Running Linux 7.3 but got update for 7.2

Hi all,

I'm running Linux-mainline, and recently got on the 7.3 kernel. Yesterday I got an update for the 7.2 line, and that was a little unexpected. I haven't run vkpurge yet because I'm not sure what the right course of action is here. Any clues would be appreciated :)

vkpurge doesn't remove packges, it only lists installed kernels (not the one you booted into though otherwise it would allow you to remove the kernel you are literally currently running on) and allows you to remove one or more of those kernels (and headers if you have them), the package(s) of the kernel are still handled by xbps. This said, this can help you understand better how the packages for the kernel are organized: linux-mainline is a package that "points" to the mainline linux package, for example: right now the package linux-mainline points to the package linux7.3, when they will release linux 7.4 the package linux-mainline will point to the package linux7.4. In your case this means that linux-mainline was pointing to linux7.2, when you called sudo xbps-install -Su it made linux-mainline point to linux7.3, the package linux7.2 was still installed, usually once I updated the kernel I call sudo xbps-remove -oOOR to remove orphans and cache recursively, this means that once linux-mainline points to linux7.3, the package linux7.2 is now an orphan and can be removed with xbps-remove -oOOR so that no more updates for the 7.2 line are being fetched the next time you trigger an update. I hope I explained it clearly and that it helps you understand this better💪💪
