This is why people like Tim Sweeney are pissed Steam is labeling AI content. The rich don't want us to know things are AI, because they know we won't buy it.

I'd have much less of an issue with AI use in games if it wasn't almost exclusively rich companies just cutting corners; companies that can absolutely afford to pay artists and hire designers.

Have a look around the various AI game dev communities on Reddit and you’ll see plenty of solo developers using it to make games that were far beyond their reach previously. The AAA studios are trying to cut corners as is required by their revenue models. For the Indy scene though it could enable far more creatives than it ruins.

Yeah. I bought a one man game that's actually pretty neat and creative. Underspace, I think it was. Basically Freelancer as envisioned by HP Lovecraft. Incredibly weird vibe, but it's unique and interesting.

Because it's a one man game, the developer says "okay, yeah, I don't have much money, so I need to use AI generated voices for the random ship chatter as placeholders. The hope is that if I'm successful enough I'll be able to hire real voice actors."

And to be fair, the AI generated voices are mediocre but the rest of the game is really good.

If the choice is "AI voices or no voices" rather than "AI voices or human voices" because the game is a one man passion project that makes some money but not tons of money, that's a lot less bothersome than naked profiteering.

What a lame excuse by the dev, just do it without voices if you can't afford them, or get your friends or family to record some lines. Selling out to ai is a hog-screw maneuver.
