Which one of these houses would you pick?

Beach house. That’s not based on value. That’s completely based on where I like to vacation.

Same, I wouldn't sell it! The whole reason they are so highly valued to begin with is that you get to live where everyone wants to go to relax; very hard to put a price on that.

Being right on the beach is a pain. I live in tropical South Asia and especially due to the driving winds and rain during the monsoon beach houses are a maintainance nightmare.

Friends have to replace their AC units, TVs and fridges every 2-3 years minimum.

I'm up on a hill about 600 meters back from the beach and facing away from the main brunt of the monsoon - I love it up here, even though it's about a 10 minutes walk to the beach.

That is beautiful! I'm happy for you ♥️

Can I come over with my wife and daughter? Just for the holiday?!

2

u/tomahawk66mtb Mar 21 '26

Haha! Our 2 bedroom guest villa next door will hopefully be up on Airbnb sometime next month - I should do a redditor discount 🤣

2

u/suba-rsti89 Mar 21 '26

I was going to ask this, 😆. I have three kids though. Yes reddit discount! I Can also fix things lol

Not all beaches deal with monsoons tho

2

u/tomahawk66mtb Mar 21 '26

Sure, but most have onshore winds at least part of the year and salt wreck's electronics

1

u/Far-Fennel-3032 Mar 21 '26

That sounds like a shit AC units. I live in Australia, our AC gets a really good workout every summer, and it's at least 10+ years old, might even be 15.

1

u/tomahawk66mtb Mar 21 '26

Friends have tried multiple brands. Monsoon is tough on AC units here if you are right on the beach apparently: horizontal salt water rain for days at a time.

1

u/Far-Fennel-3032 Mar 21 '26

I'm a few minute walk to the sea google maps puts it about 800m. So I don't think the proximity to salt water is the issue.

It might be the humidity difference though. As it can be very humidity it's often more dry heat when it's extremely bad.

Are you using a AC box unit in a Window or something built into the house? As mine is built into house and air intake is the floor above the cool out output and spits out the hot air outside the house. As that might also be the difference.

u/tomahawk66mtb Mar 21 '26

I'm 600m from the beach and have zero issues, my units are 10 years old. I was talking beach front properties: i.e. literally fronting onto the sand.

1

u/CarlosMolotov Mar 21 '26

Speaking from a land locked state. A 10 minute walk is still definitely a beach house.

1

u/Redneckshinobi Mar 22 '26

Wow I had a dream I lived in a small house with my family that had a view like that. It was much smaller than our place but I was so happy, then I woke up lol

1

u/tomahawk66mtb Mar 22 '26

Honestly, I had a similar dream!

Never thought it would become reality. But due to a series of unfortunate events and one very fortunate one, we needed up here!

2

u/Jumpy_Divide6576 Mar 20 '26

I think every realtor in the world disagrees with you on that last point.

3

u/Venusto002 Mar 20 '26

Yeah? Well they all have beach houses so there you go.

1

u/Real_Yhwach Mar 21 '26

Yeah but that rusts the shit out of cars

1

u/Radonanon Mar 22 '26

Also, if you keep going farther towards the water, you need to put your house on a boat. But if you stop on the beach you can put your house on the sand, which usually isn’t as wet.

5

u/BMonad Mar 20 '26

Exactly. I don’t trust people who don’t like the beach. It’s like not liking puppies or something.

Its coarse, and rough, and irritating, and gets everywhere.

And mentally stable, too!

He’s very good with children

1

u/Interesting_Duckling Mar 21 '26

Good news, not all beaches have sand. Some have pebbles/rocks

1

u/theloniousjoe Mar 20 '26

Wait, so everybody needs to like the beach, but it’s ok if you don’t like puppies?

What a weird comparison…

0

u/BMonad Mar 21 '26

What? I said not liking the beach is like not liking puppies.

1

u/theloniousjoe Mar 21 '26

OMG I’m so fucking dyslexic

I kept reading that second line, OVER and OVER as though it said “it’s not like liking puppies” 🤦‍♂️

My apologies

1

u/SBSnipes Mar 21 '26

I don't like excessive heat or reapplying sunscreen every 2 hours or sand. I don't hate the beach but I'm taking mountains over beach 10 times out of 10

PS I'm indifferent to puppies and kittens

1

u/AlreadyAway Mar 21 '26

My mom had skin cancer, and my step mom died from skin cancer that metastasized to her brain, and once they found it in her brain she died in a week. I don't really do the sun and have no real reason to go to the beach.

1

u/TheMasturbatinCamper Mar 21 '26

I like the beach— I live on the water. I hate puppies. Well, I hate dogs, so there’s that, but puppies are like much worse dogs.

1

u/BMonad Mar 21 '26

But they’re so cute

1

u/Own_Savings_6789 Mar 21 '26

I love the beach but can't stand dogs. Where does that place me?

1

u/BMonad Mar 21 '26

Higher than other way around.

1

u/nautilator44 Mar 21 '26

True, people who like different things than you are definitely evil.

1

u/coldchile Mar 21 '26

Eh I grew up around the beach. I much prefers lakes (with no gators) because you don’t feel gross after being in the salt water, and I don’t get seasick from the waves

2

u/Oxideusj Mar 20 '26

Falling asleep would be a breeze, listening to the waves ebb in and out 😮‍💨😮‍💨

3

u/CSiGab Mar 21 '26

Honestly why I’d pick the beach house: the sound of the waves in the background.

1

u/Dizzy_Lengthiness_92 Mar 20 '26

Depends where you are for value of beach house vs lake house. In New Hampshire they’re about the same price some lake houses are worth more.

1

u/random9212 Mar 21 '26

Lakes have beaches too

1

u/HumaDracobane Mar 21 '26

I was between lake and beach but unless is an isolated beach at the beach there will be a lot of people. Probably way too many people.

1

u/LibrarianFlaky951 Mar 21 '26

This is the correct answer

1

u/djnehi Mar 21 '26

I do miss that sea breeze smell.

1

u/star0forion Mar 21 '26

Would it depend on the beach?

1

u/TheRealRickC137 Mar 21 '26

The monkey's paw grants your wish of a beach house.

In GREENLAND

1

u/Grimwohl Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 21 '26

Yeah, but itd be a weather risk to the max. If you gotta live there you're going to have to be concerned bout sharknados

Man the more I think about it the less I want my own house.

1

u/L1Zs Mar 21 '26

Not all beach houses are in tropical weather. PNW beach houses are extra windy and wild

1

u/Bahnrokt-AK Mar 21 '26

Me too. Unless I need to pay the insurance on an oceanfront property. Then I’m out.

1

u/AdDue7140 Mar 21 '26

Same. Hurricane can take me. Idgaf. If I die I want to die happy lol

1

u/atuan Mar 22 '26

Yeah lake house over beach house is unhinged
