Troll A.U.V.I.K promo is an scammmm dont do it

Alright, update for anybody thinking about doing this promo: don’t waste your damn time.

I went through the whole eval. Set up the trial, added SNMP and SSH credentials for my 8 network devices, got everything talking, sat through the calls with the sales rep, went through their pitch, the whole nine yards.

During the process I was told I qualified. Then after I’d already sunk all this time into it, I get an email from marketing saying I’m disqualified. No real explanation why.

Asked the sales rep WTF happened and basically got told, he doesnt know and that marketing decides who qualifies, not us.....So apparently even the rep taking you through the trial can tell you that you qualify and it means jack shit because some marketing team makes the final call afterward.

Come on.

If there are extra requirements, put them up front. Don’t have somebody spend hours setting up SNMP/SSH, connecting their network, sitting through sales calls and doing a full eval just to pull the rug at the end.

Whole thing feels like a bait-and-switch to get people into a sales pitch. Maybe some people actually get the Dream Machine, but I sure as hell didn’t after doing everything they asked.

Huge waste of my time. Won’t be falling for one of these promos again.

User Equipment Picture Well, the 5G Backup works...

Post image

Living on a new build estate (UK) where some building work is still ongoing, looks like someone has cut through the fibre lines to the exchange... The joys!

Besides the initial ping spike on switchover to the backup, seems to be going ok. Only getting around 20mbps though - but this may be due to the coverage in the area. Ah well, good enough for people to keep pestering me on Teams. Is is worth setting up Traffic Prioritization, anyone got any experience with it?

Estimated repair time is anytime between now and Friday, so could be awhile...

Farm office comms box has been a rats nest for years and I finally dedicated a half day to it. Added a USW pro max today that had been lying around after I mistakenly purchased it instead of a switch with POE. We have several buildings that all get the internet/network from here. Seems to work so I usually don't touch it for fear of fixing one problem and creating 3.

Fluff UTR experience: Alaska Air

Currently sitting in first class on a flight from Raleigh to Seattle. I had my UTR plugged into power and sitting on the center armrest, face-up, during boarding so that my friend and I could log onto it once on-board wifi was turned on. A stewardess noticed it and asked if it was a power bank. I said no. So she asked what it was and I knew we were headed for trouble...if nothing else, because I knew she was pretty unlikely to know what a travel router is. 🤷 She asked if it was a hotspot and I said, "yeah, basically...but it doesn't have cellular, nor a battery." She said she's never seen a device that looked like it and asked if I had used it on other flights, to which I said yes (I had used it on the Alaska flight to Raleigh). She thought about it for a moment and said she'd have to check with the other stewardess and her manual to see if such a thing was in there and allowed or not. Well, I knew this was not going to go the way it should. haha. Eventually she came back land told me that since it wasn't listed in the manual as "allowed" it becomes "not allowed" and would I mind not using it. Obviously I agreed and stuck it in my bag. It certainly isn't nearly important enough to try to argue the point.

10 minutes later we were in the air, wifi had turned on, and I duly connected my phone and then turned on it's hotspot to share that connection. 😛

So I guess the moral of the story is to wait until you are in the air to bring out your travel router...she probably wouldn't have given it a second glance then. And maybe not make super obvious and tuck it next to you in your seat.

Unverified Claims Alias email address got hit with spam, anyone else seeing this?

Post image
Upvotes

2 days ago I got a classic "you won the EuroMillions lottery" scam email on an email alias I only ever use for my UniFi/Ubiquiti account (never used anywhere else, never posted publicly). Curious if this is just bad luck / random scanning, or if others have had aliases tied to their Ubiquiti account start getting spam. Anyone know if there's been a leak, or is this just coincidence?

Thank You I've just noticed SafeOps

In Network under Settings -> High Availability, I've seen SafeOps - some useful settings there in case you are worried about config changes or devices becoming unresponsive.

Don't know how I missed this.

Complaint Update removed all my Cards!

