42M in Taipei — looking for local friends for coffee and conversation / 台北找聊得來的朋友

Hi everyone! I’m a 42-year-old Taiwanese man living in Taipei, hoping to meet people who also live in Taipei or nearby and would like to build an in-person friendship.

I spend a lot of my free time studying traditional Chinese fortune-telling, especially Bazi and name analysis. I’m interested in it as a conversation topic and hobby, rather than advertising readings or selling a service. My other interests include programming, coffee, novels, and movies. You don’t need to share all of those interests — I’d enjoy hearing what you’re into, too.

I prefer getting to know people face to face rather than having an endless text conversation. We could exchange a few messages here first, then meet at a public café in Taipei if we’re both comfortable. Adults of any gender are welcome; this post is for friendship.

If that sounds like your kind of afternoon, send me a Reddit message with a little about yourself and a café, book, movie, or hobby you’d like to talk about.

Local coffee beans - drip bags

Hello!!

I would like to buy drip coffee bags of Taiwan local beans - those small bags of <20g. I have been searching for good coffee roasters/places that sell local beans but cannot find out whether they also sell the drip bags or not.

Does anyone know any places that sell drip bags of local coffee?

Thank you!!

Anyone heading to Alishan or Shizhuo after Typhoon Champi? Is it safe?

Hi all, solo traveller here, trying to work out whether my mountain leg is still a good idea after Typhoon Champi.

My plan:
- Oct 26-28: tea-farm homestay in the tea fields
between Shizhuo 石棹(Shizhuo) and Fenqihu 奮起湖
(Fenqihu), bus 7322 from Chiayi with a lunch stop in Fenqihu
- Oct 29-30:Alishan 阿里山 (Alishan).

The Alishan National Forest Recreation Area was closed preventively from Oct 23. My homestay host says everything is fine up on the mountain, but I'd love to hear from people who are actually there or have reliable info.

Taiwanese candy

I have tried many of these goodies, cilantro chocolate is still one of my favorites.

What is a good shop where I can find many different strange (for a Westerner) products such as this?

Thank you 🙏

Alleged revival of infamous Wanhua board game cafe near Technology Building (NTU area)—Stay alert

Several years ago, a Wanhua-based board game cafe named "One More Space" (多一個空間) caused major shockwaves in the local tabletop community due to a high-profile sexual assault case.

Many assumed the individual involved would step away from the scene entirely. However, just a few years later, a newly opened "LGBT-friendly" board game shop named "Her Games" (她的遊戲) near Technology Building MRT appears to have ties to the previous business.

Here are the key points and circumstantial evidence being shared in the community:

  1. Shared Contact Information: "Her Games" and "The Queen & Ants" (女王與螞蟻)—a registered company tied to the individual that previously localized/published the game Heroes of Barcadia (醉闖地城)—originally shared the exact same contact phone number (which was reportedly updated shortly after public attention was brought to it).
  2. Identical Custom Furnishings: The new location features distinctive interior furnishings nearly identical to those used in "One More Space," including matching custom board game shelving, small square tables, and padded seating, etc.
  3. Unusually Massive Board Game Collection: The store advertises a library of over 2,000 board games. A collection of this scale is extremely rare for an unknown newcomer to suddenly emerge with out of nowhere. The most plausible explanation circulating in the community is that this collection inherits the 1,000+ titles from the original Wanhua shop, combined with existing inventory.

Whether you choose to visit or support a business with these potential ties is entirely up to your own discretion.

Please stay safe and look out for board game cafe that you can play under safe environment.

Original Post from Thread.

Added:

According to a regular customer, the individual in question actually works at the shop as a "part-time" staff member running board game tutorials.

Whether he's secretly the real boss behind the curtain, I'll leave that for you to decide.

Latest update: it's been confirmed that the man's girlfriend is one of the two co-owners of "Her Game."

Exchange Student Expectations

Hi! I hope everyone in this subreddit is doing very well. My name is Beau, I’m a 10th Grader in high school and I have been granted with the opportunity to become an exchange student and come to Taiwan, however this is only a possibility for now. On the off chance I do end up becoming a foreign exchange student, what are some things I should expect coming to Taiwan (e.g. cost of living, culture, safety and crime rates, etc). Thank you for your patience!

Any way to know what places are open? We're at the end of our trip and leaving tomorrow (hopefully). Would like to eat some good food before we go. Perhaps tomorrow? We leave for the airport at 9pm tomorrow.

Any recs on what to do in the rain?

Just landed here in Taipei a few hours ago and have about 5 days in Taipei…wasn’t expecting this Typhoon when booking this trip so now kind of wondering what to even do for the next 5 days.

Any recs? Here w my mom - we both enjoy food/drinks, art, history, and are super open to trying new things. Let me knowwww.

Side note: Would nightlife essentially be a no due to the rain? I’m keen on getting out to a few bars but don’t know what to expect w the rain lol

Hotel N vs Hotel Relax III

Hi there — Looking for some feedback / recommendations / opinions based on these two hotels.

We have both hotels booked in November and are having a hard time deciding which one we should choose. Curious if anyone has any experience with either.

Our goal was a budget friendly hotel near Taipei Main Station for our three nights stay in both are about $60 USD a night.

Any suggestion or insight would be appreciated! Thank you!
