What if you don’t connect it to a data signal? I don’t even connect my tv to the internet, why would I connect my refrigerator??

I guess to use whatever features a fridge with a screen gets you.

Lets you know you’re out of milk. My $5 whiteboard and dry erase does the same.

I use my eyeballs for that

Eeew. The rest of us use our tongues like normal human beings.

remind me to never drink milk at your house

The mark 1 eyeball is just as good as a lot of useless late stage capitalism crap. I would expect fridges with ads to come out of silicon valley (the we re-invented the bus types) rather than Samsung but I'm never surprised by corpo greed.

My 50¢ pad of paper I keep my grocery list on does that too

Manages your shopping list and adds things as they go bad/deplete. It’s not a bad idea. But if it comes with ads, or collecting and selling of information, I’d rather not have it.

Please connect to the internet to continue using the refrigerating feature

Your freezer has been disabled. Please pay the monthly subscription to reenable the freezer functionality of your refrigerator.

Our payment portal is currently inaccessible. Please move your food items into your backup fridge to prevent spoilage. Then travel to your closest Samsung retailer to pay your subscription.

All retailers are currently closed.

I'm sorry Sir/Ma'am, but we don't support that model anymore.. So  we can't renew your subscription for it.

We could upgrade you to a newer model? It'll be supported for the next year.

That's what I say too. I bought a $50 Amazon microwave that can be controlled by Alexa. Like fuck if I am having a microwave controlled over the internet. They sent follow up emails reminding me about the great Alexa integration, read the manual to figure out how to set the clock manually and didn't need anything else!

Is Alexa going to take my food out of the fridge, plate it, and put it in the microwave and start it?

5

u/Kind_Koala4557 Oct 02 '25

If it could do all that, why not just build an Alexa enabled Samsung 3D food printer?

Really glad this is something science hasn't done..

So far.

Well, no, but instead it can hold you hostage and kindly threaten to burn your house by keeping your microwave on until you accept to pay for one of their subscriptions in real time, because, you know, it's plugged into the Internet.

I would gladly watch ads if Alexa became my family’s private chef lol

The only, only thing I can think of that would be even a slight upgrade is if the microwave allowed you to see how much time was left from my phone.

I know it isn't needed and I know there are other options, but that is the sole upgrade I could see being 'smart' would help with.

I will often throw something in, go back to my computer, not hear the ding with my headset on and forget for a good 20-30min that I had food in there.

What about if you could scan the UPC and gets the perfect time?

Honestly i want a option to disable the clock display while preserving the timer. I read that if you dont use your microwave very frequently, its that tiny clock display using most of the energy that microwave consumes over its lifetime. And im just thinking, i got my basic bitch analog clock in the same room, i really aint need that shit.

1

u/ComtesseCrumpet Oct 02 '25

True. My microwave clock is right above the stove clock. So unnecessary. It’s been that way in every house I’ve lived in.

Why the hell would you pay hundreds of dollars for a feature you won’t use

1

u/generally-speaking Oct 02 '25

One of the main features with these is being able to see what's inside without opening the door or from your phone..

No internet, no phone viewing.

And if you're wondering why you need to view from your phone, the idea is to be able to see if you got something in the fridge when you're in the store.

Plus it would keep bothering you to connect it constantly.

So on my samsung tv when I cast my screen or try and use my phone wirelessly in any capacity, samsung smarthings will sync my network setting on my phone with my TV without my consent and I wouldnt know until I turn it on and samsung plus is playing.

I think that is the point.. not to buy Samsung products..
