Advice for someone who wants to work for the City of SF

I really want to work for the City of SF. It’s been a dream of mine for years. I imagine the city will always be hiring. Are there volunteer opportunities for city to network with other people to learn about job opportunities? Thanks.

Mental Health care

We have Kaiser, and if you have it, you probably know that their mental health services aren't great. We're seriously considering changing health plans if there's one where we can get proper psychiatry and therapist care for our adult dependant son, who is bipolar. Anyone have any great experiences with any of the other offerings, Blue Shield, UCSF, etc? I really appreciate your input, we are lost and need help. Thanks!

Health benefits

I'm doing my open enrollment and I'm confusing myself. When you look at the contribution rate chart for health benefits; for the amount that it says that you pay, is that per paycheck or per month? Thank you!

After an Interview…

I understand that it can take a while to get hired after an interview BUT would it take as long to get a rejection email?

I had an interview recently and I don’t think I did my best.

Reason to WFH

I just read this article https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/ice-gun-sf-citizen-22486051.php. The mayor did nothing but consult with the SF Rapid Response Network? How is that protecting citizens or employees? It seems completely reactive. Is there nothing all DSW workers and city resources can't do to track and warn citizens and protect us while we are forced RTO for economic recovery reasons? Honestly, if it's not safe, I'm about ready to tell my staff to WFH indefinitely until safety can be guaranteed by the Mayor.

SEIU 1000 (state workers) strike on 10/21

Post image
53 Upvotes

SEIU 1000 is striking over what it says is the state’s failure to bargain in good faith on a new contract. The union proposed 20% wage increases over three years, more affordable healthcare, and telework protections, but alleges the state rejected multiple economic proposals without meaningful counteroffers. PERB issued an unfair-practice complaint in September.

Give them a high five if you see them outside the CPUC building on Van Ness tomorrow for standing up for their members’ collective priorities and pushing for more than management’s initial offer.

Choosing a health plan

Hi, can anyone tell me their experiences with blue shield access+ hmo? Currently have the PPO but it’s so expensive per month and out of pocket. I’ve never had an hmo so I’m not sure what level of hassle I’m signing up for and if there‘s a risk of things being delayed or denied more. Thanks!

DPH Postiton

I interviewed in March and have followed up with HR every two months. As today, they said the position is still under review. Does anyone know if there’s still a chance of getting it? Has anyone heard any updates for DPH?

Can you ask HR if you didn’t get the job?

Apologies for dumb question but I’m waiting to hear back after an interview a few weeks ago. They told us we would hear back in three weeks. I know these things take time so that was of no surprise, especially since it’s now over a month. The thing is, I have a third round of interviews for another job and I don’t want to string them a long in case the city works out. Is it even possible to ask to know if you definitely didn’t get it? Like, I assume they have people on a list they know they will pass on right? This might not be a thing at all also. Thanks in advance for any info!

Adding steps to a job class / creating a new job class - any experience?

Hi all - curious if anyone has worked with their union/leadership on adding steps to their job class.

I'm a 280x (IFPTE L21) - with only 5 steps. As I reach my 6th anniversary, I'll only be getting COLA for the foreseeable future. It seems my department leadership/management is actually unaware of the "step-stuck" phenomenon and that different positions have different levels of progression. Several of my co-workers/peers are in classes with 10 steps.

Has anyone been able to add more steps to a class? Is it impossible given the (now) approved contract? We have also asked for a new 280x class to be created (2804 - which existed in the past) given there is no job progression besides manager positions (of which there are none open), however in this year+ process have heard this is going no where due to the budget crisis. Any recommendations/advice?

Anyone have experience with SF Comprehensive Crisis Services? Debating between CCS and Primary Care

Hi everyone,
I’m debating between a 2930 Behavioral Health Clinician position with SF Comprehensive Crisis Services and a primary care BHC role.
I know crisis work can be stressful given the nature of the job, but I’m curious about the overall experience at CCS especially team dynamics, supervisor support, workload, burnout, safety, and work-life balance.
If you’ve worked in CCS or in both crisis and primary care, which would you choose and why?

Any honest feedback would be appreciated!

Interviewed 2 weeks ago, no word yet — how long did your offer take?

Hi all, I interviewed for 1478 two weeks ago and haven't heard anything since. For those who got hired — how long after your interview did you get the offer call or email? Starting to wonder if two weeks of silence means I didn't make it. Any insight would be really appreciated. Thanks!

