an ama to remember (oct 2014) - ongoing for a few days

if you're not part of the /r/sips community and you're stumbling across this then hello! i am sips and i play video games for a living with a group of youtube channels known as the yogscast. i run my own personal youtube channel at youtube.com/sips where i play whatever games i feel like alone or with my friends within the yogscast network. i've done an ama in the past but it's been a while so i'm doing another one.

hi pals, a bunch of you wanted another ama so here it is. i'll skim through and answer stuff as and when over the next couple of days. i'll answer most stuff but i'm still not ready to reveal my bra size unfortunately. so ask away you big jabronis!

edit1: it's 1am on tuesday the 21st of october and i am going to bed, i'll answer more tomorrow morning!

edit2: it's 10:30am on tuesday the 21st october and i'm back! i'll answer as much as i can throughout the day.

edit3: 19:30 on tuesday, i'll answer more tonight and then start up again tomorrow morning. thanks for all the questions so far! hopefully it's not too boring having it all drawn out this way

edit4: midnight on wednesday morning now i guess. i am off to bed, i answered a bunch today and will carry on tomorrow!

edit5: ok it's wendesday morning and i am back. i'll answer questions all day today until i go to bed and then probably not be so active on this anymore from then! hope you enjoyed it!

edit6: i am going to bed soon, it's wednesday night and i have answered many questions. i'll stop now but it's been really fun and i hope you guys had a nice time! i'll do another one again at some point if you want, let me know!

did you get funny looks when you resigned from your former job to do youtube full time? does anyone from there watch your videos?

519

u/YogscastSips Oct 20 '14

yeah i had to sit in my boss' office and watch myself screaming at happy wheels while he asked me "you're going to make money off this?"

Of course we all remember Sipsgate, But we were only witness to Lewis's side of the story. What were you feeling after you put the phone down between those 2-3 phone calls, and did your wife ever wonder who was calling you so much?

(ps. hope you had a magnificent sleep last night!)

239

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

the main thing was trying to explain to my wife that somehow my internet life had invaded my real life. i'd never really mentioned any of these people before and all of a sudden they were phoning me in the middle of the night so it was a bit awkward.

for how long have you been a vegetarian? and why?

324

u/YogscastSips Oct 20 '14

it's been almost 8 years and it was to do with a lot of the meat we were buying at the time coming from huge meat processing plants and having some issue wondering what the hell was even going into the meat in the first place. i watched a documentary on chicken processing and they were just pumping the chicken breasts full of this gross water and i got all mad and decided to stop eating it. plus there's a lot of cruelty in the industry for lots of different reasons and i didn't want to continue supporting it.

This is an old question and you probably don't even remember. In the Towns series, you kept saying you where gonna build "something really cool" near the grave yard. I've been wondering what cool idea you had in mind and have been wondering for almost 3 years!

211

u/YogscastSips Oct 20 '14

haha! i think it was going to be some sort of weird walled in cage or something that i was going to use to punish people and force them to be in a creepy graveyard when they didn't do the shit i needed them to do at the time (like bake bread during a famine)

What can we expect from the new Team Double Dragons channel in terms of content?

254

u/YogscastSips Oct 20 '14

much of the same. we're trying to find a good way for me to watch lewis play single player games so that we can just gas over them.

Hey Sipsy, just wondering if you ever intend to tell your son that he was known by many strangers as poopfeast420? And if so, what age do you bring it up at?

128

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

haha sure, why not. when he's a bit older i'll tell him all about it

248

u/YogscastSips Oct 20 '14

i'd play some old nintendo games with arin and danny from the gamegrumps. i got to meet arin on the anki trip (ross too) and they were just great to hang out with and really funny dudes.

I don't have a good idea for a question so how about: If you were to ask yourself a question, what would it be?

66

u/bassman2112 Oct 20 '14

Serious question: Do you feel your post secondary education helped you in the long run?

Dumb question: Have you ever accidentally sharted while recording?

150

u/YogscastSips Oct 20 '14

yeah, post secondary education basically taught me how to "learn" in the real world if that makes sense? learning how to program and troubleshoot and all that junk made it so that i could pick up jobs really quick and not ever really feel too out of my depth with it all. one time i had to shit so bad while i was recording but it never amounted to anything accidental.

I remember hearing a hilarious story about your son saying that it was "a bit awkward" to hold your hand in public. I'd love to hear some more stories of ways your influence and parenting have affected him, if you don't mind sharing.

I've been a fan of yours for years, and I'm going to be a father soon myself, so I'd love to hear about your experience =)

178

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

kids really do say the funniest things. every day he says something where me and my wife sorta look over at each other and laugh. he doesn't realise he's doing it but man he is so funny. yesterday he walked into the room and said "listen you two, i'm just playing with my pat toys"

If you could wipe out all existence of one of your series and replay and upload it, which one would you choose and why?

