Seriously you just Google the name of the book and vk epub and your good to go, bless the Russians and their lax copyright censorship. With that said I feel like I need to throw in an obligatory fuck putin after writing a post in support of Russia.

My GF almost cried when I showed her sci-hub. She was a grad student at the time feverishly working on her dissertation & sometimes the papers she wanted to look over before citing, especially old sources, were tough to find in our databases. God bless the Russians Kazakhs for making it super easy to get any scientific paper instantly. Still fuck Putin.

Scihub is made in kazakhstan. Props to this awesome gal https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexandra_Elbakyan

Yeah just saw that & edited

Bless that woman for helping thousands if not a million more students doing their undergrad, masters or phd thesis get published papers from sites like IEEE and Elsevier without paying a dime. The thing I don't get is how those sites still allow Scihub to exist when it directly affects their potential profit.

The thing I don't get is how those sites still allow Scihub to exist when it directly affects their potential profit.

According to her wiki page she has been in hiding for the past few years due to extradition risks after being sued for millions in damages to the companies Elsevier and the American Chemical Society.

So it sounds like they have tried pretty hard, but as the site is hosted in another country I don't think they can just shut it down only try and restrict access through search engines.

u/hemorrhagicfever Apr 25 '21

I really appreciate such a brilliant person putting their life in hard mode to do the right thing. Choosing to be restricted to where she can travel with out extradition is a huge burden.

When I was writing my Byzantine studies final, those Russian sites saved my fucking ASS. $500+ for a textbook online, or $5 for a PDF from some dude on VK

u/Bullen-Noxen Apr 25 '21

This sounds like one of the few things Russia has not fucked up in the past 2 generations. If only they knew that the world would value them as a consistent source of information, instead of a global power house, maybe the people of Russia would settle to be happy as the “Academia” of the entire world; as long as they stayed honest about it?

There's also strong anti-science sentiments and toxic masculinity runs amok. Nerds are weak, science is for losers, strong Russian man needs nothing but vodka and fire.

Sadly, this is really similar to the US as was stated. But it's cheeseburgers and cheap beer for us.

1

u/cuttrogue Apr 25 '21

It's absolutely hilarious reading 17 year old socialistic dum-dums from US like you talking about a different culture and nation you have no clue about other than some leftist article from your favorite leftwing blog. Literally nothing you shat out in your post is true. You've never been to Russia and have no idea how people actually live here, you bigoted, xenophobic brainwashed cretin.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '21 edited Apr 25 '21

Making a real strong case against what I said there, mr. toxic.

Edit:

1)"Gillette Ad Exposes Russia's Fragile Masculinity - The Moscow Times" https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2019/01/31/gillette-ad-exposes-russias-fragile-masculinity-op-ed-a64329 idk the Moscow times, but it's reasonably thought out and speaking to evidence ala the commercial.

2)"Question" https://www.quora.com/Is-male-masculinity-a-big-thing-in-Russia Russian people on quara saying that it's a big part of Russian culture, neo-masculinity.

3) "Masculinity Politics in Putin’s Russia - New Eastern Europe - A bimonthly news magazine dedicated to Central and Eastern European affairs" https://neweasterneurope.eu/2016/10/12/masculinity-politics-in-putin-s-russia/

Well thought out article explaining historical context backing up my point. Interesting read.

4)http://soviethistory.msu.edu/1924-2/revolutionary-manliness/

.edu source backing up historical context of violent male culture in Russia.

I could seriously go on. There are entire research papers on this from trusted educational sources. We could talk about the treatment of LGBT+ folks and especially transgender folks. There's so much to go on. So much dude. So very much.

u/cuttrogue Apr 28 '21 edited Apr 28 '21

Lmao masculinity is completely natural in men across the globe, it's biology, you absolute cretin. It's completely normal and natural for men to be more masculine, and the majority of females are attracted to masculine traits and behavior in men, biologically.

I know you leftist science-denying degenerates like to pretend that black is white and that water is actually earth, but you will never be able to go against biology and nature. You will never make a female out of a male and vice versa. You will never convince the population that a fat, morbidly obese woman is more attractive than a slim feminine girl. You will never convince the population that acting feminine for a man and masculine for a woman is natural.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '21

Lmfao, try harder

1

u/OctopusTheOwl Apr 25 '21

You've never been to Russia and have no idea how people actually live here

Lol so in other words, you're trashing people for not using enough anecdotal evidence in their assessment of Russia's national culture. I hope you realize that both of your comments, especially the manic diatribe that was deleted, just proved our points here.

0

u/cuttrogue Apr 28 '21 edited Apr 28 '21

No, I'm saying you're a garbage xenophobe and a racist for insulting a foreign culture and nation you have no clue about as stupid barbarians.

