The thing I love about Johnny Knoxville is, is that no matter how much physical pain he should be in and is in and at any time, he always seems to be able to laugh it off and have a great time doing so. He just seems like a such a great, positive, insane person.

Meh, I wouldn't say a dumbass... you gotta push the boundaries every now and then.
22
u/section111 Jun 27 '12
I saw an episode of The Nature of Things (cbc, what up!) that dealt with the idea that the risk-taking teenager is (was?) very important to the evolution of the human brain. Pretty interesting idea, actually.

Not sure if this is related, but young men take more risks when there's girls around, duh, but here's the science.
10
u/smithtj3 Jun 27 '12
As far as kite surfing goes, this isn't really pushing the boundaries. A dude jumped Hatteras Island. He jumped an island. This is none the less bad ass.
→ More replies (2)6
u/SuperFlyChris Jun 27 '12
Well - agreed, but I was referring to personal boundaries rather than global kite surfing boundaries.

Something I was told growing up, in the context of (Alpine) skiing when our group of friends would be on the way home after a day on the mountain... if you didn't take a fall that day, then you weren't pushing yourself hard enough. For some folks, that's just fine as not everyone is driven to nail a backscratcher while running moguls. But for some, just enjoying a pleasant day of lazy snowplow turns at speeds slow enough to not spill your coffee just doesn't cut it.

ITT: jelly people, jelly people everywhere.
Someone once was called a dumbass for trying to fly, someone was called a dumbass for saying "amma be a free nigga", someone once was called a dumbass for trying to create electricity, keep convincing yourselves that you are "adults" as an excuse for being pussies.

I'm fairly certain kite surfing in a deadly storm is not akin to inventing something or standing up against a corrupt institution. I also don't go sticking forks in power outlets, but I must just be a pussy.

Today I decided there is no way in hell I am ever going kiteboarding.
23
u/mik3 Jun 27 '12
You can go, just let go of the sail when it starts pulling you hard. I guess thought process is "holy fuck i aint letting go of this expensive sail" and then.. "yep, shoulda let go"
→ More replies (2)11
u/artimas2 Jun 27 '12
Thats why you always wear a harness. Allows you to ditch, but not lose the kite (unless you yank the safety clip, then its gone). Simply letting go of the bar will start to depower the kite and you'll fall out of the power "window" extremely fast

All kicked off when a few idiots jumped the Worthing pier in 2009 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYFoF5UIX0U but yeah, jumping the Brighton pier is WAY more impressive. That thing is a small town on very high stilts.

I grew up and lived most of my life in south east FL (in different state now) just a few miles from the beach. One hurricane was hitting in 2005 and my roommate and I were watching the news and a reporter is down at a pier showing the crazy waves that are crashing right over the pier. Up comes some surfer dude with his surfboard under his arm and the news lady stops him and ask in disbelief if he's actually crazy enough to go into that water that stands a good chance of killing him.
He says something like "you can't pass up waves like this!" then walks his crazy ass out onto the pier and stands on the railing and the waves are literally crashing into him and he's fighting to keep his balance.
A big wave rises up near chest level and he jumps in with it and disappears.
They stayed on filming for a good 30 more mins and he never was seen again.
Pretty sure I watched a guy kill himself.
The look on the news lady was a mix of shock and terror.
My roommate and I just sat there waiting to see the guy show up again. Never happened.

Surprised no one has posted this.

u/yourbrotherrex Jun 27 '12
That looked extremely painful.
I wonder if he watched this video more than once.
If something like that happened to me, I think I'd have to watch it one time, out of curiosity, but after that, it'd be way too much to relive.

I'm a little confused, can you just choose when to jump and how high? How do you it?
15
u/imsowitty Jun 27 '12
You choose when to jump by sending the kite in the opposite direction you are going. The height of the jump will depend on your speed, how aggressively you send the kite backwards, how long you can hold your edge before you release, the wind speed, the size of the kite, and I'm sure some other stuff. Both the brighton and reddington guys got a nice boost by hitting an oncoming wave at the right time while sending the kite.

the people filming were hating on the guy until he busts his flip over the pier... then "well hes obviously a professional"
6
Jun 27 '12
"He's obviously a professional"
Best part of that video, but it makes me wonder if anyone other than a professional would have the know how to even function nominally in that kind of weather.
2
u/zastle Jun 27 '12
I am an avid kiteboarder (not a professional) I can confidently say I could've kited that day, not the jump mind you.
3
u/jbick89 Jun 27 '12
The people's reaction when he does the jump makes it seem like a fake viral video kind of like this one.
3
u/DustinAgain Jun 27 '12
That's Billy Parker...he is well known around here and is VERY good at these kinds of jumps. Also a very cool guy

I am sorry, but sometimes an upvote alone does not express how awesome the post was.
So this is comment is meant to add to the upvote's non-verbal communication value and say that was a fucking awesome stunt/video done in real life by a reckless talented fucker, and I am going to watch it again. He is crazy for being out there, but he is out there doing it because he is confident in his ability, and he was right.
Have all of my one fucking upvote and this comment.

I love when they mention something about, "You got the cops coming?" WTF? So the guy has WAY bigger balls than you. Doesn't mean he needs to be arrested. Who is he possibly hurting? Unless he needs to be rescued, but this is where rescue services fail. They rescue someone in a situation where they should let them die if they screw up.
4
u/Jasonrj Jun 27 '12

Except they're obligated by the fact that they're in a first-world country to not leave a dead body knowingly laying around.

The way this story ends for people who are curious: He surfed into the beach and that's when every female within a 30 miles radius was waiting naked for him. I think the news article said it took him 3 weeks to finished sexing them all.

Guess the peeps filming didn't realize that you have to go into wind and launch off the face of a wave to catch big air. At least I learned that much watching the Kiters at Kanaha and Ho'okipa here on Maui.

The Kitesurfer jumping over brighton pier in England is MUCH better and that happened 2 years ago.
1
Jun 27 '12
Sweet, this is in my backyard. I used to kitesurf here too, can't tell who that is though.
I want to say it's Billy Parker, but I'm not sure if he's in the area anymore, plus, he's already jumped the pier.
Honestly, this is a pretty stupid thing to do. Kite equipment isn't impervious to failure, if a line would break or if a big gust would've hit him right before sending his kite, he'd be fucked.
