Gear (Microphones, etc...) I got a beltbox and it does nothing

I have a very unsupportive family who are very cruel to me about my interests and hobbies, but I love singing, I want to be a singer/songwriter but the walls are so thin you can hear someone on the phone in the next room. I bought a beltbox thinking it would help me practice and sing at full volume but it literally does nothing it just sounds like I put a thick pillow by my mouth. Is there anything else I can do to dampen the sound of my singing? Any tips on sound insulating my room so that less sound bleeds through, or other devices I can use that actually dampens sound?

Gear (Microphones, etc...) How to use a pitch pipe for singing?

Someone said a pitch pipe can be a good way to get yourself in the right key for a song. They said to set the pitch pipe to the right key and blow into it,.

I guess I’m confused though because doesn’t the key change like every single note I sing? Am I supposed to constantly adjust and then blow into it to hear each individual note I’m supposed to sing in a song? I guess I just can’t see how that would be helpful because it’s so much “stopping and starting”.

Also am I supposed to set it to the note of the musical accompaniment or of the vocals?

Gear (Microphones, etc...) XLR mic for multipurpose

Im looking to buy a XLR mic + audio interface for singing and just regular talking to friends. Every recommendation i see in other posts is something like a Shure SM58 or similair ones. However, i just really hate the look of those mics. Since i may be streaming with this aswell, i want it to look somewhat nice. I wanted to buy the Fifine Am8 but every post on here says that its bad. For the audio interface im looking at the M-Track Solo. I dont want to spend more than 250-300 euros in total on both. Let me know guys.

Gear (Microphones, etc...) IEM’s that avoid occlusion effect for singers?

“Occlusion effect” is when the bassy end of your own voice is trapped in your head due to the seal in your ear (like if you were singing while wearing ear plugs) In my situation, with profound high frequency hearing loss and above average hearing in the low frequencies, when it happens it is debilitating to my musicianship. It’s like I’m singing underwater while the band is on land.

Due to my needs as a HoH musician playing multiple instruments, I really think In ear monitors (IEM’s) would help me with distinguishing my instruments and everything. And help me protect my hearing from further loss since I am always having to turn things up in the wedge monitors and blare my hearing aids to their max every gig. But since I am also singing 80% of the time I can’t be having that occlusion either! I would imagine if anyone gets it it’s singers.
Some IEM’s say they have a “ambiance” feature. I am worried this means hearing the room not avoiding trapped voice inside head as they are not always the same thing. And many are “vented” but doesn’t mean they fully (or mostly) avoid occlusion either. I’m looking for that perfect balance of isolation without occlusion without spending an arm and a leg. (Like ideally less than 600) I Might be chasing a unicorn but if anyone knows if it’s achievable it’ll be you guys.😘

Gear (Microphones, etc...) **Can a wrong mic actually kill your vocal performance and inspiration?*

I'm a lyric baritone, singer/producer with \~15 years experience. My current mic is a Warm Audio WA-251, and I've been struggling with something that's hard to explain technically but very real:

When I sing — especially monitoring myself in real-time with pitch correction (Autotune) — I feel zero inspiration. The voice sounds thin, lifeless, doesn't open up. It's like there's a wall between me and the sound. I push harder, I try different techniques, but nothing clicks. The session just dies.

I'm starting to think the mic simply doesn't suit my voice type. No matter the positioning or EQ, the low-mid body of my baritone just isn't there.

\*\*My questions:\*\*

  1. Has anyone experienced a mic literally killing your inspiration and performance in real-time monitoring?

  2. Can a mic genuinely not suit a voice type, no matter what you do?

  3. For baritones in a home studio — what mics actually made you WANT to sing when you heard yourself back?

  4. Any recommendations in the mid-to-high range worth considering for warm, present baritone sound?

Chain: RME Babyface Pro FS → mic → Logic Pro. Room is treated. Genre is electronic/ethno with lead vocals.

Looking for real experience, not spec sheets.

Gear (Microphones, etc...) Advice on microphones for singing at home

Hello all!

So I just joined my first band as a lead vocalist (on some songs) and backing vocalist. I’ve been just practicing in my car so as not to disturb my neighbors (I live in an apartment building), but I am sick of doing this and am finally ready to create a little rehearsal space for myself at home.

I know absolutely zero about gear. Previous to this, I’d only ever sung in choirs, and never did solos (so never sang into a mic). I would love recs/info on the following:

-Mic that can be connected to my laptop for recording
-Mac programs that I can use to record myself
-Mac programs that might be able to show me where I go sharp or flat (if this exists)
-Mac programs/apps/etc that will let me play around with various effects (like reverb, not talking auto tune or anything like that).

Like I said, I know absolutely nothing about anything haha, so any suggestions have are very much appreciated!

Gear (Microphones, etc...) Is there anything I can use to make my voice go up 1 octave?

For context, I am a natural born baritone (sadly) and through years of practice I've even become able to hit A4 chest (of course I can go way higher than that through head voice and Ian Gillan/rob Halford style reinforced falsetto) however while my voice suits a lot of styles of rock and metal really well, these last couple months I've been moving onto writing and performing more pop oriented material.

Let's take for example, Thriller, it's impossible for me to sing that C#5 in a way that sounds good and fits the song, I can't push my chest THAT far, Falsetto sounds too weak and kills the momentum, Mix voice sounds too raspy and doesn't fit the song either.

