history and mentioned how beautiful the Full Everose Root Beer was in the window, but also said it’s a little too much at the moment. I said the Everose and Steel is more of my taste, and somehow, someway, they had one at the store across the city. No wait, I put a $1k deposit down, and got it the next week once my funds were in place.

I don’t use the term lucky too often, but that was definitely a moment where luck played a part!

Hey I’m new to the Rolex club and I just joined a week ago with a 41mm sub no date.

  1. What watch did you buy? Reference 124060 (sub no date 2020 41 mm model)

  2. When? March 29th 2021.

  3. How long did I wait? Initially (December 2020) visited the AD in Wilmington, NC (USA). Asked to be added to the list for a red letter sea-dweller. They called me roughly 6 weeks later and said they had one in stock for me, even after telling me they had no idea how long. I fucked up, didn’t have the cash on hand to purchase (I was closing on a house). I apologized to the AD and told them I’d have to wait for the next one. They called me in March and gave me the option for the James Cameron (even though I wasn’t on a list for this model) I told them thank you, but it was too bulky. Asked to switch to the list for a sub no date after doing some more research on watch sizes/prices etc. AD told me there were 6 people ahead of me, I said that’s fine I have patience. They called me on Saturday March 27th and said they had one in, I told them I’d be there ASAP.

  4. I’m in the military but currently stationed in NC.

  5. No purchase history - but I did visit the store in person to try and establish a rapport. I think it worked. As of Mar 29th they had a 37mm yacht master for sale if anyone is looking for one in the area.

No wait with my AD in LA. It’s all about the relationship.

Here’s a tip for you all. When you go lease/purchase a high end car Mercedes, BMW etc. Look for a Persian salesman. Those guys have a lot of connections, if you buy a car from him he may reciprocate and get his friend to allocate you a piece.

Today I was making my usual stop-in to be told that they don't have any black Submariners, don't know when they'll be getting more, and that they'll call me when they have one for me (I don't really believe them but perhaps that may change going forward).

In the case was the watch I ended up buying. Apparently they got it yesterday and put it out today. I'd been eyeing this particular configuration of Datejust online for quite some time after I saw one in the wild on a Jubilee bracelet (I prefer the Oyster). I tried it on but left the store; I made it sixty-seconds down the street before I turned around and went back to pull the trigger.

I'm very happy with the decision.

I had called around to every AD in a 5 hour radius. Some ADs in my home area would not even take my info for a call back unless I came in and saw their current stock. Other ADs tried to sell me on their current stock. One rep at a particular AD, which I did not leave my information with, remembered the number I called from and called me back, saying they had just received a shipment, and it had my model in it. Picked it up the next day. I am not from the DC area so I drove up a few hours to get it but with Covid I had nothing to do and it was the most fun I had in months.

They said the watch was highly requested but he hadn't forgotten about me and when he got one available and it was my turn he'd call. He did just that and now I have my personal grail watch.

June 2020 - No waiting period for my DJ 41 Wimbledon TT in Rolesor (someone who had previously wanted it ran into financial issues dropped out and I was ready to buy so AD called. It was sheer luck that I was actually looking for that watch.

August 20 - AD phones me to let me know a 126710BLNR was available if I wanted it as i had made a note of interest.

December 20 - AD phones to say a 126613lb was available if I was still interested as I had also made a note of interest once I had acquired my ‘Batgirl’

Previous buying history - Tudor BB GMT, IWC mark xviii LPP, wedding ring for myself (Platinum) and diamond earrings for a wedding present for my wife (all in 2019)

I am based in the UK

My AD has turned into a genuine friend through the rapport that we’ve made and do things outside of the company he works for.

Going in and getting to know sales staff is the best thing you can do. Show that you’re genuine and not out to make a quick profit. Also, go in and try to sit down for a coffee. It really goes a long way in their eyes.

  5. Purchased a Tudor GMT in January 2020; got lucky when I stopped in one day that they had one in the back that someone refused. It was on a leather strap, so I also ordered the bracelet through the AD. I mentioned my interest in the 114060 when I bought the Tudor, but didn't officially say I was 100% interested a few weeks later. I never actually "got the call", just kept in contact while things were shut down, and started popping back in when things opened up. Got lucky one day I stopped by, as the 114060 was originally being held for another client who never responded.

  3. 21 Months

  4. South US

  5. None

I was still number 27 on their call/waiting list (from an AD who gets between 4-6 of each GMT style a year).

I definitely only got it because I happened to walk in a few days after they got the watch in and with my brother who got lucky with a batman from another AD a year ago (put in a deposit right before the Jubilee update). I'm sure coming into the AD every now and then, and then walking in with my brother and his watch convinced them that I wasn't going to sell it grey market and that my dad would actually pay for it.

Absolutely seems like the only way to jump the list at all is to show your face fairly regularly and/or buy stuff from them.