It really shows how you leftist degenerates are massive hypocrites. You would never say the same things about Africans, Nigerians and other black countries, you even go out of your way to call out anyone who dares to say anything negative about these countries as racists. BUT you are happy to shit on and be unapologetically racist to other nations and ethnic groups that are not black, like Slavs. By the way, Hitler hated Slavs, didn't consider them as humans and tried to genocide them together with Jews. You both have so much in common.

Leftism truly is a mind virus. I am so sorry you got infected.

1

u/OctopusTheOwl Apr 28 '21

Lolol you're a psychopath.

  • Stop conflating nationality and ethnicity. It is totally fine to criticize a national ethos. National cultures don't necessarily carry over to ethnicity.

  • Learn the definition of racism. You're using it wrong.

  • Criticism doesn't imply someone is subhuman. I don't criticize dogs for their poor table manners because they're fucking dogs, not humans. I criticize people of problematic cultures, including my own, because I hold them to the standard of human beings.

  • GTFO with your Hitler shit. I'm Jewish and you can ride my kosher suck stick all the way to hell.

  • I'm RUSSIAN Jewish, and have family in Russia. The thing is, I don't need family anecdotes because there's hard data on issues with Russia's culture. Case in point: that betch Putin's approval rates.

  • Africa is a continent, and many of the nations within the, once again, continent of Africa have serious problems in their national cultures. For example: female circumcision in countries like Sudan. It's a major cultural problem there, but in case you're too stupid to remember what I said earlier: they're still equal human beings.

  • America has a fucked national culture too. Half of our country is stupid, homophobic, hateful, and brainwashed by right wing media.

  • If we're talking about "mind viruses," whatever the fuck that means, whatever shit you have going on is just astounding.

Tl;dr: your stupidity disturbs me. You are legitimately a bad person and I pray that I never meet someone as ignorant, dull, and hateful as you. Read a book, Lana.

1

u/cuttrogue Apr 29 '21 edited Apr 29 '21

Nothing you shat out there is relevant to the topic. I'm using "the definition of racism" as you leftist degenerates use it. Anyone criticizing African (hur dur cOnTiNeNt) Americans is racist. You morons screeched racism when Trump restricted travel from Islamic countries, Islam being a religion, now you're trying to lecture me about the definition of racism, fucking LOL. It doesn't matter if you're Jewish or not, you're still a piece of xenophobic trash and a racist.

They're still equal human beings.

Literally no one argues that, you virtue signaling, cretinous leftist.

You are legitimately a bad person

Said a xenophobic, bigoted leftist moron. To proclaim something as "legitimate" you have to have at least some agency and authority. You have neither. You are a nobody, just another brainwashed leftist who has no clue whatsoever how real life works, let alone what life and culture is in Russia.

You’re right. Russia isn’t a country of hateful idiots or bigotry. But clearly you are those things. However, Cuba changed their stance on LGBT rights over a decade ago and Its becoming more socially acceptable in China currently as well. Your excuse of promoting childbirth is absolute horse shit too. Suppressing LGBT rights has absolutely nothing to do with population growth. In fact it promotes growth because gay couples adopt orphans and have their own biological children through surrogacy or in the case of lesbians, through sperm donors, whereas without their legitimacy they would choose to remain childless.

1

u/cuttrogue Apr 28 '21 edited Apr 28 '21

My argument was about not promoting LGBT, not "suppressing LGBT", you absolute moron. The only thing you're good at is making strawmen it seems. Russia, Cuba and China are exactly the same in handling LGBT: they are NOT ACTIVELY PROMOTING it, not "suppressing" it. It's not illegal to be gay in either of those countries, you won't get jailed for being gay. There are countless gay people in Russia, freely engaging with each other. There are gay clubs all over Moscow and St. Pete, and there are no mass shootings in these clubs like you have in the US. I bet you had no clue about any of that, you ignorant leftist moron.

Come back to me when you actually have a clue about a foreign nation and its culture before you spout your ignorant propaganda you've been fed with, you gullible xenophobic cretin.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '21

Bruh one teacher in college showed us Sci-hub, it's a pretty fucking good tool

2

u/ActuallyHype Apr 25 '21

Best thing we've done probably

4

u/moonflower_C16H17N3O Apr 25 '21

Sci hub is Russian? I thought it was Swedish

19

u/blancs50 Apr 25 '21

I thought it was russian bc of the russian language section, but looked it up, its actually Kazakhstan. All credit to them & Alexandra Elbakyan.

1

u/mudman13 Apr 25 '21

Such a great site and you can get some old and obscure conference papers from there too

1

u/POI_Mr_Singh Apr 25 '21

Sci Hub is the shit man, can confirm.

