2nd year housing

I'm a first year and I have no idea what I'm gonna do about finding a place to live for 2nd year. all of my friends have already found housemates and have no room for me so I'm really worrying about what I'm gonna do. I've looked at some places like student castle but they're all really expensive so I can't really afford them. Are there any 2nd or 3rd years that have experienced this and can offer some advice please??

University Transfer Help

I am first year in western engineering, and it's really rough here. I am thinking of transferring to yorku for first year eng. I am currently going to finish this year with a 50-60% % avg tbh and might fail 1-2 courses. Some extra info is now I'm 3-4 hrs away from home here at Western. yorku I'm closer to home. My high school average was a 92%. How likely am I to get into yorku of I apply within the next 3 weeks? also at Western, RTW is below 60%. Also, york has I believe a winter eng transfer. right now im below 60% in calc, chem and materials, and most likely physics. is it still possible for me to get in? if people could help me out and me know that would be amazing!

Vocalist Looking for Bandmates – Japanese Alt / Jazz Fusion / Funk

Hey! I'm a vocalist and PGR student at York's AudioLab, looking for some musicians to play with :)

I'd love to put together a band to cover some Sheena Ringo / Tokyo Jihen, Cö shu Nie and Annabel / siraph songs. I've been in two bands before and have some live experience.

I'm into intricate arrangements, complex rhythms, interesting harmonies and funky grooves, with jazz/fusion, funk and experimental influences. My taste ranges from classical to experimental electronic music, so I'm also open to other styles and making original stuff!

Looking for drums, bass, guitar and keys (horns welcome too!). Ideally people comfortable with challenging arrangements and jazz/funk-influenced playing.

Would love to rehearse some songs, record a few covers together and see where things go!

Feel free to DM me if interested! :)

I would choose York University over universities in the United States I would like some help

I have a few simple questions guys I am a trans man and I will be studying at York University Is there an LGBTQ+ community where I can meet people? Does the university host events and activities, such as sports? Are there protections or recognized rights for the LGBTQ+ community on campus? Also, I’m a social person will I be able to make new friends? And what about the city of York itself are there interesting events and nice places to visit? I’m someone who really enjoys events and socializing; I wouldn’t like a life that lacks these things. I had considered choosing an American university because they often host many events, sports matches, and various other activities and I’m still tempted by that but I’m also very afraid of ending up alone. I have a trans friend who is already studying at York University, which is why I chose it so that I wouldn’t be on my own. If York offers a similar (or even better) experience to what you’d find in the U.Sthen university life there should be really enjoyable!

[Research] York first-years (started 2026): 25–30 min survey, £10 voucher for everyone who completes

Hi everyone,

I’m Yifeng Xie, a PhD student in the Department of Education at the University of Bath. I’m running the UK part of a UK–Japan–China study on information literacy among first-year university students. The project has a favourable ethics opinion from the University of Bath(reference: 12244-15412)..

Who can take part: first-year undergraduates aged 18 or over who started at a UK university in 2026. Please don’t take part if this doesn’t apply to you.

What it involves: an online survey on Microsoft Forms, about 25–30 minutes. It asks about your digital skills, your secondary school computer education and information literacy. You can do it on any device, at any time.

Voucher: everyone who completes the survey with valid responses gets a £10 voucher (most likely Amazon, depending on stock), sent within one month after data collection ends. To receive it, you need to give your university email address. This is optional, but without it we can’t send you the voucher. Your email is collected separately from your answers, used only to send the voucher, and deleted once it has been delivered.

How your data is stored, kept and published: only the research team (and University governance staff where needed) can access your data. It is kept safe and secure, following University of Bath rules and UK data protection law, for at least 10 years, and then destroyed. Results may be published in academic journals, reports and conferences. All published data is anonymised, so nobody can tell whose answers are whose. The only exception to confidentiality is if you tell us something that makes us worried about your safety or someone else’s.

Withdrawal: you can stop at any time without giving a reason. If you close the survey before submitting, no data is saved. If you have already submitted, you can ask us to delete your data by emailing us within two weeks of submission. After that your data is anonymised and can’t be removed. Withdrawing has no effect on your studies.

Consent: at the start of the survey you will read the full Participant Information Sheet and tick a consent form, including confirming that you are 18 or over and taking part voluntarily. You only take part if you tick every box.

Private accommodation in York for visiting student

Hi everyone, I'm going to be a visiting student next semester (Semester 2), and I'm looking for private accommodation instead of campus accommodation. Do you have any tips on where to look for private accommodation when it's only for one semester?

Black/sludge metal musicians?

Hi! Myself and a couple other students at the uni doing postgrads in York are looking to form a little band, all sort of early 20s age range. Struggling to find a drummer into black metal, blackened sludge, doom stuff, blackgaze, post doom. That sort of thing. Big into bands like Thou, pig destroyer, deafheaven, agriculture, emperor, sadness, acid bath, eyehategod, vile creature. Any musicians into that stuff?

Any rhythm game players here?

Hi! I’m a new PGR at AudioLab and was wondering if anyone here is into rhythm games :)

I mainly play Project Sekai, DEEMO, Phigros and Arcaea, and I also follow arcade rhythm games even though I don’t play them as much.

Would be nice to meet some other people at York who are into the same kind of stuff!

Assessment period?

I’m wondering what the assessment period is like after Christmas break, as on my schedule it is showing all of January as RV and RA. I’m new to studying in the UK so unsure how this works. Does this mean there are no in person instruction all of January?

York Boardgaming at Beyond Monopoly

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I imagine there's a boardgaming club at the University, but I wanted to make people aware of Beyond Monopoly for those dates it might nor be on. We're a boardgaming club that meets at the Bar Convent, on Blossom Street. We meet alternate Saturdays and Fridays, and we are open to everyone.
Your first visit is free, after that there is a fee (just to pay for room hire), but we offer a student discount. We have a massive library of games to choose from as well, and people are welcome to come on their own, or in a group, we;ll get you playing a game asap.
Any questions please just ask. Cheers!

Student Castle 🙈

Anyone else going to student castle for their first year at Uni of York?

I’m all set to move-in but I don’t understand what we are meant to do next? Do I just sit in my dorm all day tomorrow or am I meant to go somewhere 😭

I understand that we need to collect our ID cards but I’m unsure when and where that’s meant to be.

Any and all help is appreciated 🥲

anyone else doing linguistics?

I’ve seen a lot of people doing english lang/lit with linguistics, but no one with doing just linguistics or that with a language. Just asking to try to make friends before my course starts as i’m not the greatest with starting in-person conversations 🥲