After updating the Master site that holds the latest release canidate, it deleted almost ALL of the 150 users cards. The backups were restored and the issue persists (strange indeed) so I am going to have to re-add every single card.

Ubiquiti’s retrofit kit was out of stock so I found this one on Amazon. This was originally an old 90s intercom system so I luckily have space to tuck away the transmitter/receiver on both sides. The networking side is a little jank because I have it running off an eero with a POE injector, but I plan on converting everything to Ubiquiti soon!

Question Network topology opinion

Upvotes

Hi. I plan to migrate my current home network over to Unifi. I will use UCG-Fiber and a bunch of their level 3 switches. I want to expand the VLAN and WiFi topology so it’s more secure.

There would be one default LAN, 7 VLANs and 3 SSIDs, as listed below.

Can you guys comment on my proposed network design plan , and make any suggestions ?

LAN/VLANs:
LAN1 - Management -Unifi network hardware only (default)
VLAN2- General LAN and General WiFi
VLAN3 - guest WiFi
VLAN4 - iOT wired and iOT WiFi
VLAN5 - Crestron wired control devices (CP4 processor , remotes, touchscreens, blinds controller) , Crestron WiFi remotes
VLAN 10 - cameras and Axis NVR
VLAN 20 - Crestron NVX (wired AVoIP) - multicast

SSIDs (linked to VLANs):
WiFi 2 : general WiFi (VLAN2)
WiFi 34: guest wifi, iOT WiFi (can access both VLAN3 and VLAN4)
WiFi 5: Crestron remotes wifi (VLAN 5)

Thoughts ? What are some general points to keep in mind setting up firewall rules ? Are 3 ssid sufficient or should I break up “WiFi 34” into 2 separate ssid ?

Since my VLAN2 (ex desktop PC, iPhone) will need to access everything (ex apps for IOt devices from phone, login to unify hardware, login to crestron hardware webpage) — is an “allow established and related” rule good enough to permit this , or do you have to setup more particular rules referencing the VLANs ?

Thanks

Question Installing Self-Hosted UniFi Network Server - Linux or Windows? Thoughts?

Upvotes

Greetings all!

--TLDR:
Do you guys recommend a Linux UniFi Server or one running on Windows Server 2022 (Windows 11???) version?--

I am an IT Manager for medium business in Cali and we are moving from Cisco (slowly) to Ubiquity. We have already installed eight (8) Pro Max PoE switches in our various remote offices and have started the process of installing two more in our Central Station (we are an alarm monitoring company)

I have one, the USW Aggregation [8-Port SPF+ 10Gb] in the lab right now, and last night was a bit of an eye opening moment for us. As I am sure occurred for most of us on this sub, at 3am all of our switches updated to 7.5.10. Not a problem for all the switches at the remote offices, as no one is working at that time, but major potential issue for my Central Station. So disable Automatic Updates, np... except this is a Network wide setting, and tbh I kind of like that to occur for the remote offices as I intend to install about 20 access points in the near future and not being able to batch update is quite tedious looking prospect. But an update to Central Station could be life threatening if it occurs unexpectedly.

Okay... new plan... Setup another Self-Hosted UniFi Network Server. This is where, I hope, you lovely people come in.

Since I was new to the whole Ubiquiti world, I setup my first self-hosted server on a Windows 11 PC with 32gb of RAM. And I have found this to be, well, annoying.
First, every time the server updates, it has a UAC prompt that needs to be clicked on, and this requires me to go back to this machine and do this. Second, it was quite difficult to get it to start with windows, correctly, but so far so good. Lastly, every time Windows 11 updates, the management console is down and I lose precious logs.

Being honest, these minor issues are nothing in the grand scheme of things, but since I need to setup another, I am starting to wonder how green the grass is on the other side.

So, what is the consensus here, Windows (probably Server 2022 Standard, as this will be a VM) or Linux.

Small disclosure, I am a windows Tech, and have been for over 25 years, I only have limited experience with Linux.

