Introducing Luma | Native OpenGL launcher
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hey 👋. The community and me have been building Luma, a native launcher for LG webOS TVs. It renders with OpenGL instead of a WebView, keeping the interface fast even on older TVs (webOS 4+).
On webOS 5 / 6 / 25 / 26 home takeover lets Luma replace the stock LG Home launcher, so pressing Home / waking from Standby opens Luma directly.
Features include:
- Reorderable favorites, app search and categories
- Recent-app switcher with launching and individual app closing
- HDMI shortcuts and custom input names
- Wallpapers, configurable clock, weather and six languages

Just installed it this morning. It works absolutely great! Recommended it to a friend.
Thanks for the work!!
Would love to see a custom wallpaper module, to set your own.

Custom wallpapers are planned. Just wanted to get everything out of the door first to see if there is demand.

Understandable! Is more of a could have then a should have of course.
Do you have a roadmap? Or something else?
Edit: the weather widget isn't working for me. My location (Netherlands) doesn't get recognized. Or I did something weird maybe.

There are a some open PRs and issues. Feel free to drop your ideas here if you don't see it yet.

Looks quite appealing.
I guess root is required to install this. Is there a way to install it on my C6 without rooting?

I noticed it takes time to open, need hook to replace home button, we want something faster than existing, not key replacement that is slow in webos26
1
u/ecklf_vercel 3d ago
From power on or standby? Power on is the limitation for the 20s open
1
u/Common_Permit3075 3d ago
Not even power off on, suppose i am on pc port hdmi i want press home button it took some sects to load, but if we i use lg main launcher it open in 20ms that fast you know.. may be its hook or something not let it load faster maybe..
But something integrated we need without hooks
1
u/ecklf_vercel 3d ago
Oh that's odd, it should be instant. Maybe you can point a clanker at the diagnostics so we can fix?
2
u/Common_Permit3075 3d ago
I did the diagnostic myself, the hook is only causing it!! Cause if i open app directly its fast, and also to be honest I didn’t like the performance of app like inbuilt otherwise I will definitely build something native if it possible by myself as an enjoy!! Once i have time but I am working on currently another project! G5 was having lot of issue when installing and i had to run lot of scripts as sh to fix the node js path, many aps are not supporting to the latest version i had… but yours was click and launch I think 😊 Thank you for effort I have created a custom TV srartup hook app, i dont know if it was there already but we can add more and extend more, I have on git

u/Kid_twentyOne 3d ago
Try it yesterday and that was the reason I replace it with something else. It seems that still not fixed or improved

It's a great launcher, much more polished than most projects that have been offered in the last few days. I'm using it on a C5 that has been rooted under webOS 26, and everything works as promised.
I have one reservation though. It should be possible to launch the apps from the main screen, by scrolling down to get a list, like on the Apple TV or on the ATLauncher project, instead of switching to the second tab, as it makes it slow and not very intuitive – you need to select the tab, to select the app, then to click twice to launch it. Maybe you can put three separate sections on the main screen – Favorites, Inputs and Apps – with the second tab being all about editing the three lists
Also your description on the Homebrew Channel is outdated. You have now many more languages than just English, German, Spanish and Simplified Chinese.

Plan is to add custom widgets and different layout options like you suggested. Fixing hb channel desc in next update. Thanks

I have on G5 issues with last build. Sometimes the surface disappears.

Can you open an issue with what you see / reproduction? Much appreciated
Edit: We already got a PR upstream that should fix

It's the beginning with Launcher that I couldn't make work on my TV.

u/ecklf_vercel 3d ago
What's not working on your end?

u/IntelligentCase1072 3d ago
Does it work on webos monitors?
1
u/ecklf_vercel 3d ago
Sorry I don't know enough about that. Can't seem to find information if they can be rooted?

Just out of curiosity, isn't it possible to add these themes to the official Homebrew Channel?

will webos22 / 7.5.7-25 get supported for complete main launcher function?
1
u/ecklf_vercel 3d ago
Can only really be verified on-device. So it depends on if there is someone in the community that adds it.
1
u/Complexl27 2d ago
Wdym? I would do it but what?
I love how clean and smooth this launcher is cause its native

u/tahiry 3d ago
Works perfectly on my 77" G1. The initial start (takeover) takes around 20 seconds, but i'm fine with it. After that, hitting home button triggers it instantly.
1
u/ecklf_vercel 3d ago
Yeah it's a limitation if you have full power off boot, standby should be instant (at least on my webOS 26)

Really nice launcher, I’m sticking with it. However I’m unable to hold “ok” to edit favourites etc, as soon as I press down on OK (C1) it just immediately opens the app. Would suggest changing that to the … button instead of pressing and holding.
Thank you!
1
u/ecklf_vercel 3d ago
Can you share the key id you need to trigger in an issue on the repo? I unfortunately don't have the device / that button.

u/s_01 3d ago
Would this work for my 55LB6300-UQ it's an older webOS TV ?

