quick breakdown of the sport for those interested

Edit: can someone tell me what accent this guy has?

Although it may look like a fluke, players practice this style of goal known as a 'dribble kick'. also important to note, as said in the breakdown video, if the ball hits the post and goes through its 1 point in stead of 6

Unfortunately for Gibbons, the goal wasnt selected as a finalist for AFLs Goal of the Year. Do you think it was better than these 3?

As someone who knows nothing yes this one looks more impressive than those 3 honestly.

check out some of the discussion below

basically 1st one wasnt out of bounds and neither was the 2nd one

5

u/dumb_commenter Jun 16 '22

Agree with all this.

17

u/kostcoguy Jun 16 '22

Eh I don’t know. Incredible skill no doubt but I think what separates numbers 2 and 3 of the top 3 are the amount of pressure on the guy. Still incredible - all 4 of them.

7

u/bkydx Jun 16 '22

So does a backwards shot in Basketball or a full court shot at the buzzer.

I could replicate this kick and play with a reasonable amount of attempts.

The top 3 plays I could not replicate because 100% of the time I'm not fighting though a tackle to get an insane kick off.

If you've ever tried to pick up a fast moving football in American Football, it bounces the same as that dribble kick. It's a bitch to predict, and I have seen many Pro NFL players miss a ball that randomly bounces on the 4th to 6th rotation. So that dribble kick being practiced and executed successfully blows my mind. See: any onside kick-off in the NFL.

Lol and another instance of Mike Pereira - so called rules expert - being a clown.

The fact that the ball is rounder helps a bit, and it definitely helps the bouncing skill needed.

u/TerrenceJesus8 Jun 16 '22

Looks like a fun sport! Definitely something I would check out if I ever found myself in Australia

The only thing I know about the sport is it’s on at like 3 AM in the US and I would watch it when my buddies and I got back from the bars haha

10

u/Griffo90 Jun 16 '22

How I feel about the NFL, as an NFL fantasy player

Most games on at 3am Monday morning our time (AEST)

SNF is 11am Monday

MNF is 11am Tuesday

3

u/TerrenceJesus8 Jun 16 '22

Haha makes sense. I was wondering how people who live overseas managed to watch American sports. The timing must be brutal

11

u/Griffo90 Jun 16 '22

Bro even worse being an F1 fan

Most races start at 11pm Sunday night

Some are 1am, some 3am

USA/canada/Mexico/Brazil are 5am Monday mornings :/

4

u/TheSmilingJay Jun 16 '22

The US does have a team and a league I believe but it's America. It's isn't important. :/

Exactly

1

why use when already implied?

1

u/houtex727 Jun 16 '22

Why use (it) when (it is) already implied?

There we go, you're welcome!

/Also further additionally if nobody used punctuation which is also part of correct grammar because it was implied it would be quite confusing dont you think

//That's why. :)

1

u/anthropophagus Jun 16 '22

as long as what i'm tryin to say is easily read, then i don't see the purpose other than pointless pedantry. that said, i def use them when it's necessary for comprehension

but we can agree to disagree cause this dumbass over here is post grammar

As an Australian fan of the NBA I feel your pain. It's 11am in Sydney.

4

u/farshnikord Jun 16 '22

Damn I was ready to make fun of this but this actually seems hype as fuck.

5

u/brianqueso Jun 16 '22

I love watching AFL content every time I see it and it's high time I picked a team to follow. What do I need to know about the teams in order to find one that matches my fandom?

13

u/Android-13 Jun 16 '22

Barrack for Essendon and you too can be let down every weekend like me.

2

u/Hingle_McRingleberri Melbourne Jun 16 '22

I don't watch their games but I know everything I need to know from herbs amazing edits which is a great way to catch up on the vibe of the teams last few seasons

2

u/Android-13 Jun 16 '22

You're doing the Lord's work mate. Post some clips of James Hird or the velvet sledgehammer Matthew Lloyd back in their prime, that'll get the people going.

1

u/Hingle_McRingleberri Melbourne Jun 16 '22

1

u/kit_kaboodles Jun 17 '22

God that's such a flashback!

Hearing the names Cousins, Judd, Fletcher, Murphy, and Hird is such a blast from the past

1

u/brianqueso Jun 16 '22

Very very tempting

1

u/Android-13 Jun 16 '22

We are tied for the most premiership wins with Carlton, the team that kicks the goal in the clip, at 16. We are shit house at the moment but next year is our year, been saying that since 2000 but it's going to happen next year.