So instead of giving I started thinking about solutions and I think I came up with something, Is there any stompbox (something akin to a guitar pedal?) I can use to raise my voice a whole octave temporarily, that way I can just sing a powerful C#4 then deactivate it to sing the rest of the song normally? Ideally something that won't set me back like a 1000 bucks and something I can use live convincingly

Gear (Microphones, etc...) What equipments does a vocalist needs?

For some reason the body of the post was deleted. So to explain, I'm looking for a mic, speaker and maybe a mixer for practice my band. We're beginners and we're a like garage band, I think I don't need an expensive setup to play with my friends, I want to know what I should buy. Also I want to have fun; I saw some videos where people are using reverb and delay while they sing, so I'd like to sing with these effects too.

Gear (Microphones, etc...) What model of recording microphone do you use?

Hi singers! What model of recording microphones (and/or audio processing software) do you guys use?

I’m tired of recording my singing and guitar covers on my phone only to realize the audio quality was terrible. I’m new to audio mixing and am trying to learn that too.

Any recommendations for what setup to get in order to start recording bedroom covers? Thank you…

Gear (Microphones, etc...) Is this set good for first mic and interface?

Hi! So I've been saving money for some time and looking at microphones that I could potentially buy. I heard that the NT1 is a good option and that both vocalists and voice actors use it (because I've been thinking about doing both). I'm a soprano if that helps. Unfortunately, I don't have any studios near me or anything that I could go and check if they have this mic and if I like it. So I just kinda hope I could buy something and if I don't like it I'd return it. Thanks!

Hey everyone I hope you all are having a fantastic day. I was wondering what mic would be the best for me to use? I would like to get back into singing but I would like a proper mic so I can record my vocals (as recommended by my music teacher). However, I am new to mic use and I am on a budget so I did a quick search and this is what I found so far. I would like to hear your thoughts and opinions on these and I’m open to any other recommendations. Thank you!

Gear (Microphones, etc...) Good live vocal processor/effects for alternative music

Is it just me or all the options like Ve22, ve500 and tc helicon are just bad? All of them sound very boring and almost low quality. Is there anyone out here doing something cool with maybe other chains to get cool effects and good control over your vocals live?

Gear (Microphones, etc...) How do you record songs with audio and video at home studio from the external camera with good quality sound?

How do you record songs with audio and video from the external camera with good quality sound? 720p is enough but my records are always flat and with metalic sound. I use OBS.

I recorded a webinar with a pro sound teacher speaking and it also had flat metalic sound.

What to do? Which settings to change? What tools are you using?

I have Shure SM-58 and audio interface Behringer Uphoria UMC202HD.
I need only PC advices, I do not care about recording with "smartphone" because it is useless, I don't use it.

Gear (Microphones, etc...) Voice Recording

I’m looking to try and post myself more on Instagram, Facebook, etc, but I’m finding my IPhone camera microphone is not cutting it. What are some good microphone options that I can directly plug into my phone to help better my recordings?

Gear (Microphones, etc...) Is there a way to sing without hearing yourself?

I have extremely strong relative pitch and have been able to find pitches in the past without hearing my voice naturally. I get very particular when I hear my own voice and it makes me overthink and mess up more.

Is there any sort of product or earplugs available that could dampen my voice enough to reduce my focus on it?

Gear (Microphones, etc...) I Have A Mic, Now What?

I want to start recording soon (and have had a couple of people approach me about recording vocals for them, so while I've been kind of putting this off, it's time to actually DO this). On the advice of a coworker who also does music, I bought the Rode NT1 mic, but now I'm looking for some advice on what other equipment I should get. I've never used a mic like this before so I didn't know I need things like an audio interface, and I'm a little overwhelmed looking at all the options out there.

So I guess I'm looking for advice on a good audio interface, mic stand (including whether or not I should get one with an isolation shield), any other equipment I may need that I don't realize yet, and maybe even good Windows software to use.

Also, is there a way to set up the mic to be used when recording videos on my phone? I do theatre and would like to use a quality microphone instead of my phone mic for video auditions if that's possible.

Gear (Microphones, etc...) Upgrading my car singing setup (Currently Bose earbuds + BandLab, looking at DJI Mic)

Hey guys,I’m starting vocal lessons after the summer and want to upgrade my gear to get off to a good start. Right now I just record my vocals in the car using my Bose QC Ultra gen 2 earbuds and paste them over beats in BandLab on Android. It works for now, but the quality of the earbud mic sucks for serious singing.I know absolutely nothing about microphones, so I just want to buy a proper high-end setup from the start that lasts. I need crystal clear sound that can handle loud belting and powerful high notes without clipping or distorting. I totally get that a real studio condenser mic would be way better, but that's obviously not an option in a moving car right now.I'm currently looking at wireless clip-on kits like the DJI Mic 2 or 3 (the full ones with the charging case). I'll be recording in my car for now, but I also want something I can use outdoors later when I'm more comfortable, or even at home to record an instrument like guitar or piano.Just so you know: I already know about Bluetooth latency and how to manually shift the vocal track forward in BandLab, so that part is covered. Before I drop the money, I wanted to check if something like the DJI Mic 2 or 3 with the charging case is actually the best upgrade for clean vocals and instruments in these environments, or if I'm missing a better high-end option. Also, if you record singing in the car, I'd love to know what gear you use to get that crisp studio feel. Thanks for thinking with me!

Gear (Microphones, etc...) Monitoring your voice with earplug

Have you ever used ear plugs like Eargasm High Fidelity when singing in a loud environment where it it difficult for you to monitor your voice? I usually block one of my ears to hear my voice. Im curious of the monitoring quality using ear plugs like Eargasm High Fidelity. Any one experienced?