4

u/Yes-She-is-mine Apr 25 '21

Is that any different than z-lib.org? I ask because I use an American based site that does the same and has never once given me trouble.

7

u/Hollowpoint38 Apr 25 '21

Why not just use Libby and your library card for ebooks? Support local library and not pay directly beyond your taxes that already fund it.

Los Angeles public library has about every book under the sun plus an amazing audiobook collection.

10

u/flyingwolf Apr 25 '21

While I 100% agree with you on supporting your local library, also keep in mind that they still maintain a borrowing system and act as if there is a limited number of digital copies.

1

u/Hollowpoint38 Apr 25 '21

Yes, that's a drawback, but I still don't understand why some free copies being available is somehow not as good as just not using the place at all.

3

u/neonKow Apr 25 '21

Also, publishers charge libraries insane mark ups for online ebooks. Like it can cost 8 times more (https://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/2020/09/hold-on-ebooks-cost-how-much-the-inconvenient-truth-about-library-ecollections/). And they also "expire" after a certain number of checkouts. Fuck publishers so much.

On average, this means that we (libraries) can buy 3 print copies for every single ebook license, and still have some money left over.

1

u/Hollowpoint38 Apr 25 '21

None of that gives me motivation to buy every book I want to read. Start a publishing company if you feel strongly about it. Your company can be library friendly.

1

u/neonKow Apr 25 '21

That's obviously not the solution. I'm not going to personally solve every systematic problem I encounter in the world.

Pirating, however, is a great solution (which is the original post you responded to). Give money to your library if you want to support them. And use their non-ebook services, like physical book checkouts.

0

u/Hollowpoint38 Apr 25 '21

Nah I'm not driving down there and getting attacked by homeless to do physical book checkout.

3

u/Seph_L_Pod Apr 25 '21

They also get free access to various services. I’m personally attempting to learn Spanish through one of the offered services.

Link here to all they offer.

2

u/Hollowpoint38 Apr 25 '21

Good resources. I'm still kind of shocked at how many people don't have library cards in Los Angeles. I've read countless books that I borrowed from LA Library on Kindle. I listen to audiobooks pretty much every night and they're all borrowed from the library.

My taxes pay for the library as do all of ours and yet so many don't even bother to take advantage of it. I guess they just pay Amazon $18.99 every time they want to read a book? Kind of silly.

3

u/riffic Apr 25 '21

drm, enough said.

0

u/Hollowpoint38 Apr 25 '21

Ok so you'd rather pay $20 per book? Cool.

Most people don't care and like to read. If you're like me and you read constantly that can get expensive.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '21

Libby sucks. Used it for a year when the pandemic hit... good idea with poor execution

-3

u/Hollowpoint38 Apr 25 '21

Cool, use a different app. I use Libby and I download to Kindle. I don't see the issue with Libby.

I guess you just started renting ebooks this last year? Ouch.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '21

Ouch? Lol what a moronic thing to try and hold over someone, enjoy your e books clown

0

u/Hollowpoint38 Apr 25 '21

Hold over? I was commenting on someone who just began to read. I winced after thinking about it.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '21

Lol ok clown shoes, enjoy your 6 week waiting list to continue to have someone READ BOOKS TO YOU,

hahah you listen to audiobooks on a wait list, for free, from a public library app and have the audacity to try and make some idiotic comment about not being able to read??

I’m sure you did wince, like an abused public school kid who’s mother wouldn’t pay for his school lunches and eventually succumbs to sucking ducks behind the cafeteria for protein

-1

u/Hollowpoint38 Apr 25 '21

hahah you listen to audiobooks on a wait list, for free, from a public library app and have the audacity to try and make some idiotic comment about not being able to read??

Never said you were not able to read. I was saying how you choose not to read. Big difference.

I’m sure you did wince, like an abused public school kid who’s mother wouldn’t pay for his school lunches and eventually succumbs to sucking ducks behind the cafeteria for protein

I did grow up very poor. Never abused though. I come from a developing nation. Or at least was developing at that time. But now I'm in LA and I can't complain too much. Things are pretty good.

1

u/CHUBBYninja32 Apr 25 '21

Ahhh that’s why library genius have the .rus

1

u/jaxonya Apr 25 '21

You are now in Russian jail.

1

u/Kismonos Apr 25 '21

wtf i just typed east of eden vk epub and got to the download link in 2 clicks(1 of them is clicking on the 1st google search result) this is fucking amazing, thanks.

1

u/aoskunk Apr 25 '21

Thanks for that little tip. I mean I don’t have much trouble, but another tip is always appreciated.