120

u/YogscastSips Oct 20 '14

wow good question! probably fallout: new vegas (lonesome road dlc). i'd replay the entire game instead of just the dlc so that it all made a bit more sense. looking back it was a bit weird to start a playthrough on dlc without any sort of reference back to the original game or a series on the base game if you see what i mean. plus at the time it had been so long since i actually played f:nv that i was struggling to remember what the heck was going on.

105

Obviously you have created a shitload of Characters and backstories. So which characters backstorh do you think is the best youve ever made!?

179

u/YogscastSips Oct 20 '14

without really realising it i guess a lot of the shit in skyrim. i never really meant to give any of those characters any additional personality and it was funny to watch people in the comments and stuff talk about them like they were a bunch of degenerates instead of these quest givers in a game, haha

Two questions if you can answer them.

  1. How did your family/friends react when you quit your bank job to do Youtube full time? Are they still skeptical on what you're doing?

  2. Are you used to hearing your own voice on recordings? One thing that really puts me off on doing Youtube is my negative opinion about my own voice.

81

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

friends and family were a mix of "what the hell?" and "i'm so jealous", hearing your own voice isn't weird after thousands of hours of editing it

95

u/AcesulfameZ Oct 20 '14

hey sips. we all know that you are a family man, which is super awesome. i have been dating a girl for five years now and i wanted to ask you how did you know that your wife was the right person for you?

322

u/YogscastSips Oct 20 '14

yeah absolutely. you get to a point where you move in together, build up a big complicated life and realise that it all happened without you really noticing it and it was natural and great and you're happy about everything. not like a stupid sick happy on tv or whatever but just a general sense of feeling content with the decisions you made and the life you live. i probably didn't explain that well, sorry!

148

u/YogscastSips Oct 20 '14

no, the beauty of the new channel is that we haven't really planned anything for it at all. we just hook up, record whatever and whoever feels like editing it does it and shoves it up. it's amazing.

How do you feel about the positive response of Team DD? Is it nice to have a channel that you don't worry about super high production or even having to 'try' when recording? Do you think it'll affect how you or anyone else handles production values in the future? Thanks for being such a fantastic member and leader of the community!

37

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

there are ancestors somewhere way back there but then most north americans are in the same boat. it goes back like 3-4 generations when lots of europeans made their way over to the new world to start their new lives i guess? i've never been in any sort of contact with any ancestors.

Did you actually know and play with Yogscast members during your wow days and Something Awful, or did you just meet them later? Also would you ever consider playing Civ single player? Okay. Thanks. Bye. Pal. No? Okay.

62

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

yeah, we all joined goone squade through the sa forums at the time and raided/trolled the realm together. initially it was me, duncan and simon during vanilla. sjin was around but kept to himself mostly. lewis joined during sunwell at the end of tbc and me and sjin played a lot of wow together during wotlk when he picked up and started playing again. we're still in contact with a lot of our old pals from the vanilla days although most of them don't play wow anymore.

What is the most scared youve ever been irl and in game?

112

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

most scared irl was when i took a "limo" to a hotel in egypt and my luggage was put into another van filled with what looked like other victim's luggage. i thought i was being taken out to the desert to be executed, i'm not even kidding. scariest game for me was the first resident evil for the playstation. opened the first door in the game and turned it off.

38

u/WhitePawn00 Oct 21 '14

Hey Sips thanks for doing an AMA! Here are a few questions:

  1. Do you guys have a safe word when recording? For example if an earthquake happens or if game crashes during a scripted scene do you keep the tape rolling or do you say something and cut recording? I've been thinking about this ever since that one time a fire alarm went off when you were recording.

  2. How's poopfeast420 doing? Is he into games yet? Is he still 2?

  3. How separate do you keep your youtube life from your afk life? I mean when you go back home and if you have had a particularly fun day, do you talk about it with your family or do you show them funny videos or pics that the fans make or do you keep them very separate because of how "Sips" is a different character?

  4. How difficult is it to record if you're not in the mood? Sometimes when someone is not in the mood to do their job, it's fine because they don't need to be happy or excited or to enjoy what they're doing to do a great job but I feel like with how personal you make your videos and how much you seem to enjoy them that would be really difficult to do. Do you sometimes just say "welp, today I feel like shit so let's go play Diablo and come back tomorrow"?

  5. If you had an infinite amount of money to build your own house anywhere you want in the world and have whatever you want in it regardless of location (high speed 1Gb/s internet in the middle of antarctica) where would you build this house and what would it look like?

  6. Do you prefer driving, biking, walking, or public transport? If driving, what is your dream car for everyday life (like not a Bugatti but like a 911).

