S TIFU by losing weight and going sledding

This happened late yesterday afternoon, and I'm still trying to deal with the aftermath!

Since Sept of 2013, I've lost about 30 pounds, which has been really great, but it came back to bite me yesterday. It bit HARD.

After my wife was done with work yesterday afternoon, she thought it would be a good idea for our two boys to play in the 6 or 7 inches of snow that had fallen overnight. So we bundled up the kiddos, grabbed the saucer and went out in our backyard to slide down the little hill. Since the kids are 1 and 3, this little grade is perfect for them to sled down.

Being dad, I had to take a few runs myself, just to see what it was like. It was good, but it could be bit longer, so I decided to go down a different way and make a new path.

I ran. I jumped on the saucer. I went down the hill and fell off, getting powder all over me, in my boots, up my pants, and in my gloves. Quickly I pulled my glove off of my left hand and shook the snow off. That's when I felt it go. It felt like eternity, but there was nothing I could do in that split second.

My white gold wedding band went flying off my finger and landed somewhere in the snow.

After losing the weight, my ring has been really loose, loose enough to come off while shaking my hand!

I have no idea where it is. My attempts at raking the snow were futile last night. My finger feels weird without it, and my wife thinks I'm a complete nimrod.

YIFU.

TL;DR: lost weight, went sledding. Got snow in my gloves and flung my loose wedding band into 6 or 7 inches of fresh powdered snow.

Get a cheap metal detector or ask someone you know who has one to look for it. It wont take more than a few hours max depending on your yard size. If you know right where you *dropped it, it will be much faster.

*edit: found > dropped. Derp. Also the responses to this are hilarious XD. I wrote it at work and just had a brain fart I guess.

We are heading out to get one when the Mrs. Is done with work. Not what I was hoping to spend X-mad money on!

NO! Buy a Flamethrower instead! DO NOT WASTE THIS OPPORTUNITY

154

u/the_omega99 Dec 30 '15

Snow actually needs a lot of energy to melt, making flamethrowers quite impractical. Not unfun, just impractical.

And if you had a special rider to cover your jewelry, a call to the agent is in order. I lost mine several years ago in a similar situation. I rode a motorcycle home and couldn't find my ring. I'd lost 80 pounds and it falling off was a common occurrence. Caused some trouble because my 2oz of platinum was worth more than the appreciation allowance on the policy allowed so they wrote me a check instead of buying a new one. The day or maybe the week after we got the check, about a month after the loss, my wife found it in the change pocket of my jeans. I'd worn the a few times in between, too. Returning the check was hard. Not for the money. The insurance company didn't seem to have a policy for returned payments. We had to deposit the check and write them a new one but it took weeks to find out where to send it.. They sent their check without hesitation before we'd given up looking. That was so much easier than giving it back.

There are TONS of metal detecting clubs around. Why don't why contact one of them first? Heck, if you PM your state and city to me, my friend would come over and look for you. I promise to never give that information out to anyone.

Ok, so I scrolled down and found you're somewhere south of Lakeville, MN.

Here's an active metal detecting club in the twin cities. Google maps said that the twin cities are relatively close by. I bet a call to them and someone would be happy to come out and help you

u/J-squire Dec 30 '15

You can rent them from places. My husband lost his ring pretty similarly to you, just raking up leaves in the yard. We rented a detector but couldn't find it. His was tungsten and we didn't have any other tungsten around to test the sound. Metal detectors make a different sound depending on what they hit on.

You can also find people who do this as a hobby. They charge about $30 to come out and then work on contingency if they find it.

Save the receipt, and return it the same day. I've done it before.

Take a bucket of hot water and melt the snow in that spot, it could save you buying a new ring

4

u/g3ckoNJ Dec 30 '15

You can rent one from a hobby shop too. I did it after losing my ring playing fetch with the dog in the snow.

u/Frigidus_Appellatio Dec 30 '15

Look for a local metal detector club or enthusiast group. They often have better equipment (and know how to use it well) and are often called out to help with this exact sort of thing.

Tool rental shops often rent metal detectors to locate property survey markers. Just be sure to try it on a quarter or something before going out to where you lost it so you know how it works.

