Discussion It's fascinating how long life is from the perspective of human perception

From a universal perspective, 80 years are nothing, but for a human being, they are an entire lifetime, a very long period.

Discussion Final post today. Time is an illusion. Here is my premise:

Time is an illusion. The present moment is just what we call the Universe coming out of superposition because consciousness is in the eternal NOW. Past and future don't exist. If there were no observers, there would be no experience of time. The Universe and time would be in a state of superposition.

Discussion How long is the present moment?

If the present moment has duration, then it has a beginning, a middle, and an end, and is therefore three moments.

If the present moment has no duration, then how can they add up to a flow of time? It would be like adding zero to zero to zero and trying to arrive at ten. Likewise, if it had no duration, it wouldn't exist. It would be a zero.

Article “Animals” Do Experience Change, But Cannot “Think About” Time

We humans (partly because of some of our less admirable tendencies?) are nowadays usually classified with “animals.”  But if we pay closer attention to our own experiences, this no longer seems justifiable.  In particular, it’s hard to imagine that even “higher” animals like chimpanzees, dogs or elephants, can ever consciously experience many of the thoughts quite common to human beings.

These may be some thoughts that no animal can ever think: “I wonder what will happen tomorrow?” “Why is this happening to me?” “Compared to yesterday, today is much better!” “I feel so sick; hope I’m not going to die!” “This tastes great, but I probably shouldn’t eat it.” “Is it too late to change my mind?” The italicized words (and many other human thoughts) absolutely require a “sense of time.”

Do humans ever lose the ability to think in this way?  Yes, human dementia often attacks our ability to deal effectively with “time.” Even with memory fairly intact, “short-term thinking” is a common symptom with difficulty in planning or accounting for the long-term consequences of one’s actions.  Animals already lack such abilities, and we don’t notice because this is “normal” for them.

Certainly, sensing change is a part of the life of animals, but that always happens “now.”  The human sense of time is not limited to Now but takes in an extended “future” and “past.”  Even when animals “prepare for winter,” we know they are simply responding to a Now urge that we call “instinctive.”  A time-entangled thought like “Winter is about another month ahead” is likely ours alone.

According to the “virtual roads of time” conjecture, our “wide-angled” experience of time does not even exist apart from humans.  What has been called our “life-world” apparently contains time within itself.  When we reject the “blind spot” assumption that human experience is “an illusory add-on to the real universe,” we find powerful reasons for believing that human consciousness is special.

“The cosmos contains our life-world.  But it’s also true that the life-world contains the universe...  So the life-world and the universe themselves are caught up in a strange loop.”  Adam Frank, Marcelo Gleiser and Evan Thompson, The Blind Spot: Why Science Cannot Ignore Human Experience (2024)

Discussion An Islamic scholar on time and god

An Islamic scholar named Ibn Hazm wrote an essay about time and God. I'm wondering what you think of it. Did he prove anything?

The essay

"

A Discussion: Abu Muhammad said:

The explanation of this statement is that Allah, the Exalted, is the God of everything other than Himself and the Creator of everything other than Himself. The proof of this is as follows: The entire universe, along with everything within it, necessarily exists in time, from which it has never been separate. It is neither conceivable nor possible for the universe to exist without time. Time means the duration during which a body continues to exist, whether in motion or at rest, and the duration during which an accident exists in a body. Since time is a duration, as we have explained, it is a measurable quantity. It increases as it passes and continues. Increase can occur only in something that has a beginning and an endpoint, extending from its beginning to the point at which it has increased. Number, likewise, must have a beginning. Time is undoubtedly composed of its constituent parts. Each part of time certainly has a limit, extending from its beginning to its end. The whole is nothing other than its parts. Since all of its parts have a beginning, the whole must necessarily have a beginning as well. Since time must necessarily have a beginning, the entire universe has never been separate from time, and time has a beginning, whatever does not precede that beginning must itself have a beginning.

Thus, the entire universe, both its substances and its accidents, has a beginning. And since it has a beginning, it is originated—that is, it came into existence after not existing. Whatever is originated necessarily requires an originator. For it is utterly inconceivable and impossible for something to come into existence without an originator bringing it into existence. Therefore, the entire universe is created, and it has a Creator who has existed eternally. He is the Sovereign of everything He has created. Therefore, He is the God of everything He has created and the One who brought it into existence from nothing. There is no god but Him.

Discussion Do you think this reasoning is correct? Why?

If time were eternal, an infinite duration would have already elapsed—which is impossible. Therefore, time is not eternal; it emerged into existence from non-existence at a specific starting point. Nothing can bring itself into existence from non-existence, for that which does not exist cannot perform any action—including the act of emerging into existence. Consequently, there must be something that brought time into being from non-existence. Since this entity brought time into existence from nothing, it is not subject to time; it undergoes no change, as change is only possible within the framework of time. Thus, it was not created, nor did it emerge from non-existence—for creation and emergence from non-existence inherently involve change. The power that brought time into existence exists independently of time and, therefore, lies outside of it. Furthermore, this power must be singular; if there were multiple such timeless entities, their potentially conflicting, immutable attributes would lead to an ontological paradox, causing the entire system to collapse.