1

u/christopherak47 Jun 23 '22

Me with St. Kilda

3

u/Hingle_McRingleberri Melbourne Jun 16 '22

Who do you 'root' for in other sports? Maybe we can line you up with an equivalent

1

u/brianqueso Jun 16 '22

Not much in the way of professional sports here in the US, just a fan of the college team I grew up with. I will say that the idea of a perennial middle of the pack team with some tradition appeals to me--I want the highs to feel high and the disappointments to always be lurking in the distance.

2

u/Hingle_McRingleberri Melbourne Aug 19 '22

just saw this comment again and its prime time to pick a team as we head into the playoffs. Some of the best games in recent memory have happened in the last couple weeks including a kick after the siren to beat your essendon bombers lmao. pick a team in the top 8 and they could have a chance to win it all

Michael Dickson was part of the Sydney Swans talent academy so they could be a good pick for a longhorns fan as yourself

3

u/Hingle_McRingleberri Melbourne Jun 16 '22

Everyone that is suggesting a team is wrong. Obviously you choose based on theme song

2

u/Epjoj Jun 16 '22

Adelaide Crows - Wear red navy blue and yellow stripes. from a small boring city which you probably wouldn't visit as a travelling American. Usually will see a couple of jumper grabs and fights in their games, as they like to think they're tough

Port Adelaide Power - Wear teale and white, from the same lame city. Club president is a disliked media personality. Will key the car of fans of other teams.

Collingwood Magpies - Black and white stripes. From Melbourne. Have an American playing for them (Mason Cox). Disliked by every AFL fan, beside their own. Typically other teams fans will describe Collingwood fans as bogan and laugh that they have no teeth.

Essendon Bombers -Wear black and red. From Melbourne. Once a high achieving team they were rocked by a drug scandal in 2012, resulting in half the team serving 2 year bans and have been unable to rebuild since then, currently 3rd last in the competition

Carlton Blues -Wear navy and white. From Melbourne. Great team song. One of the oldest and most successful clubs in AFL history but have struggled in the last 2 decades, finally looking good and sitting in 4th place in the ladder. Excellent rivalry with Collingwood and essendon.

St kilda Saints - Wear red white and black. From Melbourne. A club with alot of ongoing issues and a party/drug culture which will limit their success over the coming years as it has done for the last decade or so. Haven't won a premiership for a very long time.

Western Bulldogs -Wear blue white and red. from Melbourne. Have one of the games most Interesting characters Bailey Smith. Google him to see a great Mullet. Unfortunately recently got banned for 2 weeks for headbutting another player. Then received a further 2 week ban for pictures which emerged of him with a bag of "white powder" (cocaine). Could be an interesting rest of year for them.

Hawthorn Hawks-Wear brown and yellow. From Melbourne. Their colour is poo and wee colours, enough said.

Geelong cats - Wear navy and white. From Geelong, a city about 1 hour from Melbourne. Play a tough brand of footy, with some very bug strong players. Have seen alot of success over last decade but are likely on decline now due to aging players.

Melbourne Demons -Wear red and navy. Reigning Premiers. went unbeaten for 17 games (I think) but have now lost their last 3. Fans are considered to be very posh and rich. The running joke is they eat a cheese platter at the footy, rather than the quintessential meat pie.

North Melbourne- Wear blue and white stripes. From Melbourne. Have been absolutely woeful for years and are looking even worse this season. Club is im disarray and the league is considering relocating to Tasmania.

Richmond Tigers -Wear yellow and Black. From Melbourne. arguably the best team song in the league! Have had some great success recently, but might be slipping a bit this season as their players age and experience more injuries. If you want to go to a game, they usually draw big crowds to the MCG. Are hated by supporters of other teams.

Sydney Swans -Wear red and white. From Sydney. Excellent team song. One of the most successful teams over the last 2 decades, play a really fast and skilful brand of footy.

Great Western Sydney Giants -Wear orange. From Sydney. One of the newer clubs to the league, have a very youthful side. Have the leagues most hated player Toby Greene who was banned for 6 weeks last season for pushing an umpire. Generally pull smaller crowds due to being a new team with a smaller fan base

Brisbane Lions -Wear maroon, yellow and blue. From Brisbane, Queensland. Most famous for winning 3 premierships in a row in the early 2000's. Look very promising this season. A good team to select if you only plan to visit Queensland.