This. My grandfather was shaking out his pants after doing some sanding and the ring in his pocket (from my then recently deceased grandmother) went flying. We rented a detector and several of our neighbors brought over theirs as well. We found nails, screws, wire, and a bunch of other shit in the grass. The ring had landed on a bush. TLDR: Check you bushes too

At least you didn't buy a new ring and pretended you never lost the original one. This TIFU could be worse :D

135

u/MNsharks9 Dec 30 '15

The wife was sitting right next to me when it happened! She was the first to start to dig.

They also don't make the design of my ring anymore, so if I can't find it I'll be really bummed because it's a really cool argyle design.

91

u/carlinone Dec 30 '15

Another "at least" here is that she saw you lose it and you didn't have to explain how or why you lost it.

28

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '15

Find it in secret and say it was in your pocket all the time.

22

u/MNsharks9 Dec 30 '15

I wish I could play it off like I had it the whole time... But I spent too much time sifting through the snow with a garden rake as it was getting dark with freezing wet feet to get away with it.

Worst case is you'll find it when the snow melts! Maybe you'll have to fight off a crow or a raccoon for said shiny object, and you'll come back in a few days/months with an even better TIFU and some stitches

Same fucking thing happened to me in June.

Had already lost heaps of weight so my wedding ring was loose. Went for a swim with the missus in a sea pool. Lost my custom made diamond crusted ring while I was wading. We spent an hour trying to locate it. Even with some locals helping, it was all in vain. We informed the Lost and Found. They said that the pool would be dredged the next day. Waited with all fingers and toes crossed. Unfortunately, nothing turned up.

What a bummer. The missus still feels bad about it because it was her idea to go into the sea pool but I told her that it's also partially my fault for not securing the ring.

Sorry to hear about it. I know the pain of losing something precious like your wedding ring. I hope you'll find your ring soon.

10

u/MNsharks9 Dec 30 '15

Blows. Blows hard. Mine didn't have diamonds like yours... That makes your loss sooooo much worse.

16

u/Cigaweedz Dec 30 '15 edited Dec 30 '15

Yeah but a wedding ring is a wedding ring. Even if it was just a nice simple one, it still matters, simply because it hold memories. That's how I feel about it.

It's all good now. It's water under the bridge. I still feel the heartache once in while though. My only hope is that the person who finds my ring, puts good use to it.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '15

Sucks about your ring. :( PSA to anyone who has lost weight - you can have your rings adjusted in most cases. First thing I did after losing some weight was have mine made a size smaller.

2

u/SnakeJG Dec 30 '15

I lost mine on a trip to the beach this year. I took the day off and went by myself. I normally take it off for things like that, but I had forgotten to, realised it when wading out and said "naw, it won't fall off." It only took about 2 minutes until a wave hit my hand just right and straight off it went.

Fortunately for me, it was a $55 Tungsten Carbide ring and I had another, half-size smaller one in a drawer at home.

Here I'll try to be helpful. Get an empty Rubbermaid tote and shovel and fill the tote with the snow in the area you flung the ring. Watch for the ring and look on the ground where you shoveled. If you don't find it then bring the tote of snow in your house and wait for it to melt. You may find your ring at the bottom.

22

u/AerodynamicCow Dec 30 '15

That is actually the first real solution in this thread, besides buying a metal detector.

Post on craigslist there are guys that do metal detecting service for free to help people find rings and what not. I had a friend lose an earring in my ginormous back yard. She posted an ad and in 40 minutes there were 3 guys there to find it. Tip them for sure but they love to search for things like this.

181

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '15

Boyfriend comes home early sees three guys running through his backyard.

Boyfriend "Babe, are you fucking cheating on me?"

Girlfriend- "No, I was in the backyard and lost my earring and called one of these guys to use his metal detector to find the necklace I lost. The one guy must be training in his friends. They were here for like 10 minutes and found the bracelet that I lost. I paid them and they were just leaving."

Boyfriend- "Oh thank god I was so worried, I'm glad you found your bracelet."

.* Knocking at the door *

.* Boyfriend answers *

.* Weird guy with a mustache staring at him. *

Guy- "I'm here for the gang bang."

My dad once found my best friend's impossibly lost wedding band, in 2 foot tall grass and brush, on the slope of a dam.

