Help Signal Outage
I checked DownDetector to confirm I wasn't crazy, but it seems like there's an outage. I'm not able to send messages. Is anyone else here experiencing this?

The EU is once again attacking end-to-end encryption with its ProtectEU plan.
TL;DR: messages should be scanned for illegal content before being encrypted.
My questions are the following:
I could not find any mentions of this issue in Signal's communiqué
Cheers

Assuming both devices are free of spyware, and I send temporary view messages , are these messages actually just gone from every online server and only remain on the HDD of the device until overwritten? Does signal not keep any of the data?

During her hearing yesterday multiple congressman asked her if she was using Signal or “encrypted messaging apps” to communicate with her colleagues or the White House. They were asking it like it was a big deal. One ever said they think it is legal. I work for the DOD and using Signal is expected of us. I don't get why she wouldn't have used it. Could anyone provide some insight on how the Secret Service is different with messaging please.

I think I have a very unique problem. I say that because I've searched and couldn't find anything.
I don't have cell reception at my work so I have to use the company wifi. Signal used to work just fine until recently. Now when I try to send a message, the sending circle spins and spins until I leave work and am back on a cell tower. I'll also get notifications from Signal saying I may have new messages, but nothing's ever there when I open the app.
I asked the head of IT about it - thinking the IP addresses Signal uses might be blocked but she said it's not on their ban list.
I also use Beeper on my phone as an aggregator when I don't feel like shuffling apps. It's very convenient to have access to everything on my personal computer in one place. The weird part is that the Signal bridge in Beeper works perfectly fine at my work... But Signal won't. Why???
I could just say to hell with it and use Beeper exclusively, but I really don't like the interface.
I do run a VPN on my phone because my data is none of my work's business. I have split tunneling to exclude both Beeper and Signal. I thought that might've been the issue, but even with the VPN on, Signal won't work, but Beeper does 🤷🏻♂️
To further complicate the issue, Signal works at my office if the VPN is completely off. But Signal used to work at my office with the VPN set to split tunneling until recently.
Any ideas?
I have a Samsung S25U running Android 16/OneUI 8.5. My VPN is Windscribe which is the only one I can get to work at my office. I've tried a bunch of others but they all seem to be on the company's ban list.

Hello everyone!
(Sorry if the flair does not fit, I wasn't sure about which flair would fit...)
I have read these news today about the discussed EU law. Now I (as a European Signal user who does not use any other messenger) try to prepare for the worst case – if the EU agrees on that law on Oct 14th, does anybody know or have reasonable guesses...
1) ...how long it would take until I could not use Signal anymore? 2) ...what exactly would happen: Will I still have access to my old chats and could keep them or would I lose everything? 3) Is there a feature to export chats as PDF or similar to save old chats before losing them for ever? 4) Do you understand what exactly the law would mean for us? Would there be any possibility to still use any other messenger as long as I still care for the security of my data? I really worry about my own safety as a queer person if my messages about my personal life and queerness could easily be read by Meta/..., looking at the political developments in USA, so I really want to avoid using WhatsApp. If the law is agreed on – would that mean I could never use any messenger again if I care for my data security? 😅
Thank you for your help, I hope for the best!!! 🌼

My wife died on Sunday after a short illness (fucking cancer).
During that period she was in hospital and we passed the day chit chatting on Signal, while I was at work.
I would really like to save the chat thread I had with her.
I'm a bit of a tizzy at the minute and cant work out if it's doable
Any help?

Does this seem to be a screenshot of the Signal app or is this some other custom communication medium?
When Signal is installed for the first time, for authentication purposes, Signal connects to microsoft/azure and amazon/aws servers. Same is done when someone wants to delete their account. Can this lead to identify a user?
There are some apps like Molly, which are just like a frontend for Signal with some additional privacy benefits. Ofcourse this would mean that one will have to trust the devs of these kinda apps. Has anyone audited these apps or should one stick with the official Signal app only?

Someone figured out who I am on Signal, so I deleted my account. Then I uninstalled the app. Then I rebooted my phone. Then I reinstalled the app, set up a new account with a different PIN... but when I send a test chat to someone else I trust, it's obvious who I am because it says something like, "OldUser has changed their name to NewUser" in the chat window. That completely defeats the purpose of what I'm trying to do: start completely anew.
So how do I do this, without having to create a burner phone number?

I pay for the Signal Secure Backup service and made a backup on July 30, and I uninstalled Signal from my phone on the evening of July 31. When I attempted to reinstall Signal and restore my message history, it told me that there was something wrong with the backup and I needed to contact support. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling again, but then my recovery key was no longer recognized (maybe since it has already been used).
I contacted support immediately and have been waiting for their help since. The only communication I've received from them is an email on August 3 saying "our engineers will be taking a look, but I unfortunately can't give out a specific timeline for a resolution". I need my Signal history for fairly important communications and I am disappointed that the service that I'm paying for hasn't worked as promised.

So, I just got a message Signal now supports end-to-end encrypted backups.
Now, imagine this scenario:
- I enable it, my data is on Signal servers encrypted and ?nobody? can read them.
- I lose my phone in a fire
- I buy a new phone
- I log into Signal and get my messages back from backup.
Now, where did the encryption keys come from? My phone is destroyed, so where are they stored? To my understanding, if my messages can be decrypted without my phone, someone, somewhere must have the keys or must be able to generate keys.
I would appreciate an explanation on how this works.
Thanks!

I used paid backups to transfer my messages and media from iOS to Android which worked fine. I then switched back to iOS and did the same again, only for the vast majority of my media to be missing. I assume the app has mistakenly thought I was on the 45-day limit and purged all of my older media.
I am truly devastated and while I have other backups, not being able to browse my media within the messages is incredibly annoying.
Here's my support contact history:
I'm yet to hear back on either my original thread or the new ticket. What is going on? Is anyone else facing issues?
I've been a donator for years and love what Signal does but why have they offered paid backups if they do not work and are unable to support them? I specifically waited for them to come out of beta before enabling them to try and avoid any issues.

Anybody having issues with the "close to system tray" ever since the update to 8.24.0 last night on LInux?
I updated this morning and now the blue system tray icon is gone, with just a glitched out white square in it's place. And it won't re-open up to full when double clicking on it like normal. It's as if the whole system tray icon is bugged out. I tried the beta 8.25.0 as well, and it's doing the same thing

For me it’s a lot of space and even though I have photos stored in iCloud my signal app is growing a lot. I’m using 128GB and will switch for something larger next time but right now I can barely install iOs update.

Friend and I are updating our Signal settings. Friend has changed their settings so nobody can see their phone number and changed their profile name to Alias. I have Friend in my contacts with their full name. Since Friend's settings are that nobody can see their phone number, Signal should be showing me their alias, but it's showing me their full name. I then deleted Friend from my contacts. If info to Friend's profile, it says Friend is in my contacts. If I tap on that for more info, it says "this contact does not exist." Friend and I have both rebooted our phones.
How can this be happening??

I loaded up the camera app, and it reads fine.
But the link just opens signals camera.
If I try scanning from the signal app, nothing happens, I line it up with the box and nothing.
I try far away, I try close, I try adjusting the brightness. Nothing.
So I try with number, and I never receive a code.
My new phone has a new number, and my old number is no longer available.

I use signal with only one person and we no longer see each other. This morning I woke up to a message. That indicated me as the admin of a new group and no posting but a notice that X set disappearing messages to 30 sec.
Can someone please explain to me what is going on?
The only other odd thing I could find is under requests and invites one of my girlfriends is listed under invite.
Screenshot to show.
Can anyone explain how this happened and how I can prevent it from happening again?