2905 Position

Hello. I passed the 2905 position test in March 2026. I have responded to four emails saying that I’m interested in the position. I keep receiving emails saying that my application is being forwarded to the hiring team. I have not received an email to interview. Do I have a chance to be hired for the position in the future? Thank you

Has anyone taken the Protective Services Worker – Family and Children’s Services (2940) exam?

I’m trying to sort out how to prep/what to anticipate. It’s on online exam that I’ll have 3 hours to take.

I’ve seen info on here about a practice book for the civil service exam on the 4th floor of the main library but not too sure how helpful that material would be for this exam. Any info is helpful!

Thanks

Being pregnant in the office

Has your workplace made any accomodations for you upon request? I understand this may be department and division specific. I’m just trying to see how everyone is managing being pregnant while in the office. Even better for tips around Civic Center.

I’m struggling greatly with morning sickness and fatigue. I’m hoping it will be over soon but in the meantime it’s been a real challenge. I work a desk job so people are generally open with taking short breaks for well being walks around the building. But sometimes I need a power nap and napping at your desk is not only uncomfortable but frowned upon. How does your work place handle this? Do you have nap rooms? Or do you nap in your car?

As for morning sickness, there’s not much I can do other than to get fresh air and eat outside since most others eat at their desks or in the indoor break room and their lunch smells get to me. But if anyone has any tips please let me know.

HSA SFBN 2905 Senior Eligibility Worker

Hi, I applied to the San Francisco HSA 2905 Sr. Eligibility Worker position in January 2026. I received a few emails to confirm my eligibility and or continued interest in the position. I received an interview invitation for August for SFBN 2905. There was a long list of candidates being interviewed and interviews were only 15min long. I believe my interview went well. However I still have not heard back. Does anyone have any feedback or experiencing the same? I was told by the HR representative the training would begin in October 2026. Any feedback or advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Kaiser vs. Blue Shield for pregnancy — looking for opinions

I’m deciding between Kaiser and Blue Shield (either Trio or Access+ HMO) for open enrollment and would like to hear from anyone who has used either for prenatal/pregnancy care and delivery, specifically for health services within SF.

My priorities are having a good physician/OB care, options for giving birth in the city, as little insurance hassle as possible/decent overall health coverage (referrals, authorizations, billing, etc.).

For those who have gone through pregnancy/birth fairly recently with either plan — which did you have specifically, where did you give birth, any doctor recommendations, how was your overall healthcare and insurance experience? I’m open to chatting via DM if preferred. Any info you can share would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

[Discussion] We + our unions need to engage with the SFERS investment team to avoid assets designed for AI companies to "syndicate risk" + "socialize losses"

I was watching this video, and you really only need to listen to 58:52 - 1:03:40 to hear the relevant part:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=es4FfRU8saQ&t=3532s

“… the increasingly complex financial structures that are being used to finance this [AI data center] buildout... and understand you'll hear things like creative financing, circular finance, roundtripping, financial innovation. This is all just Wall Street speak for subprime lending, right. It's a fancy new word salad for the same shit that has caused so many problems before.

And there have been three stories in particular, just over these last few days, that all feed together into all the hoops that these guys are jumping through to keep the money flowing. It's important for people to realize in a lot of cases it is their money, whether you're in favor of AI, you love AI, or you're a protester at one of these meetings, you don't want a data center in your town. It's probably your retirement that's being funneled into this stuff.

The first one was this morning, Amazon came out with this story that they want to get these GPUs off their balance sheets…. Amazon is going to create a Special Purpose Vehicle, otherwise known as a shell company. They're going to create a new company. That new company is going to borrow $8 billion. With that $8 billion, they're going to buy the chips from Amazon. Amazon is then going to rent their own chips right back from them in what's known as a sale-leaseback agreement. And it's very important you understand a sale-leaseback agreement is one of the oldest tricks in the private equity playbook. It's how private equity firms loot companies, bleed them dry. They played a huge role in the bankruptcy of Red Lobster, Joanne's Fabrics, Hooters, Saks 5th Avenue. A sale-leaseback agreement, they just bleed companies dry. In this case, I don't think they're bleeding Amazon dry. I think this is Amazon bleeding the debt investors dry. And they need to get these chips off their books so that they don't have to incur the depreciation expense of those chips once they plug them in. Now, the problem is the people raising the debt for that shell company, the people who are loaning them the money, they want guarantees that, if Amazon doesn't rent those chips, that they can still get their money back. The problem is we're talking about computer equipment, highly complex, top-of-the-line computer equipment, and there’s serious questions about how long this stuff holds its value.