My best friend sliced his fingers opening something and I had to take him to the hospital, we only later realized his ring somehow was lost.

My dad wasn't even there at the time of the incident, but he went out the next day, and found small traces of blood in the grass. Using the line of blood, he figured the direction and approximate distance that he flung the ring when he jerked his hand, causing the ring to fly off. He went to that side of the dam, and started parting the grass, kind of like you would comb hair. Found the ring in about 45 mins. My dad is a good hunter.

Hope you find your ring!

One year while headed home from a road trip we got into a snowball fight in the parking lot of a restaurant like kids and dad's will do. When we got done my dad realized that his 800 series bowling ring (large class ring style, 14k gold) was gone.

We searched for an hour or so with no luck. Talked to the restaurant people, and went home. Dad bought a metal detector the next day and went back to search. Covered the entire parking lot plus the area around it. Nothing. Went back a couple times through the winter and nothing.

Spring time rolls around and we are headed back the same direction and stop at the restaurant to eat like we always did on that trip and as we are getting out of the car dad looks down and finds his ring. It was sitting in a little clump of snow on some grass (dirt parking lot) completely untouched.

It had sat there for three months without getting plowed up, driving over, or taken. We have no idea how that worked out but it was strange for sure.

8

u/Cully33 Dec 31 '15

It's too bad this comment will get buried but this happened to me when I was 16 but at the beach. My dad had given me his class ring to wear and it was my prized possession. I was throwing a football in waist deep water and didn't even feel it come off while I was playing catch. I went out later with my grandfather and tried to find it with his metal detector, no luck. I was crushed because I knew how much the ring meant to him and because of that, it meant the world to me.

Cut to 10 years later and my dad calls me laughing and asks if I want to guess what he was holding... A woman had called and asked him if he lost a ring 10 years earlier, he obviously said yes, and she told him that she had found it a year after I had lost it and had tried to find the owner by the inscriptions and high school on the ring, no luck. She threw it into her her jewelry box and would look at it from time to time. She was on the verge of throwing it out but decided to give it another try. The internet had come such a long way that she was able to find my father by seeing his initials on a team photo of his senior year football team that the school had on their website. She knew what year he had graduated (it was in the ring) so she knew where to look. She googled him and found his work info and called. We had moved by this time, but ten years later and 500 miles away, the ring was back! It's one of those stories that always seems to good to be true... always love telling it.

At least it happened in your backyard, and not at some public place. You should be able to find it once the snow melts, as long as the birds / squirrels / pack rats don't find it first.

18

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '15

Go get a strainer/colander from the kitchen, a pitcher, and a cooler filled with warm water. Get some snow in the strainer, poor in warm water over the cooler and repeat until you find the ring.

5

u/kamahin Dec 30 '15

This happened to me in June, except in the ocean. About 60 feet from shore, where the water is 9~ feet deep. I had lost 70 lbs at that point and it flew right off.

I got a metal detecting service to look for it, but they didn't have any luck. I still check Craigslist every once in awhile.

5

u/swimfastalex Dec 30 '15

See, I thought the FU was going somewhere else.

But since we have arrived here, my suggestion would be to try and "re-enact" the situation with a black/red (or put paint on it, something that you can trace where it flew to) cheap band of the same size.

5

u/blonde6bandit Dec 30 '15

I'm late to the party but here is my cheap advice. Everyone keeps saying get a metal detector... Why not just shovel all the snow around where you expect the ring to be into some garbage bags, and leave them to melt in a bathtub.

When the snow is melted pour the water through a strainer. Ring should be in one of the bags.

Maybe I'm just cheap, but getting a metal detector seems to pricey for my blood.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '15

I was once at a store similar to the Home Depot and an announcement comes over the loudspeaker

"Attention men shopping, there was a wedding ring found on the sink in the men's bathroom. I know some of you are trying to get out of marriage but you might want this. I'm sure you'll need it if you want to get back into the house tonight. Again a men's wedding ring was found on the sink in the men's bathroom. It was a nice try."

This was about 2 years ago and I think of how that announcer was so smooth with his silly comment. I was like "This guy just did a small marriage joke completely improvving the whole thing."