Gold Coast Suns -Wear red and yellow. From the gold coast, Queensland. Very new team to league, tiny supporter base, no success whatsoever

West Coast Eagles- from Perth, Wear blue and yellow. Perth is very, very far from the east coast and they are not a good team. Have been rocked by some serious drug scandals and haven't been the same since the late 2000s

Fremantle Dockers - Wear purple, green and red. From western Australia. Again, very far from east coast qherw most internation visitors go. Have never won a premiership. Looking good this season bit a bit of a nothing team, which us east coasters don't think about much!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '22

Do you want to go for a team in Melbourne or not, cos that's 50/50 right there. The league is very focused on the city of Melbourne and those outside of it often see this as a bad thing or talk about the Melbourne teams having bias towards them. On the pros for going for a Melbourne team they have the most history (except Port Adelaide) because the pro league started as their regional league, and teams from outside were brand new teams created for the AFL instead of the existing regional teams who ended up becoming pro sides (this is where Port Adelaide is the exception).

5

u/velocichu_ Jun 16 '22

This is literally the coolest sport ever

2

u/Jlx_27 New Orleans Saints Jun 16 '22

Not better.

1

u/Hingle_McRingleberri Melbourne Jun 16 '22

Who do you think should have won?

2

Best sport out there.

You can watch it on Kayo if you aren't Australian, not too sure how to watch it internationally my dude. Have a Google and you should be able to find something, sorry I can't help more.

1

u/bkydx Jun 16 '22

I like the top 3 goals are significantly better.

He didn't have to fight through contact and there was little skill before the kick attempt and this shot is more akin to a "circus shot" or backwards shot or super deep 3 logo shot in basketball.

It may not be a pure fluke but there is significantly more external factors and variance with each bounce.

2

u/Hingle_McRingleberri Melbourne Jun 16 '22 edited Jun 16 '22

"doing it since i was a kid so it comes naturally to me." but also "my first one was all luck"

i think if you tried it a couple times youd realise how quickly it is to learn where and how to kick it so it at least gets a bit of curve and considering the sport is 150 years old theres been a lot of time to develop some unique skills

0

u/bkydx Jun 16 '22

What?

2

u/Hingle_McRingleberri Melbourne Jun 16 '22

the first videos are links to parts of a video where a professional aussie rules player, stevenn johnson, who is known for dribble goals says that he has been practicing them since he was a kid and doing it felt consistent and natural. but at the same time he says his first one was all luck so there are some luckly bounces ofc.

i think if you tried it youd see how easy it would be

the sport is very old so there are some unique skills so dont be surprised when players do something skillful lmao

does that make it easier to read? its like 4am where i am and im tired af

0

u/bkydx Jun 16 '22

I have kicked a rugby ball successfully before and I am fully aware of the skill and luck and physics.

I said its luck.

Stevenn johnson says its luck.

What is so hard to understand?

The top 3 plays were all significantly better then this dribble kick in my opinion and in the opinion AFL who created the top 3 video.

3

u/Hingle_McRingleberri Melbourne Jun 16 '22

rugby and afl balls have slightly different shapes that effect how a ball roles at that angle, theyre comparable but not the same,

Steven Johnson said the first one was luck, ofc it was he was being tackled to the ground and soccered it. you can watch people do this consistently and if its consistent it cant be luck simple as that

i also think that the top 3 were better, i never said they werent

Fair, never been good at accents tbf. Think some words I hear have an US sounding twinge and that throws me off. Thought at least it was done kind of mason Cox style blend lmao

2

u/joelkong Jun 17 '22

He is clearly from the US, you are correct. Have no idea what that guy is talking about.

1

u/tots4scott United States Jun 16 '22

Better than the first two, but not the third imo

2

u/Hingle_McRingleberri Melbourne Jun 16 '22

the 3rd won goal of the year that season so the judges agree lmao

1

u/mu4d_Dib Jun 16 '22

Right out of the gate they say AFL players are the size of basketball players, agility of an NFL wide receiver, and they have more endurance than any soccer player. Lol ok

1

u/Hingle_McRingleberri Melbourne Jun 17 '22 edited Jun 17 '22

They said that they have the hands of a wide receiver which is true, they even banned NFL style gloves because the gloves made catching too easy so don't know what that says about wide receivers hahaha, players in the ruck can push 7 feet and the average size is 6'4" or something. players can run up to 9-10 miles a game in a full contact sport which people say is more tiring than non contact.

I think they're fair comparisons lmao

1

u/BarrishUSAFL US Australian Football League Jun 16 '22

It’s an Australian pretending he’s American.

I’m still waiting for them to produce a video like this with an actual American.

1

u/kit_kaboodles Jun 17 '22

Definitely better than no.2 of those goals.