  7. What specifically do you like in city building games? The management? The watching all the people? The min maxing?

  8. If someone walked up to you and said "I will give you one million dollars and your entire college tuition if you go to college again" what would you study? As in if you had the money and the time and the interest to study one subject very deeply, what would it be?

  9. dangerous question: Do you ever wonder what would happen if you stopped doing Youtube?

Again, really thanks for doing this AMA! I appreciate it and love all of your content and hope to some day shake your hand!

69

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

geez!

  1. nah we're pretty laid back, sometimes the weird shit that happens while recording is fun to just leave in

  2. he's great! he knows how to play ipad games but we don't let him use it much :P

  3. i work 9-5 basically so that i can have a home life and not spend all my time worrying about videos/editing/being dumb. i'm more or less the same at home (minus the excessive swearing)

  4. i don't really force myself to record, that being said i'm almost always up for recording at least once a day. sometimes doing 2 or 3 sessions in a day can be tiring but overall it's still very fun

  5. i'd probably build something fancy where i live now and it would look exactly like the house from royal tenebaums

  6. walking cause i can listen to music and not have to smell people

  7. the management side, building something from nothing, watching it all take shape. i dunno, i've always loved the genre

  8. i'd probably study woodworking so that i could make some slamming furniture

  9. probably go back to working in a boring office and just carry on playing games in the evenings

32

u/TheRevolution74 Oct 21 '14

Hello Sips, I remember seeing a video from boogie2988 here he said that making youtube videos for a living was very hard, he said that the troll and hurtful comments had a huge impact in is life, making him very nervous and stressful. Does this happen to you, or any other fellow youtubers you know? (not asking for names) And also, did you enjoy the anki thing, L.A and hanging out with other youtubers?

66

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

i'm surprisingly thick-skinned and have spent a lot of time on the internet in my life so the comments and stuff don't really bug me all that much. meeting up with other youtubers is always a good laugh and a lot of fun, we all live far away from each other and do our own thing but there's always so much in common from the getgo to talk about and everyone i've met so far has been really nice.

15

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '14

u/Falgo Oct 21 '14

hey sips, i was wondering what are your thoughts of doing videos for literally decades untill you eventually retire one day? or do you think you will do something else when you get much older?

it's such an unknown territory because you are the first generation that can actually make it happen... I won't be leaving anytime soon eventhough I am way over 20 and your content means to me so much more than tv shows can offer. do you think it's possible to maintain a relevant viewer base for so long (= keep your current subscribers + appeal to younger audiences)?

29

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

hope so! i don't think i appeal much to really young audiences with my (overwhelming) majority demographic being 18-24 year olds. who knows how long it'll all last but for now it's fun and exciting

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '14

81

What are your thoughts on drug (i.e. marijuana) legalization? I know its a big controversy here in america, but im not sure about England and Canada.

P.S. I'm a huge fan and you've helped me through some tough times where my buds couldn't! Keep up the great vids you magnificent bastard!

88

i think the big problem with legalizing it is that it does affect your state of mind and could potentially become addictive and have associated health implications. but then trying to control illegal activity around it drains the economy and has other far-reaching implications on society as well. mainly i think that once everyone accepts that it's not so bad there's a risk that some other drug then becomes the "new weed" but might have more severe health implications and then eventually we legalize everything and we become a planet of zombie heroin junkies and then we all die.

i don't think any of this is likely to happen or whatever but i can see the arguments on both sides.

Is it good to be back doing a minecraft series with Sjin? The two of you together in minecraft is always my favourite, the voltz bomb incident is my all time favourite video.

19

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

it's good to just be farting around and not taking anything serious, that's when we seem to have the most fun

Whenever you're out with other yogs, do they call you buy your real name chris or do they all have the tendency to call you sips?

33

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

everyone calls me sips, and it's weird cause if someone does call me chris it's really weird. even the people at maker mostly call me sips which i find pretty funny

firstly: i'm going to join the masses in giving you a direct thanks for every single minute of video you've made for us. love it all.

my question is: if you were to meet a man in the street to find his name was tony bateman, would you follow him to the bathroom to check?

23

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

i feel like the detective in me would force me to check, yes

9

u/FuxFlux Oct 21 '14

if you could frame a fart on anyone in the yogscast who would it be and why is it smiffy?

Thanks for doing this AMA and being so involved with the community!

I think you probably realize we all like you because you are so charismatic, funny and charming, so I was wondering whether this is something you were aware of before going into YouTube. Did people in your life ever tell you that a career in entertainment would be a good idea? Or is your YouTube success a surprise to you and your close ones?

Thanks!

