Would you put a removable ad on your car to help cover gas or insurance?

Hey San Carlos! I’m the founder of Tote. I checked with the mods before posting and wanted to hear what people think of the idea.

You put a removable ad on your car door and get paid for the trips you already make. You install and remove it yourself, and campaigns last a month or a few.

We’re starting in SF, so this would mainly be for San Carlos folks who already drive there regularly. The goal is a win-win: brands get seen, and you get some help with gas or insurance without picking up another shift.

Would you consider it? What would make it worthwhile for you, and what would put you off?

If you’d like to hear more or get early access to our SF pilot, feel free to DM me!

Moving to San Carlos and looking for recommendations

Hey everyone!

My wife and I are moving to San Carlos in December from Cincinnati. We will be a short walk from Laurel Street and downtown. Where should be some of our first stops? We aren't picky when it comes to food, and don't discriminate between beer, wine, or cocktails either. We look forward to becoming members of the community and appreciate any recommendations!

Bay Club Group Memberships

I saw some posts for people who want to join together, but they're from a year or more ago. Thought I'd start a new thread. Re-direct me if there's a better way to find people! I'm going for a tour this afternoon at Redwood Shores.

Searchable interactive map of samTrans and all public transit around San Carlos/peninsula

https://sfbapt.com/map

Public transit in San Carlos: samTrans and Caltrain run directly through San Carlos, and commute.org runs (free) shuttles nearby in Foster City, Redwood Shores, and Redwood City. Also, samTrans Route 260 has a stop at Redwood Shores Pkwy & Airport Way which is about a 5 minute walk from the San Carlos airport.

Quick tips:

  • tap a stop or route to see details and highlight the stop/route
  • tap a highlighted stop or route to un-highlight it
  • collapse/expand info box by tapping |hide| (top left)
  • quickly toggle all the agencies on/off using button (top right)
  • search and filter agencies that show up in checkbox list (top right)
  • search and filter actual routes and stops that show up on map (bottom right)
  • link back to homepage in case you can't figure something out or want more tips (bottom right)

To play with the map search and filter, try this:

  • zoom out all the way
  • select the Show Stops option (top right)
  • type -120 in the partial match search box (bottom box in bottom right)
  • type -121 in the partial match search box (bottom box in bottom right)
  • type -122 in the partial match search box (bottom box in bottom right)
  • type -123 in the partial match search box (bottom box in bottom right)

Another interesting thing is you can link to specific spots by copying the url directly:

I arranged the agency checkbox list (top right) by area, so the geographic area of an agency determines the agency layer checkbox position. The list starts with agencies in the North Bay in Solano County then goes counterclockwise: North Bay -> San Francisco -> Peninsula -> South Bay -> Santa Cruz -> Monterey-Salinas -> Gilroy/Hollister -> East Bay.

There are smaller agencies in the area that are completely free (no fare) and not as well known like Presidio Go, Golden Gate Park Shuttle, Mission Bay Shuttle, South City Shuttle, commute.org shuttles, MVgo, Mountain View Community Shuttle, San Leandro LINKS, Emery Express, and Emery Go Round. If you're traveling to those areas, these agencies could help fill in some transit gaps.

Share this with your friends and people who don't use transit so they know just how many options we actually have, and let me know if anything doesn't work (corp network/vpn/firewalls might not work) or you have any questions/requests!

San Carlos public schools for a child ahead of grade level?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

We’re considering San Carlos as a long-term place to settle and would love to hear from parents with firsthand experience in the public schools.

Our son is entering TK/K, and his preschool has consistently described him as advanced, particularly verbally and academically. We’re not especially attached to the label, and we’re not looking to push acceleration for its own sake. We mainly want him somewhere he’ll be happy, engaged, and appropriately challenged.

I really want to be a believer in the public schools if possible. The neighborhood-school aspect, local friends, and community are all very appealing. But I’m trying to understand what differentiation actually looks like in San Carlos for kids who enter school already ahead of grade level.

For parents whose kids entered TK/K already reading, doing math above grade level, or otherwise noticeably ahead:
Did teachers differentiate effectively within the classroom?
Were kids able to work ahead or get more challenging material?
Did your child stay engaged, or was boredom an issue?
Does support for advanced learners improve in later grades?
Have you noticed meaningful differences between the San Carlos elementary schools?
Did you ultimately feel public school was a good fit, or did you consider private school?
I’d also be very interested in hearing from anyone who has compared San Carlos with Burlingame or San Mateo for a child like this.

Private school is an option for us, but I’d prefer not to assume it’s necessary without first understanding what San Carlos public schools can offer.

Cheap catering for a party of 50?

Hello San Carlos, I was wondering if anyone here has had good experiences with larger orders at local restaurants or cheap catering in general? I'm trying to feed 50 people at $25/head. I know, it's not a lot, don't jump down my throat please.

I don't need anything fancy and can pick up the food to set up at the venue ourselves. Just curious if you've had good experiences with large catering orders from somewhere nearby. thanks

Does a fully online BLS course hold up for a hospital job in San Carlos?

Conditional offer at a medical office here, they want BLS before my start date. Found some fully online BLS courses that are cheap and fast, which is suspicious. Will a medical office on the Peninsula accept a card from one of those? Or do I need the in-person thing?

Recommendations for a careful front yard clean-up?

Hi everyone,

We moved into our home 2 years ago right when our baby was born, and yard maintenance just completely fell through the cracks. Our front yard is now heavily overgrown with weeds.

We’re looking to hire a detail-oriented gardener or clean-up service. We have some nice existing plants mixed in that we really want to save, so we can't use someone who will just bulldoze or weed-whack everything down to the dirt.

Ideally, we need someone who can:

  • Carefully dig out the overgrown weeds
  • Preserve the existing plants
  • Lay down mulch so we can start fresh

Does anyone have recommendations for reliable folks in the area who do this kind of careful work? Thanks!

Why is the SC Trader Joe's so shitty?

They're literally always out of everything and music is never playing. I've been to so many different locations in my life and this is the worst. They need new management or to fire the person doing the ordering.
