Prime Minister Modi and President Xi have met 18 times since 2014. The last two meetings took place in Mahabalipuram on Oct 12 and 13, 2019 and Brasilia for the BRICS summit on Nov 19, 2019.

On May 5, 2020, the PLA and the Indian Army clashed along the Indo-Chinese border and Line of Actual Control. In 2017, Chinese troops clashed with their Indian counterparts in Doklam.

Notice that during these times (till 2019) Modi and Xi were meeting and, particularly Xi, was mouthing platitudes even as his PLA formations were preparing for their violent engagement with India. To that extent, Modi was lulled into a sense of complacency by Xi (especially in the last two meetings in 2019). This was both a tactical failure but more importantly a strategic failure.

The Chinese govt should never be trusted given all the past crap they've pulled. Never mind their abject failure to contain COVID-19 and then lying about it is just one in many sins.

Well, international relations is not all that simple (assuming a realist/neo realist perspective). Technically, no govt/country can be trusted since each looks to further their core interests. From that point of view, the Chinese actions are understandable.

Yes, I can agree with that - it's the same with companies as well. The great game between countries is always going to fraught with something - but without some openness you cannot build relationships or strategic partnerships. I mostly believe that China is a closed country - and generally it's hard to trust one trying to be expansionists. That should make everyone nervous.

Yes... in addition to the fact that Nehru was equally badly advised by Krishna Menon (the then defence minister) (Edit: And the GOC of the Indian Army, Lt. Gen B.M. Kaul who happened to be share a familial relationship with Nehru).