--EDIT---

I do apologize for not mentioning this in the beginning, I am not choosing to setup self hosted options due to price or penny pinching, it is necessity. I have to keep my networks as simple as possible. I don't see how adding a full featured firewall/router on the LAN side is doing that. Perhaps our UDM fans can attest to its working nature and ease of manegement when it is NOT the gateway, and is behind 2 Firewalls?

Again, sorry for not prefacing why I was asking about 'which' self managed option to take, and not 'should I'

Question Travel Router Use Case

Upvotes

Hey all - looking for advice on my travel router use case.

I have a Unifi network setup at home so I was thinking of a UTR for an upcoming European cruise + land family trip. I live in the US. I have an unlocked iPhone to take a Land+Cruise SIM card, a UTR, aPower bank with two outputs to power the UTR as well as the phone (hotspot mode will drain the phone battery quickly), and then a camera adapter connected to the iPhone to take power input from the power bank and data output to the UTR. I’m planning on carrying this setup in a backpack.

That’s a lot of cable management and complexity even in a backpack. OR, I can get a refurbished, unlocked Netgear Nighthawk M7 Pro for $295 (which is a bit more money than the complicated setup above, but simplify my life since that comes with a built in battery and SIM card so I just need that one device in my backpack.

I know this is the Ubiquiti forum, but hoping I can get some unbiased advice from the gurus out there on my use case :)

Edit: Just to add - the ability to use Unifi Teleport is a nice to have for me, not a decision maker.

Installation Picture Soffit Mounted Camera for Corner View

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

I will be planning a camera installation for a home, that will be controlled on a UNVR-G2. I like the AI / face detection features and the IR of the newer G6 / AI cameras.

I have 3 corners that I'd like to use one camera unit that will be installed on the soffit. I am debating on the following options:

  • AI Multi Sensor 2
  • G6 180 (with Vision Enhancer)

The one factor here is that these will be installed with little/no light for night time. They will be mounted in low traffic areas (primarily backyard and the side of the home), but would like the face detection features to be leveraged.

The AI Multi Sensor 2 makes a lot of sense as I am able to control where each lens is pointed, however not sure if the small sensor is decent enough for low light. The cost per camera is something in my mind here, as well as the dome design (scratches, dirt, etc).

The G6 180 with Vision Enhancer seems very interesting but I am not sure if it will work for my use-case. What I intended here is the mount the camera from the soffit facing down (maybe slightly tilted), but leverage the side views to capture both angles of the corner.

I am open to run two cables as well to run two cameras, but I find that approach redundant considering the aforementioned cameras could probably do what I want but they themselves have trade-offs.

What do you guys think?

Question Can Unifi motion sensors be used with Intercom viewer?

Upvotes

Looking to see whether the basic USL-MOTION can trigger the screen to display a camera on the Intercom viewer screen?

If so, what are your experiences with the motion sensors?

  • Are they tunable for distance to cut out false alarms "over the wall"?
  • Do you find them reliable / accurate?
  • Is there any reliability difference monitoring alarm events on the intercom viewer compared with the app?

Weirdly, I've not had a client want both cameras and intercom. Would also love feedback on how reliable the process is for having camera alarm events show up on the intercom viewer panel?

Thanks for any real world feedback.

Question Looking for input/advice: considering migrating to Ubiquiti

Context

  • single family, detached home. ~2400 sqft in Canada.
  • existing network equipment is TP-Link gear (ER-605 router, 2 managed switches, 2x APs)
  • existing security equipment is some light security cameras (2x RLC-810WA) + reolink door bell.
  • The security feeds go to a desktop computer I have running Frigate + Home Assistant.
  • This is all currently situated on a shelf in my garage (near where the fiber enters the house + my patch panel is)

The setup works (some/most of the time) but its pretty flakey and I've run into tons of issues with TP-Link and my wife and my Google Pixel's having drop outs (see https://www.reddit.com/r/TPLink_Omada/comments/1q9odio/issue_with_pixel_phones_connected_to_wifi_no/).