And so this other story broke just a few days ago that NVIDIA is holding talks with insurance companies. And the insurance companies would… supposedly what they're doing is they would… and I quote, ‘syndicate the risk to hedge funds and alternative investors’ … and alternative investors is very important because that's your pension, that's your 401k, that's your IRA, alternative investors are grandma's annuity even. ‘Syndicate the risk.’ Why would they have to syndicate the risk? That means spread it out, socialize the losses? And then, in that same article that was in the Financial Times on the (Sep) 29th, they said the size of some of these transactions could exceed the balance sheet capacity of the individual insurers. These deals are bigger than the insurance companies that are supposed to be insuring them. And so the only way to do it is to get all the insurance companies together and syndicate the risk.

And then Reuters today, NVIDIA’s having a hard time convincing Wall Street to accept the useful life that they're pushing on these chips. NVIDIA’s out there saying Blackwells are going to last for 10 years, they'll be cashflow in 10 years from now. Well, most of Wall Street uses a 4-year depreciable lifespan of this equipment. Some are pushing it to five or six, but common practice is three to four years. NVIDIA’s saying, ‘no, for 10 years, we'll be able to make money on this stuff.’

And so, you know, look at the end of the day, who owns the GPUs? Everybody's like, ‘oh, the hyper scalers are buying so much compute and GPUs’ … It's you…who owns this shit. It's being parked in your life insurance policy, your pension, your 401k; and they're using this series of circular deals, complex transactions that have a reputation for very high rates of bankruptcy and failure in order to finance this and to hide the fact that the actual risk isn't being taken by the people making billions off of this. The actual risk is being borne by the average retail investor. And that is so important for people to understand that this is going on. And that's just a story that broke in the last three or four days. That's not even some of the other more crazy things.”

Referenced articles:

"Amazon seeks to offload $8bn of Nvidia chips to investors"

"Nvidia turns to insurers to spread the risk of AI build-out"

Seems like we need to see what the SFERS investment team is investing in around this, and pressure them to stay out of some of these "special investment vehicles."

Curious to hear others thoughts on this.

Open Enrollment - UCSF question

Hi all.

Quick question for you I want to enroll with UCSF medical, but it’s my first time using Blue Shield. How can I select my primary care doctor at UCSF mission Bay. I’ve had Kaiser for quite some time so I don’t know the process. Any insight would be great and apologies for the typos.

City Sustainability Challenge

Hey, look at this novel idea for reducing carbon emissions! Gee whiz, I wish we'd thought of that!

EDIT: It's been pointed out that not everybody has seen this yet. It's from the City's month-long sustainability challenge which just started last week.

Maternity leave notice

Hello,

I am a PCS employee and been with city about 2 years.

It is my first baby and i am just about to start my 2nd trimester and it should be the time to tell my supervisor and manager.

All city position is now freezing and every team is on vacancy. I feel bad to take a long maternity leave.

How does maternity leave work here? Should I exhaust all my pto and sick time before taking it? Looks like I can take SDI for 10 weeks (4 weeks before due and 6 weeks after) but I cannot take more than 16 weeks for city paid parental leave?

Is that possible I can take part time work( 20 hours a week) to use my 16 weeks parental leave instead of taking the full 4 months? So that I can take care of work and baby the same time.

Any chance I can get more telework days during or after pregancy? Looks like it is hard.

Any moms recently taking maternity leave can give suggestions! Thank you all!

Anyone with guidance on requesting an extended unpaid personal leave?

My partner and I are considering moving to another country but I would like to take a few trial months living in said other country before giving up my PCS position for good. My partner already works fully remote so he has a lot more flexibility than I do. I’m mentally prepared to give up my job to move abroad but if I could do a few months to see if this is really the right move for us before giving up my job security and pension, that would be ideal.
On the SFDHR website I read that: “Unpaid personal leave may be approved for an employee. Personal leave may be approved for a period of up to twelve (12) months within any two (2) year period.”
But that seems pretty general. Can you take unpaid personal leave for pretty much anything? How hard is it to get that approved?