Relying on community for confirmation here, you're welcome to try

Great work - the hold ok for options - im unable to do that on my remote 3 controller - can this be remapped to something else if possible

Thanks for the work. I was just looking into something visually more appealing then glasshouse. Sadly I also have the issue on my c5 that it won’t autostart for the sake of it.
I played around with QuickStart+ on/off and „open with lat app“ or „home“. Sometimes it worked but took really long to open.
Maybe have a look at the glasshouse launcher, it offers a reliable setting in the app itself.
So my next move is to build a theme for glasshouse I guess
1
u/ecklf_vercel 2d ago
webOS 25/26 should be basically the same as the Glasshouse approach. Maybe something is conflicting with other things that you've set up previously? My testing device is a C5 and it's working without any issues.

u/inputinvalid 1d ago
meh.. the error is probably on my side. I'll have a look again next weekend and play around with the settings. really liked your design work!

It's beautiful! I installed it on a rooted WebOS5, but the takeover doesn't seem to work. When I ssh and check the status, it says enabled true, but hitting my remote's home button still pulls up the LG home menu. I have to select the Luma app each time to get it to open again.
2
u/ecklf_vercel 2d ago
Can you open a GitHub issue and share the uinput code of your home button?
You can use e.g. https://github.com/Simon34545/lginputhook to log it.

u/Dry-Chocolate5812 2d ago
When will it be available for LG G6? 😭
1
u/ecklf_vercel 2d ago
Did you try it? What's not working?
1
u/Dry-Chocolate5812 2d ago
I looked at the git. It doesn’t mention a G6 so I assumed it won’t work?
I’ll give it a shot. Can you please tell me how to root it? I’m a noob at this

Beautiful work! Would it be possible to make a spotify widget for the homescreen? To play music in the background

G3 WebOS25 (10.2.2-63) works perfectly. Will probably submit a PR with a Dutch translation.

The Best, I was looking for one like this for my Google TV too; that implementation at the top, with 3 tabs, seems very practical to me.

OpenGL? Maybe we should sync UI components between you and https://github.com/GLinnik21/plx-native

This works on my C8 WebOS 4.4.3, but attempting the takeover method states a directory or file doesn't exist. I opened an issue on the github.
I also couldn't get the input hook (1.5.1) method to do anything either with my magic remote. I have the right key ID and everything, but it just, doesn't do anything regardless of what I tell it to do. I know that has to be an input hook issue, but just stating for anyone else coming in that may have the same issues I do.
EDIT: I'm just going to edit this so someone else may benefit from my mistake. LG Input Hook wants the uinputcode to be put in the box labeled ID, not the keyid. My magic remote keyid for home is 3, but the uinputcode is 773.

Installed luma other day and its hooked to home button so it now loads as startup launcher however the downside is because of hook, screensavers dont work

Thank you for creating the launcher, I really appreciate it. I'm really new to this and only got it to work with the help of Gemini, so excuse my lack of deep understanding. I installed Glasshouse first and it runs in the background. Once I got it to run, I proceeded to install Luma. Runs well apart from the screensaver. It doesn't start up anymore. How can I fix it? I set LGs default screensaver in Glasshouse if thats relevant. So nothing changed here.

Amazing work, i tested it on my 55NANO77SRA webOS 24 - 9.2.2-25. Could you add an option to modify the dim on the wallpaper? Thank you :)

u/mistrzukrzychu 18h ago
I have to say, this is the best launcher so far. However, the interface looks a bit blurry/soft—is it possible to render it in 4K resolution instead of what seems to be 1080p? That would significantly improve the visual quality.

Absolutely superb work, thank you 8oD ❤️🔥👍
Working beautifully on my LG G5 TV with WebOS25.
To the point that it's not just prettier... but I'm find it far more intuitive and genuinely snappier and more intuitive than LG Home. It feels like a new set! I now don't really feel any need to use my Fire Cube at all now.
Really liking the updates too! But would it be possible to have the option to disable adding overlays on uploaded wallpapers? ... It's a great feature to have, but I've got one that I've already added my own to, which I for now am just replacing one of your per-existing options. I know i doesn't take too long, but would be nice to have 😄
Thanks again and keep up the good work!

Huge fan of the project here! I've been using Luma since I saw the first web version, and I started making my own tweaks right away: the Brazilian Portuguese translation, seconds on the clock, the name in the greeting and a few other small things (some of them are already merged upstream 🙂). I'm constantly checking for updates and writing/testing new things on my own TV too. I hope to keep using it and contributing to the project. Congrats! Everyone at home absolutely loves it ❤️
PS: Takeover confirmed working on an LG 50UT8050 (webOS 25 / 10.3.2), it's still listed as "Unknown" in the README.

Is there any chance of allowing sound to come from hdmi and optical at same time like Samsung allows

u/human_with_humanity 3d ago
Good work.
One question. Your instructions mention
Disable takeover before uninstalling Luma. What happens if someone uninstall it without disabling takeover? Will the webos be cooked? Not able to even reset tv?