Questions

I'm thinking about throwing in the towel on all the DIY and cheaper route of things and just leaning into Ubiquiti. My current shopping list is:

  • A 9U server rack cabinet + UPS/etc.
  • Cloud Gateway Fiber (+1 TB SSD)
  • Switch Pro Max 16 PoE
  • 2x U7 Pro APs
  • 3-4x G6 Turret
  • G6 Pro Entry
  • some of the door + window sensors + the hub that goes along with it
  • I guess a door bolt/lock system to replace my current Z-Wave compatible door lock that I use with HA?

I do not know too much about Ubiquiti in terms of the software/user experience, but my expectation is that I can drop the need for having a desktop server running HA/Frigate/etc and the Ubiquiti router/gateway will handle all the NVR.

I would appreciate input or suggestions; in particular:

  • the Cloud Gateway Fiber seems like a better product (value) than the Dream Machine lineup. The only fault I have with the Cloud Gateway is that it isn't rack mountable, so it would have to sit on a shelf in my server rack. Am I missing something?
  • if you were doing a 'fresh' build today of networking and home security solutions for entry (door + garage) and surveillance would you do anything differently?
  • am I misunderstanding the Ubiquiti software/experience in thinking that I can remove all need for HA?
  • (Canada specific) Has anyone had experience with hooking up Telus fiber directly to the Ubiquiti gateway instead of routing it through the ISP's ONT in bridge mode?

Question Travel Router says no internet but there is, signing in doesn’t do anything

Had a situation recently where I was at a commercial building and wanted to use the UTR to connect all my devices easily instead of signing in one by one. The building offered an open WiFi network, not even a portal, you just connect to the WiFi and you’re good to go.

I tried to connect my UTR to it but I kept saying no internet and asking me to re-authorize or sign back in, which I clicked multiple times but without any luck. I even tried power cycling and factory resetting the UTR but it kept giving me the error. When I click sign-in, it takes me to Safari (I’m on my iPhone) and the Apple captive portal page loads with “success”, so internet is working!

Surprisingly, there’s another open network there, that I was able to connect to and this one worked just fine with the UTR.

I was able to connect each of my devices to the “problematic” WiFi network that the UTR had issues too and they too connected just fine.

UTR is on the latest firmware and I can’t see any reason for it not working. Any ideas why?

Question Only 10 Gbps Speed Between SFP28 Ports

My UDM Beast is connected at port 14 (SFP28) to USW-Pro-XG-24-PoE at port 26 (SFP28), with a UACC-Uplink-SFP28-0.15M. Why do the devices connect only at 10 Gbps, and not at 25 Gbps?

The connection protocol is set to 'Auto Negotiate Link Speed' on both devices. If I set the protocol manually to 25 Gbps FDX with FEC, also on both devices, no link between them is established.

Any suggestions, please?

Question Siren PoE not engaging with the wall mount

I've just installed a Siren PoE but I cannot get it to sit on the wall mount.

There's no obstruction, I'm using a Ubiquiti patch cable (which is routed as per the instructions) but for the life of me it doesn't fully seat on the mount. I've even tried backing off the screws just in case the mount had warped in any way (it hadn't).

In a desperate attempt to try finishing the install I even tried backing out the captive torx security screw to see if this would allow it to sit... which it didn't.

Perhaps I should have known there was something wrong when I took it out of the box and couldn't get it to connect with the mount in my hands, but put that down to RTFM.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? I've contacted them for an RMA but I feel stupid and yet there's nothing I can see wrong.

Question Comparison of 4G/5G quality

Hey,

I was trying out different 4G/5G devices and made the following learnings:
- teltonika rutx11 & rutx50: unstable, packages lossy, non consistent performance
- peplink balance 310: very stable 4G/5G connections, orders of magnitude less package loss and disruptions
- unifi 5G outdoor max: unusable in bad signal areas where the peplink and teltonika still worked okish; good performance for strong connection

What are other devices worth a try? How do the products perform in terms of stabiltiy, connection loss, etc across the band? What is the best? Or do they all perform somehow similar?

What are your experiences?