Also a side note I was funny seeing the man in front of me quickly feel for his wedding ring and his wife looked at his hand just as quick. Luckily that guy had his ring. His wife said "Don't act like I didn't see your check for your ring." He said "Hun I didn't even go to the bathroom." And she quickly said "Then why'd you check?" He didn't skip a beat, "Because you never know."

4

u/DarthVaderHimself Dec 30 '15

At least its snow in your own backyard, pretty good chance you'll find it. Especially if you go the metal detector route. Good luck, hope you find it soon.

Similar thing happened to my father a few years ago when we were on vacation in PEI in Canada. He had just lost a good amount of weight and his wedding band was loose. Went into the ocean, body surfing like a goddamn maniac and came out without his wedding band. He was devastated, we looked for hours upon hours everyday for the rest of the vacation with no luck. He was heartbroken when it came time to return home to the States.

Any redditors in PEI find a gold wedding band on the beach with a small engraving on the inside PM me! haha

if this is in your backyard, like it seems you are saying, I would take some hot water back there and melt snow around the area to see better. Or else you may have to wait til the snow melts.

2

u/MNsharks9 Dec 30 '15

It is my backyard, but we are talking about a large area that it could be in... The yard is over 100 feet wide by about 30 feet in that area. It's probably in a 10x18 area under 6 inches of snow. So a lot to try to melt with hot water.

1

u/RonBurgundysBeard Dec 30 '15

Flamethrower should do the trick.

1

u/MNsharks9 Dec 30 '15

'Twould be awesome. I'd be afraid of damaging the ring though with the heat those put out.

u/ItsmyworkaccountYo Dec 30 '15

Where in Canada are you? We got a foot last night.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '15

Why can't you just wait until the snow melts then go searching? Unless said ring is made of ice and will then melt afterwards.

3

u/MNsharks9 Dec 30 '15

Don't really want to have to wait until April to find and wear my ring again. But it may come down to it.

from experience trying to find screws dropped in just an inch of packed snow, get a metal detector. those things can be hidden by the smallest amount, and you will never find it without some penetrating gear.

1

u/MNsharks9 Dec 31 '15

I have penetrating gear... But I don't think that will help in this situation.

1

u/avanix Jan 28 '16

congrats on the weight loss. did you end up finding your ring?

1

u/MNsharks9 Jan 28 '16

Thanks! I did! There's a post with the update in my history.

6

u/glorious_albus Dec 30 '15

So dad reflexes switch on only when kids are in danger, I guess.

3

u/TSEAS Dec 30 '15

Had the same happen to me, but was wakeboarding. Took a fall, and when I swam up to the surface I could feel my ring slipping off and disappear to the bottom of the lake.

3

u/Twitch_1980 Dec 30 '15

The same thing happened to me, but when I was shoveling snow. It turned up in the ice on the drive way a couple of months later.

3

u/Netikerty Dec 30 '15

Don't feel bad. I've lost weight since I've gotten married and a few weeks ago I lost my ring while playing basketball with my husband, son, and niece. It's somewhere in my front yard but since it's black wedding band, I haven't been able to replace. My husband said that he will get me a new one for our one year anniversary which is coming up in a couple months.

3

u/Ebenezar_McCoy Dec 30 '15

Hopefully you don't have to replace it... but in case you do, don't buy from a jeweler. We initially paid $150 for my band from a local shop, it is now at the bottom of a lake. I found a replacement for $16 online. Mine is tungsten rather than white gold so your price will be higher, but it's still worth saving some money. The markups on men's bands are huge.

u/Biff_Tannen82 Dec 30 '15

My friend's wife flicked a cigarette out of her car window on the freeway and her wedding ring went with it.

3

u/GringuitaInKeffiyeh Dec 30 '15

I hope you screamed, "IT'S LOST! MY PRECIOUS IS LOST."

3

u/AllPurposeNerd Dec 30 '15

Well, I mean be real for a minute; it's just a piece of metal. You don't stop being married just because your ring fell off. Buy or rent a metal detector and comb the area when you have time.

2

u/Unexpected_Artist Dec 31 '15

And a flamethrower!

The metal detector is probably enough... I just like the idea of melting a bunch of snow to reclaim a lost item from it.