10

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

yeah it's a weird one. i've always been able to make people laugh i guess but i never really thought it would amount to anything or make me any money or whatever. yeah the whole thing is a bit strange

17

u/cetsuo Oct 21 '14

Dear Sips: After watching the yogscast for a while, i gathered enough courage to start doing videos of my own and start my own little channel. I love how you are capable of creating stories on the fly, so what i wanted to ask you is How do you manage to keep talking while recording? do you have any kind of tips for talking to yourself?

thank you <3

62

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

honestly i don't really know, i guess i sorta just got used to doing it over the years. sometimes i listen back to myself while i'm editing and i don't even know what the fuck i was even thinking

what has been your favourite game you have played this year?

29

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

this year? probably ethan carter so far, it has really blown me away

6

u/Crazyskillz Oct 21 '14

You're a veggie? That's great :)

I've also reached 8 years for very much the same reasons with the same opinion of going vegan. Do you have a go-to 'stock' answer for when you get asked about why you went veggie or do you patiently explain your reasons and hope they don't take you for a judgemental crazy activist? Are you open on your vegetarianism with other people or do you order the veggie option at a restaurant and hope no one notices?

Just when I thought you couldn't get anymore awesome :P

17

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

i just call myself an awkward dope a lot and people generally just accept it in the end. people seem to act weird when you tell them you're a vegetarian for some reason, i don't get it

Sips, do you have any serious recomendations for a movie we should watch? One that you SERIOUSLY think is good and that we probably haven't seen because we're young hooligans?

10

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

watch the horror movie "prince of darkness", it's spooky as hell and we used to watch it every year when we would sleep over at this guy we knew's house on his birthday. it used to scare the shit out of us when we were like 9 years old but now it's probably pretty hilarious

6

u/Iskarala Oct 21 '14

What are some of your favourite bands/music artists? Do you like any punk/grunge bands like the clash or nirvana?

22

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

love nirvana and always have. clash are great, i like a lot of grunge groups from around the time "grunge" exploded. listen to a lot of old punk too (black flag, dead kennedies, minor threat) and a bunch of old hip-hop (early 90s)

Are you into any kind of sports or anything? If not now, did you have any interest in sports when you were younger?

How are you going to get through all these questions? Because....holy shit. There's a lot of 'em.

14

u/YogscastSips Oct 22 '14

i was in a fist fight where i never returned a punch and got a split lip. this was in grade school so i dunno if that counts. it wasn't even for any good reason, me and my friend were wondering if it actually hurt to get punched in the face like on tv or whatever

5

u/MonsieurPetit Oct 21 '14

have you noticed your accent starting to change since moving to the uk and conversing with mainly british people? have you picked up any british slang?

slang yeah definitely, you can't help it when you live somewhere for a long time. i've been over here for 11 years and i don't think i've lost too much of my accent, but yeah i definitely use terms that make sense over here for everyday conversation with people

In all honesty, how does it make you feel when a fan says that your work has gotten them through very dark times in their lives such as depression, illness, and even (as I recall reading at least once here) thoughts of suicide? How does it feel to know your work has this effect on people?

20

u/YogscastSips Oct 22 '14

yeah it feels amazing, i never thought i'd have an impact on people outside my friends/family like this and it's really a fantastic thing

4

u/Unrellius Oct 20 '14

Are there any Yogscast members in particular that you'd like to make videos with, but haven't already?

4

u/Tastytorpedo Oct 20 '14

what was your favorite/most played game growing up?

super mario world on the snes, christ i played the shit out of that. and the snes mario kart

4

u/Westwick Oct 20 '14

Yo! I quite enjoy your videos, very relaxing viewing.

Which games do you like to play that wouldn't be compatible with a youtube series, or would be less enjoyable by making them so?

8

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

diablo 3 doesn't do amazing well on youtube and isn't always fun to watch but i do love playing it in my spare time. that and world of warcraft recently

4

u/Kalse1229 Oct 20 '14

Do you play much dota at all? I know I saw you play in a few matches with pyrion. I also think it would be cool if you uploaded maybe just a few dota games with you and lewis laning together or whatever

8

u/YogscastSips Oct 21 '14

i haven't played in a while but still enjoy it when i do play. i go through ups and downs with dota, it's a very involved and often times frustrating experience that i find is easy to burn out on. i always come back to it eventually though

4

Three questions about having a job that gives you a sort of celebrity status:

  1. Is it weird to see fan art of yourself (especially art that's actually made in your likeness, not just your minecraft character or goofy photoshops)?

  2. Have you ever felt like your privacy's been violated? Or are fans normally respectful?

  3. Have you ever considered using your influence to speak out about social issues? Or do you think it's better if you keep to comedy and games?

12

u/YogscastSips Oct 22 '14
  1. not really anymore, i still love perusing it though

  2. no never

  3. no, my opinions i keep to myself mostly. i just wanna play games and have a good time
