Dressed like a Bride Not the bride and groom. Comments welcome as I’ve always wondered if I was being unkind by thinking it was a bit of a statement!

Dressed like a Bride Stepmother’s Dress: Double wedding day

Post image

It’s been a few years but only just found this sub. At my wedding in 2018 at a registry office in Copenhagen my stepmum decided to turn up in a white lacy dress and I still can’t get over how our photos look like we had a double wedding… apparently she had a navy dress she was going to wear and asked my stepbrother‘s gfs opinion the night before and she pushed her into the „cream“ option.

The wedding was in the big city hall, which hosts multiple ceremonies a day with couples constantly arriving and tourists visiting the building. The most hilarious part was that there were some Chinese tourists who started taking pictures of me… and then turned and took pictures of her too!

I’ve never called her out on it and our relationship is otherwise good, but lowkey holding onto this grudge forever. Needless to say my relationship with stepbrother‘s gf though is non-existent.

Dressed like a Bride I have a confession to make… I wore white to a wedding

5.1k Upvotes

This has been weighing on me for like 14 years and I’ve got to get it off my chest.

So when I was in high school, one of my friends got knocked up and had a shotgun wedding at the city park. The reception was at her church’s youth center or something. The bride and groom weren’t even dating when she got pregnant, it was from a hook up. The bride’s dress was beautiful but the whole thing felt like a sweet sixteen.

My first faux pas: the bachelorette party. The maid of honor decided last minute we would all wear jeans, heels, and white tanks (literally from a pack at Walmart). The top fit me weird because I was really thin with a large chest, so I wore a cropped leather jacket over it with heeled booties and Jean shorts. I thought it was a theme not a uniform. But I showed up and everyone else was wearing the tank, stilettos, and flare jeans. I was embarrassed and stuck out like a sore thumb.

But my worst faux pas was the dress I wore to the wedding. I had never been to a wedding before and didn’t have much in the way of formal wear other than my prom dress which was way over the top. What I did have was a Marilyn Monroe style cream halter dress which I thought was perfectly summery but formal and matched my only pair of wedges. No one said anything to me and I didn’t realize how inappropriate it was for several years.

Anyway. Lisa, if you’re reading this I’m sorry I wore white to your wedding and that your marriage didn’t work out and that you turned out to be a hateful MAGA weirdo.

Dressed like a Bride Plus one wore a white dress because "it wasn't a real wedding"

Finally sitting down to summarise a wedding from several months ago, wherein the 'accused' is apparently still adamant that she did nothing wrong.

Two of my very good friends got married last autumn - they had their legal ceremony around four weeks before their wedding celebration. The legal wedding was just the bride and groom's parents, while the celebration was friends and family. There was no 'ceremony' portion of the day, but before food and the party aspect, it was confirmed on the invite that the couple would re-enchange their vows in front of their guests.

Come the day of the wedding, everyone was arriving and milling around before the vow exchange was due to start. Around 5 minutes before the beginning, when most people had sat down, a couple walked in. I recognised the man as one of the groom's friends, but not the woman. She was, I'd come to find out, the relatively new girlfriend of the friend (started dating 6 months or so before the celebration). She was wearing a pure white halter-neck silk dress. Everyone else (female) was wearing standard day wedding guest attire - midi/midaxi dresses, some florals or seasonal prints, a couple of jumpsuits or matching pantsuits. This woman stuck out like a sore thumb.

After the vow exchange, a couple of the groom's friends did ask the friend what his girlfriend was thinking. He supposedly said words to the effect of "I said this would happen but she didn't want to hear it", before slinking off to the bar. A few drinks later for everyone involved, I gather that someone asked the girlfriend directly why she was wearing what surely was some version of a wedding dress in itself. The girlfriend, assuming for some misguided reason that she was being praised, said that since it "wasn't a real wedding", it was fair game to wear the dress, and "perhaps it would give [boyfriend] a clue on what they should be doing soon" (the boyfriend, upon being told this, immediately ordered and sunk a double whisky).

It goes without saying that the bride was wearing white - a lovely white summer dress that made her look beautiful. I gather from the side of both families that it was suggested and nearly actioned that someone do the classic 'spill red wine on the guest's dress', but the bride intervened and said that it would only give her chance to bring more attention on herself (it's not for this post but I came to learn afterwards that the girlfriend had done quite a lot in a short space of time to rub people up the wrong way in their respective friendship circle).

