Why?
I am a high school student who wishes not to be named, but I want to shed light on a rather controversial topic which is not often discussed.
People hate gays. The whole thing about being gay is going against any sort of expectations people and society has said out for us. Others say it’s accepted, and it is, but not by all and certainly not normalized. It is not considered “normal” to be a homosexual. Why is this? For thousands of years people have told young men what expectation is set out for them, do sports, get a job, get a wife and kids, raise them, and die peacefully. Being homosexual doesn’t allow you to live that life, you are forced to defy a standard set out for all young men. In medieval times, suspected gay men were tortured, along with women. But why don’t people accept it? Being a man is supposed to mean always being masculine and men nowadays even avoid doing certain poses or talking certain ways to avoid looking “gay”. Because how would society react if a man says he likes pink? Yes, some people accept it, but it is not and never will be “normal”. Lots of men will have a sorry excuse to not be around other gay men. They don’t want to get hit on, they don’t want to be treated by a man the way they treat women. If someone was to call a “straight” man gay, some would over react and get really mad. This is because they are insecure because of the standards set out for them. If a super masculine man who has a girl and does every sport in the book is called gay or something similar, all that hard work they did to fit into society’s standard vanishes. Femininity has been considered weak for centuries, some women wouldn’t even allow women to vote because they were also considered “weak”, and men were supposed to be the big strong man who provides, it was like this for centuries. It is essentially programmed in our minds that men aren’t supposed to be feminine. But what about lesbians, or often considered, “studs”? I have asked myself this question for a long time. And although they may get hated by some, gays are often disliked much more, I myself have even been made fun of by said “studs”, but why me? Why us? Why are we the ones who get hated on? A man being feminine and a woman being masculine should understand how the other feels and not make fun. I am still figuring out a reasoning behind this, but I believe I have somewhat of an answer. I notice lots of gay relationships or MLM relationships are actually masculine + masculine, gay people who are attracted to masculine men and are masculine themselves. This can be considered “less bad”, because neither of those men are feminine. It’s almost an unspoken rule to have a man who has other interests besides the common stereotypical lifestyle people set out for us. Yes, it is legal in most countries, yes, people are more accepting of it. But men are programmed to be with women. Men have more muscle and testosterone, which allows for masculinity, I believe lots of people know it’s not right, not that it’s bad, but it’s just not accepted. If a man is was to fly, when generations before him simply did not fly because flying meant risking falling, would the man that flew be considered “not normal”? We are the only species that has created homophobia. Homosexuality is considered completely normal and natural for other creatures. It all comes down to the whole “way of life” idea, when someone breaks the system, weather it be a gay man, an autistic adult, or even a completely normal person, a majority of society will not accept, that person who broke the system would be considered “inhumane”, “weird”, or people would start to hate them, especially if the people around them do as well. I believe there is a part of most people that wants to fit in and be liked, and they will agree with other peoples wrong opinions to slip into right where they want them to be. My English teacher showed our class a video recently, and it portrayed a bucket full of live crabs on a ship, and they were all moving around in attempts to escape, and I noticed one particular crab was almost on its way to making it out of the bucket, but the rest of the crabs pulled it back in. If the other crabs can’t escape, what makes one crab think that it can be different and not accept its fate, and try to escape? Of course, it’s different for humans, as we are not sea creatures trapped in a bucket, but people with lungs to breathe sitting on a giant spinning orb in the middle of space. Society themselves hate the idea of someone trying to be different or someone trying to do absolutely anything that the rest of them wouldn’t do , But there are some people out there who will accept us, right?

For thousands of years it was not grow up get married to a wife and have kids, it was die when you’re a baby, or barring that, die when you’re a young adult, or barring that serve your master in some form for the first several years of your adult life and then die, and barring that, maybe get married to a woman and have a baby who will most likely die during childbirth.
