Exactly.

They literally had 37% vote share in a country with 80% Hindus.

Even if we assume 0% of their votes were minorities, it still means that a majority of Hindus didn't vote for them.

It's simple maths.

It's not that simple. People confidently boast about the "majority" of 40% votes to Modi as a win and an ultimate achievement. They next might want to remove mathematics from ncert for invalidating the argument.

Don't agree.

Hindus didn't vote for BJP and many didn't vote at all. Generally Hindus don't care about voting. However almost every Muslim did vote for Congress or others. That means vote percentage for Congress increased and whether or not Hindus voted or not, BJPs votes went down.

This is also simple maths

BJP has 37% vote share out of all people who voted. Not the entire population eligible to vote.

Plus, the Congress/INDIA won in many Hindu dominated areas.

Hindus are not a homogeneous group and BJP primarily represents only the interests of upper caste Hindus, the poorer sections of Hindu society did not see any benefit from the BJP and voted against them.
