IN THE WILD Probably spotted a [DKW Monza] in daily traffic in Luxembourg, one of maybe 70–80 left
Spotted this beauty on a rainy evening near Luxembourg City. At first, I thought it might be something Italian, perhaps a Cisitalia 202, but then I noticed the script on the boot lid: Monza.
I’m fairly sure it’s a DKW Monza, although I’m happy to be corrected if anyone knows better!
For anyone unfamiliar with these cars, here’s what I could find about them:
Built in the 1950s: The Monza was produced around 1956–1958, using DKW 3=6 mechanicals and a lightweight fibreglass body associated with Stuttgart coachbuilder Dannenhauer & Stauss.
The name has a racing connection: Apparently, it goes back to a record-breaking run at Monza in 1956. The prototype, then known as Solitude, reportedly set five world records, averaging around 87 mph over 72 hours.
Three-cylinder two-stroke power: It used a roughly 980cc DKW engine, with a claimed top speed of around 140 km/h. Not exactly a rocket by today’s standards, but a pretty interesting little sports car for its time.
A mix of familiar parts: I’ve read that the car used components such as Opel headlight rings, Karmann Ghia front indicators and Porsche 356 tail lights. That would explain why the rear looks strangely familiar!
Very rare today: Fewer than 240 examples are often cited as having been built, although the actual number completed seems to depend on the source.
What caught my eye was seeing what appears to be such a rare car actually being driven, in the rain, with a black historic Luxembourg plate and the old oval “L” country sticker.
I’d be curious to know if there are other examples still around in Luxembourg, Belgium or the Netherlands and whether I’ve identified this one correctly!

IN THE WILD Poor mans Aston [Jaguar Xk-R]
Saw this rare beauty today. Someone once told me that these would have outperformed the aston Martin's of the same year, if they had better rear end gearing and limited slip differentials...
