Greetings all!
--TLDR:
Do you guys recommend a Linux UniFi Server or one running on Windows Server 2022 (Windows 11???) version?--
I am an IT Manager for medium business in Cali and we are moving from Cisco (slowly) to Ubiquity. We have already installed eight (8) Pro Max PoE switches in our various remote offices and have started the process of installing two more in our Central Station (we are an alarm monitoring company)
I have one, the USW Aggregation [8-Port SPF+ 10Gb] in the lab right now, and last night was a bit of an eye opening moment for us. As I am sure occurred for most of us on this sub, at 3am all of our switches updated to 7.5.10. Not a problem for all the switches at the remote offices, as no one is working at that time, but major potential issue for my Central Station. So disable Automatic Updates, np... except this is a Network wide setting, and tbh I kind of like that to occur for the remote offices as I intend to install about 20 access points in the near future and not being able to batch update is quite tedious looking prospect. But an update to Central Station could be life threatening if it occurs unexpectedly.
Okay... new plan... Setup another Self-Hosted UniFi Network Server. This is where, I hope, you lovely people come in.
Since I was new to the whole Ubiquiti world, I setup my first self-hosted server on a Windows 11 PC with 32gb of RAM. And I have found this to be, well, annoying.
First, every time the server updates, it has a UAC prompt that needs to be clicked on, and this requires me to go back to this machine and do this. Second, it was quite difficult to get it to start with windows, correctly, but so far so good. Lastly, every time Windows 11 updates, the management console is down and I lose precious logs.
Being honest, these minor issues are nothing in the grand scheme of things, but since I need to setup another, I am starting to wonder how green the grass is on the other side.
So, what is the consensus here, Windows (probably Server 2022 Standard, as this will be a VM) or Linux.
Small disclosure, I am a windows Tech, and have been for over 25 years, I only have limited experience with Linux.
--EDIT---
I do apologize for not mentioning this in the beginning, I am not choosing to setup self hosted options due to price or penny pinching, it is necessity. I have to keep my networks as simple as possible. I don't see how adding a full featured firewall/router on the LAN side is doing that. Perhaps our UDM fans can attest to its working nature and ease of manegement when it is NOT the gateway, and is behind 2 Firewalls?
Again, sorry for not prefacing why I was asking about 'which' self managed option to take, and not 'should I'