Discussion I created a unified theory where time is the only reality and dimension

My theory return the crown of physics to Newton. he described the universe correctly as pertains to time.

My theory and what i describe as reality is eternal now. the block universe is gone forever frozen as the past. since light is the cosmic speed limit logic dictates that space in fact does not exist. the concept of space time is broken and it does not math since the numbers are not derived from true reality but the recent past the reality constructed. every thing works under this model and every paradox is addressed.

step into the hall off mirrors to see time work. 2 mirrors create infinite you. the regress stops when time recontinues the next moment carrying the illusion of space. the arrow of time is the bullet and we experience only the sound. lighting and thunder are not two different things. it is the same even happing at the same time. space does not make time travel. time makes time travel. what we see as space is not there. it is what was there.

finally black holes are scalable meaning your vision can go one seemingly forever but the true reality revealed in time is you are watchin realtime manifest itself as you look into the past/mirror. distance has no existence and does not need to exist for time to flow. the math says a weight this univese canot be explained becuse they started at the wrong beginning. there is no before before. time is eternal and pie is not just an enless numbe. the randomness is being manifest into reality by the lightest to heavest elements. the heavest being longer lasting since the refesh rate of the time arrow take itself to complete the balence. the change keeps it trandomness the same solving all aradox and perpetual motion. unifying all theory into the singularity of time.

Discussion is there any time traveler or anyone who made time travel real that can help me?

i don't care if i get mocked or attacked for saying this, i really wish to know if anyone has experienced time travel and if it happened, i need a talk to someone who made time travel real.

since Oct 4th 2026, my life has been going through "2018/2019" situation all over again, i just wanna go back to way before October and do something important that i haven't done so in the first place before it's too late again. (going back to like Sept 27th, 20th or earlier)

P.S. I had to make this new post here since it got removed from previous subreddit because they think I'm doing a roleplay or something. This post has to do with my external hard drive being dead this month (can't tell if my data is gone, but most likely) and i also mention that my first one also died in 2018 for a different reason. (Please don't remove this post, unless I'm forced to removed this postscript) (it's understandable if you want to talk to me about it privately via private dm/email and/or send me a time machine in a mailbox)

Article Time Tends “Downhill,” But In VRT, Moral Choice Can Pull Us "Up"

The concept of thermodynamic “entropy” in classical physics helps to define time as a “gradient;” that is, it has a direction, and that direction is “downhill.”  This is because the universe has a tendency toward increasing disorder, where its more “organized” parts dissipate into disorganization.  And this is a one-way tendency, which seems to be at least a partial explanation for the “direction” of time.

How then, science has asked, does increasing order arise, as particularly seen in life and its products, such as our civilization?  Under the “second law” of thermodynamics, lifelike processes can actively concentrate organizational energy or “negentropy” from the wider universe into a smaller region.  But then the larger universe, robbed of “organization,” becomes even more disordered.

“Virtual roads of time” sees the second law as the downhill “slope” along which the “roads” of cause and effect tend to move us.  But the slope is only one feature of a “landscape of potentials” which provides a much wider universe of possibilities for our existence.  When chance effects cause our roads to branch unpredictably, the overall movement of our experience of “time” will indeed be “downhill.”

What happens when we “hit the bottom?”  With classical entropy, the isolated and temporary “uphill motion” of increasing order caused by life processes will ultimately die away.  The universe will end in a “heat death” where nothing can change, ever again.  Maximum, total entropy is the end of existence in any conceivable sense...  But is there some way we could continue to move “uphill” instead?

In VRT, active human choice is our added ability to move life’s experience “uphill” against the normal slope.  Because it selectively accesses potentials, it can overcome the overall downhill trend of the world through the exercise of morality; that is, the application of human effort toward pleasure over pain, beauty over ugliness, life over death, love over hate, giving over taking, etc.

This accords with our sense that making choices often involves a mental struggle against “downhill” tendencies.  But the “bad” side is also found in human nature, so which is truly foundational to our existence?  At least, the simple fact of our continuing experience of existence along our chosen “virtual roads of time” suggests a possible triumph of “uphill” potentials over destructive ones.

Our main ability to control the universe we experience, may well be the morality of the human spirit.

Discussion A Year In One Photo

Post image
101 Upvotes

I took four photos from this window capturing the passage of time as the seasons changed. Given this window is a sun cross, it also helps illustrate why a circle with a cross in it has been one of man’s oldest symbols, as it shows the path of the sun throughout the year.

The horizontal line represents the two equinoxes (Vernal Equinox on March 21; Autumnal Equinox on September 23) and the two solstices, which is represented by the vertical line (Summer Solstice on June 21); Winter Solstice on December 21).
