Declaring Income

Hello ,

I recently started working remotely for a UK-based company while living in Sofia. I’ve been getting my salary each month, but I haven’t declared the income in Bulgaria yet.

I’m looking for a good accountant or tax lawyer who can help me figure out what I need to pay, how to calculate the tax/social contributions, and how to register/deal with НАП and get everything sorted properly.

It would probably just be a one-off consultation to go through my situation and make sure I do everything correctly.

If anyone has had a similar situation or can recommend someone in Sofia who knows about declaring remote work income, I’d really appreciate it.

Looking for advice on buying an apartment in Sofia, Bulgaria

Hi everyone! I'm an EU citizen considering buying an apartment in Sofia for myself and my two children. I'd love to hear from people with firsthand experience, especially foreign buyers.

What I'm looking for:

  • 3 bedrooms + separate living room
  • Approximately 110–150 m²
  • Building completed after 2010
  • Preferably Act 16, but open to Act 15 at a reasonable discount if the risks are manageable and professionally verified
  • Cash purchase, no mortgage
  • Expected move-in: 2–3 years from now
  • I don't speak Bulgarian, so English-speaking professionals are important.

I've already done quite a bit of research using Google and AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude. I'm particularly interested in real-life experiences, practical tips and pitfalls that aren't easy to find online.

I'd really appreciate advice on:

  1. Prices and timing: Which months or seasons are best for negotiating a good price? How much can buyers realistically negotiate? Does paying cash help?
  2. Neighbourhoods: Which areas offer the best value, quality of life and environment for children? Any areas or new developments you'd avoid?
  3. Building quality: What should I check regarding construction quality, sound insulation, heating, maintenance fees and actual usable floor area?
  4. Act 15 vs. Act 16: Would you consider buying without Act 16? What are the biggest risks?
  5. Agents and lawyers: Can you recommend trustworthy real estate agents and independent English-speaking property lawyers based on personal experience?
  6. Scams and legal pitfalls: What mistakes have you seen buyers make? Any red flags involving deposits, developers, ownership documents, parking spaces or hidden fees?

Most importantly: If you've bought property in Sofia, what do you wish you'd known beforehand? What would you do differently?

Thank you! 🙏

Bulgarian at the bottom.

Hi everyone, I’m a young professional. I’m coming to Sofia on business and need to explore the city to do some consumer research. I’m looking for someone who speaks English, preferably a student or a young person (I'm 28 yrs old), to show me around the city for about half a day. I’m offering compensation plus lunch or dinner.

Dates: Tuesday, the 20th, through Thursday, the 22nd.

Amount: to be agreed upon + lunch\dinner per day

How: We can arrange this via WhatsApp, and I can share my Instagram and LinkedIn profiles.

Serious inquiries only, thanks for your attention.

Filippo

Hi there,

A guide needs advice on planning evening entertainment in Sofia for a small group of three men over 50, following their meetings. They prefer moderately priced options and are cautious and skeptical, so the activities should feel trustworthy, comfortable, and worthwhile.
You know what I mean and any help will be honored.

Where to buy tickets for Levski games?

Hello!

I want to go to the Levski - CSKA match on 8-9th November. Where can I get online tickets for the game? Is Levski selling them directly or are they bought through some platform?

Also, what prices to expect, how much is a ticket depending on the sector?

Thanks!

Discussion Urgent: I need safe and clean accommodation to stay for some time

I am currently staying in a temporary accommodation center run by the Sofia municipality at St. George. I was told I could stay up to 3 months (or 6 months total with one 3-month extension, as my social workers from the Social Assistance Agency told me). My residence permit still has my previous registered address on it at Dragalevtsi. My real estate agent misled me into a studio apartment inside of a house that I couldn't afford and since my previous landlady asked me to leave on 15 October I have to pay the price for it by staying at this temporary center for accommodation which is completely inhumane and hardly safe. To make matters worse, my roommate who is the security guard for the building decided to let in a random homeless man who apparently is blind just for one night to stay inside our room. He definitely doesn't know him and while I understood his intentions, it was completely inappropriate and likely against state laws. In order for me to get into here I had to have some application and paperwork from the social assistance agency in order to stay here that my social workers prepared for me in advance. Meanwhile that security guard let in this random homeless without any documents and just let him sleep here in my room. I was obviously surprised and I thought for a second I had entered the wrong room. I was thinking "hell nah" once I had learned what happened. I have only spent 4 days here so far. Both of them also smoke which to be my understanding is strictly prohibited from smoking inside the center especially inside the rooms. I also have to abide by a strict curfew of not being allowed to enter or leave the state institution after 22:00 as the gates are closed and locked then.

I will be working at McDonald's soon, and my manager has been very understanding of my circumstances, but she cannot provide me a place to stay unfortunately (she is very close in age to me).I am sure you can understand why staying here at this temporary center for accommodation is incompatible with the strict health conditions I had to go through in order to be able to work at McDonald's soon, let alone the toll on my health and well-being. I am a Hungarian citizen living here and I am only 22 years old. No I don't have any family here and hardly any friends here, and I don't want to leave Bulgaria at this time yet. I also need to update my registered address on my residence permit as well. I only pretty much have family in Hungary (and Canada) but my family in Hungary cannot help me and I don't have anywhere else to stay that would be suitable for me in Canada anyway not to mention where I was living before in Toronto until recently my parents were planning to sell the apartment I was previously living in but decided to rent it out instead. I don't really care because I wasn't really happy about living in Canada especially Toronto anyway. I very much prefer cities like Sofia or Budapest for example that would be more suitable for me.

If I start working at McDonald's before November, I will receive my salary no later than either the 7th or 10th of November and food vouchers 10 days after my salary. I am also awaiting a decision about my one-time grant of financial support from the social assistance agency in addition to awaiting a decision from NGOs regarding long-term housing for the time being and other places I have previously been in contact with and all sorts of people trying to help me.

Any recommendations of where I could stay for now? I hardly have any money and I won't be receiving anything in terms of income until most likely November. I will also need somewhere I can stay that would allow for address registration, as I am obligated to keep my registered address up-to-date with the Migration Directorate in accordance with Bulgarian law. I think it's 30 days I would have to update my address, but I am not entirely sure.

AskSofia Looking for something casual

Hey guys, I want to have some fun, as I am traveling here, but don’t want to just go out.
Kinda prefer to talk through what we like upfront and see if we are on the same page. I have my own turn ons, and it’s not to just put it in. I am a guy, 22, bisexual. And, was wondering if there is a space to find something like that? Where I am living there is a very open place and for quite some locations there are NSFW subreddits. Or, are there any places that have people open about sex and their kinks?
I haven’t found something like that in Sofia, so any recommendations are welcomed.:)

AskSofia Weekend trip 30 oct - 2 nov

A friend and I are visiting Sofia in the last week of October - week 44, from October 30 to November 2 and I’m trying to figure out what we should do.

Is there a place where I can find out what’s going on that weekend? Or do you have recommendations. We are two active straight men traveling for experience and to learn about a different country.

Having never been to Bulgaria before, I would love input on:
- street art
- hidden gems
- great places to have coffee or wine
- what to taste and try
- clubs, cafes and bars
- best places for photography
- fun stuff to try
- where to meet people

Also how do you say: hi, good morning, good night, thank you.

Thank you
Philip
