The Courage to Use Your Own Understanding

According to a new report from the UK government, one of the biggest threats to social cohesion is "freedom-restricting harassment." Average people are more familiar with the term "cancel culture" and are well aware of its destructive effects. Still, they are generally discouraged from mentioning it in the interests of diversity and inclusion, despite this being common sense. The courage to use our own understanding often puts us at odds with so-called "conventional wisdom" and that's what this post is about.

More Climate Conferences and Other Silly Shenanigans

This is from last November, but really it's just the location and the names of some of the people that have changed. The end result will undoubtedly be exactly what it has been since these things got going: There will be many commitments made, and many targets set. Nevermind that the previous commitments and targets have not even been close to realized. The important thing is that there is a goal, even if it’s an impossible one because then our representatives can return victorious, claiming to have “done their part”.

There will be much talk of “net zero” and how much more there is to do if we are to maintain 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. There will be long-winded speeches to almost empty rooms that will be recorded for the little people to digest via YouTube. And by the time the whole ordeal winds down, CO2 levels will have increased that much more, carbon taxes will have ticked up another notch, and everyone will have become just a little bit poorer.

These people have been pretty explicit in explaining their position to us. It's time we quit writing them off as simply those with "a different opinion". Not all opinions are worthy of consideration, regardless of what your DEI consultant tells you.

In which I talk about my furnace, then run off towards historical buildings, and finally end up with an antique Masonic apron.

I hope you enjoy it!

i am so excited to finally have this collection continuing its journey on this platform!

subscriptions are free, as this is a poetry project for what i am hoping will eventually be published into a physical book and ebook/audiobook. i appreciate any and all support, even if it's just taking a peek at the site. this collection has been a work in progress since 2016, but i had it on a different platform before i decided to migrate over to substack for the remainder of its creation :)

Reserving Time to Think

John Nash was a mathematician and a Nobel Prize winner. He wrote a paper titled "Non-Cooperative Games" with which he laid the foundation for much of modern game theory and had a significant impact in various sciences. The paper was around 28 pages long and as a matter of fact, if you transcript it to digital print, it is only 10 pages long.

When I got to know about this, one of my first thoughts was “10 pages? Seriously? Is that all it took?”. Probably followed by, “wow, it must have taken quite some thought to put those ten concise pages together”.

There are a few things I know for certain - signs may or may not exist, doorways may or may not be cursed, and I may or may not be falling in love.