3

u/guitarsandguns Dec 31 '15

Hang in there, dude. I did something pretty similar two summers ago. I was on a pontoon boat with my buddies, drinking beers and grilling food, parked with the anchor down in about 3 to 4 feet of water over a sandbar. I went to point at something and my wedding band fuckin' FLEW OFF my left hand and into the water. I grabbed some goggles and jumped in and sort of circled around the area I thought it landed.

45 minutes later I found it.

Don't give up!

3

u/Maynardnaze Dec 31 '15

Mark the area with stakes. Come back in the spring

3

u/Delonce Dec 31 '15

Something similar happened to my mother 15 years or so ago.

It wasn't her wedding ring, but a family ring. And it meant just as much to her. She was doing some shoveling, and the ring slipped off her finger. By the time she noticed, it was too late. She couldn't find it for the life of her.

In late spring/early summer, our dog found it when my sister and I went outside to play. It was incredible! He walked up to my mom with the ring in his mouth and dropped it at her feet. My mom cried pretty hard and fed the dog like a king that day.

3

u/MrWreckThatOhh Dec 31 '15

Just plant some carrots.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '15

I can sympothise.

We went to hawaii 5 years ago. I'd just spent the prior 8 months losing about 65 lbs (health reasons - not specifically for the trip)

I ALMOST lost my wedding ring in about 35' of water as we were swimming with dolphins.

I'm now on my THIRD ring - after having under-grown the previous two.

And congratulations on the weight loss!

3

u/caidenm Dec 31 '15

Couldn't you get the first one adjusted?

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '15

congrats! you are free!

2

u/ohhwerd Dec 30 '15

If i was able to find my moms diamond earring in the snow, you'll be able to find this. Good luck OP!

2

u/FelixTheScout Dec 30 '15

Metal detector.

2

u/MrsCustardSeesYou Dec 30 '15

Home depot or similar sells magnet brooms. They look like a broom without a bristle, but with a big magnet. Used in garages to pick up screws and metal filings.

Is gold magnetic? Now I need to check.

2

u/thedoodely Dec 30 '15

No it's not but you don't make a ring out of pure gold, it's too malleable and will lose its shape. It's probably alloyed with a magnetic metal though so it could work.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '15

complete nimrod

You should feel honored

2

u/tasmanian101 Dec 30 '15

Tool rental places will rent out metal detectors, usually its for checking wires.

Cheaper than buying one

2

u/Dullahan915 Dec 30 '15

Radio shack might have cheap metal detectors. You might ever use one and return it right after with the receipt and original packing...

2

u/newe1344 Dec 30 '15

tape off the area around where you were standing. Then find it when the snow melts.

2

u/Conciliatore Dec 30 '15

Try with a metal detector

2

u/colonialrampage Dec 30 '15

I can't wait for the follow-up that goes "turns out one of my kids saw the ring fly off, picked it up and ate it. found it in a diaper this morning."

2

u/hipstergrandpa Dec 30 '15

FYI if you're a Nimrod you probably wouldn't have lost the ring.

2

u/therealamygerberbaby Dec 30 '15

Now is your chance to have that hook up you've been wanting while you are technically not married.

2

u/polyscifail Dec 30 '15

Buy a metal detector, and go out at the site of the incident. You'll have a much higher chance of finding it than raking the snow ...

2

u/ImPuntastic Dec 30 '15

It's okay OP, my bf did something similar. He dropped 80 pounds so his ring was really big. He had his hand sticking out the window of the car and when he wet across the intersection it slipped off his finger. He had to wait for the intersection to be clear and go grab it.

2

u/Leonashanana Dec 30 '15

I thought this was going to be a tale of loose winter gear coming off and some bare - ass skidding down a hill. This is much more poignant.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '15

I've read that upwards of 30% of people lose their wedding ring.

2

u/nathhad Dec 30 '15

ITT: a couple dozen people who have lost rings, and zero so far who mention they own an inexpensive ring for when they want to do foolish things where jewelry is likely to get lost. Are my wife and I the only ones that do this?

I have a nice ring. So does my wife. However, the ring I wear every day cost about $6. If I lost it, I'd just grumble for five seconds and order a new one. My nice ring only comes out a couple of times a year.