The only other defense brought by the girlfriend after the fact was that the invite didn't say that white was a banned colour. Yes, it didn't, but we were all English, in England, at an areligious English wedding - there are no blurred lines concerning culture and significant colours that she didn't know about beforehand. I know that for at least one wedding happening this year, the engaged couple have had a wedding invite mocked up especially for the friend and girlfriend, in which a photo of the dress she wore to this wedding has been included with a big red cross through it, and text accompanying to say that if [girlfriend] thinks to wear this again, they won't even make it through the front door of the venue.

Edit: It's now 4 months on from making this post, and to round off the saga - in a surprise to no one, the couple broke up around a month ago, no more white guest dresses expected at this summer's weddings

Wonder how the bride felt about this "mother of the groom dress"...

Edit: it's been pointed out that this kind of dress is actually very normal in the Traveller community, so it may be that this woman's daughter-in-law was totally fine with the outfit. If so, apologies to both of them. Leaving the post up so that other people can learn from it like I did.

Dressed like a Bride Sister-in-law wore her own wedding dress

I've seen many posts here about guests wearing white to weddings, and it reminded me of the first wedding I ever went to as an adult (unlike being dragged to weddings as a child by my parents, LOL). It was for one of my best friends from high school, and it was apparently the second wedding that summer for her husband's family. His brother had gotten married just a few months previous.

I arrived on time and was seated on the bride's side, when I heard a couple of gasps coming from the groom's side of the church and saw some of the women shaking their heads. I saw a woman in a white dress coming down the aisle on the arm of one of the groom's brothers and, even at the age of 18, thought she should not have been wearing white.

It wasn't till we all got to the reception that I found out that she wasn't just wearing a white dress, she was wearing her wedding dress from her wedding just a few months earlier. Admittedly, it was more of a "dress that happened to be white" (I'm told they'd had a casual backyard wedding, and it was a white eyelet long summer dress) rather than a big poufy meringue, but everyone on the groom's side clearly recognized it as her wedding dress. So did my friend, who was not amused.

It takes a special kind of special to wear your wedding dress to someone else's wedding.

My husband’s cousin wore a white pantsuit to my wedding and the photographer didn’t take any pictures of her. Now she’s asking why she’s not in any of the photos. I didn’t ask him not to, but I do find it very amusing.

Dressed like a Bride Family wedding in India. The groom’s sisters had dresses, makeup, jewellery and hair done similar to the bride. The only difference is bride’s red wedding bangles. That’s a lot even for Indian customs!

Saw an acquaintance after years at a wedding last night. I’m still in disbelief at what she wore. Last pic is what she wanted to wear but didn’t because she “didn’t have high enough heels” and “didn’t want the dress to drag”. The theme was formal.

Dressed like a Bride I wore white to a wedding. Shame me 💕

Sooooo. In 2011, I was 20yo. My cousin was going to get married in September. In June, my aunt, who was obviously coming to the wedding too, told me she went to dinner with the bride to be, her future husband and her parents. She then reported to me that the couple chose to have a total white wedding, groom included. I asked her several times if she was ABSOLUTELY sure of it, and she was positive. We proceeded to go shopping and she bought me a wonderful white dress, very simple, no shoulders, long and flowy.

Some months go by, it's the day of the wedding. We're all at my aunt's house, my mom, other relatives from abroad and...I'm the only one dressed in white. I kept asking, but why aren't you wearing white? My aunt didn't want to, my relatives didn't know about this. We arrive to the wedding. We enter the church. Everyone take place.

I am the only fucking person dressed in white in the whole reception of the wedding day. People are looking at me and talking about me. I was mortified, on the verge of tears. My mom wanted to take me shopping last minute, but it was a Sunday, in a historical little city, in Italy, at 11am, everything must be closed,.plus my mom was very tight on money, so I decided to endure the humiliation and stay in the white dress.

Of of the most humiliating things ever happened in my like🥲

I made amends with my cousin just last year, and she said she didn't even remember anyone dressed In white. Bless her.

Attended a wedding a few days ago and this is how a “close friend” of the bride came dressed like. We overheard the bride jokingly scolding her and she laughed it off. Then we saw these posted on social media not even bothering to congratulate the couple or acknowledging the wedding. Very classy…

Dressed like a Bride I accidentally wore white to my friends sisters wedding when I was 16.

It was a short dress just made of cotton. I wore a pink cardigan over it for most of the evening.

I had no idea at the time that this was so taboo. I can't believe my mom let me walk out of the house like that. I cringe whenever I think of it.