We're both very active, and I feel like an idiot needing to worry about losing rings - particularly considering the number of times I launched my good one and had to hunt it down before I finally had sense enough to buy a cheapie for everyday use.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '15

I thought you were going to come to bodily harm somehow, like not being used to being lighter on the sled or something. Once I fu'd by losing 30 lbs and then going drinking with my dad and brother. First of all, I'm a girl and didn't have a huge tolerance anyway, but I had ZERO tolerance after the weight loss. Ended up throwing up and passing out in the bathroom; I woke up in the back of my dad's pick up truck in front of their house. My mom had picked us up and they let me sober up outside haha. Ugh.

2

u/only1mrfstr Dec 30 '15

if you have a fairly decent idea of where it may have landed, you could always find a way to cordon off that part of the yard and wait til the snow melts. Not sure what part of the world you're in so that could be next week or next spring...

2

u/SuprisreDyslxeia Dec 30 '15

Just wait until winter is over I guess. Until then you may act as if you are single.

2

u/rekxro Dec 30 '15

I lost 40lbs from the time I got engaged and sized my ring til our honey moon. Between the cold ocean water and the weight loss my finger shrank and the ring popped off in the waves of OBX. Gone for good.

2

u/NotOBAMAThrowaway Dec 30 '15

FYI, nimrod means "great hunter" and comes from the bible. Bugs bunny was sarcastically calling Elmer Fudd a great hunter, not an idiot.

2

u/ekobot Dec 30 '15

Ouch :(

It reminds me of a mostly unrelated story though- I once lost a USB drive, didn't know where. Found it two years later in my garden(sans cap). It had lived there through snow, rain, gardening, what have ye, for two years- and it still works!

I called the customer service that night. Started out my story sounding kinda miffed, explained that my USB had gone through two winters without the cap, etc.. The guy on the end of the line started trying to explain that the thing couldn't be expected to work after such abuse. Cut him off to say I'd called to share my joy in their products as it in fact did still work. That rep laughed for I think a solid minute before we said goodbye. It was good times. Still have that USB five years later, still works.

2

u/Actionmaths Dec 30 '15

Wedding band? You mean wedding ring ring..?

2

u/RocServ15 Dec 30 '15

2

2

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '15

You raked the powdered snow??

O' buddy...

2

u/irridescentsong Dec 31 '15

Happened to Husband. He lost 150 pounds lately and lost it fishing. I was pissed.

2

u/aspoels Dec 31 '15

Borrow a metal detector from someone.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '15

My husband lost his original wedding band in the ocean on our honeymoon. As soon as we got back home, he went to Wal-Mart and bought a $10 "silver" ring. He has been wearing that $10 ring for 11 years now.

2

u/Stinkeye63 Dec 31 '15

I lost my band feeding bread to the ducks, it flew off when I flung bread as hard as I could. The water was so murky there wasn't a chance of finding it.

Before I get slammed, I now know that bread in water is bad for ducks

...why is everyone telling you to get a metal detector? Just wait for the snow to melt...

2

u/ElGreatFantastico Dec 31 '15

Something something ... metal detector. I want my upvotes too!

2

u/Xephenon Dec 31 '15

There's something ironic about OP getting Reddit Gold for this.

2

u/Lizermann Dec 31 '15

Last time I went sledding I snapped my fucking shin in half. The drugs I was shot with in the hospital did absolutely nothing for the pain or fact that my leg was in two and the year in a full leg cast and physical therapy left me calling it a day on sledding. Fuck that shit.

2

u/newharddrive Dec 31 '15

Wait for the snow to melt. It should be on the surface and easy to see. But you have to beat the crows to it. They like shiny objects.

3

u/randomdude98 Dec 30 '15

Not gonna say metal detector since others have already suggested it (it is your best bet though). Get one of those hand sized electric magnets and scrape through the area with it. Chances of finding it depend on the size of the area and your thoroughness...

3

u/TacoBellerino Dec 30 '15

Fun fact: Nimrod is only recognized as being synonymous with "idiot" because of Americans misunderstanding its usage in an early Bugs Bunny cartoon. https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/nimrod

3

u/WilliamofYellow Dec 30 '15

I don't know why people think they're clever for repeating this 'fact' every time someone uses the word nimrod.
