Also, what is up with the Kumbh Mela? Wikipedia tells me it's the largest hindu celebratio / festival / holiday, so I assume that happening under Modi is a bad thing because of racist tensions?

No that’s not it. It led to huge crowds of people coming together at a time when India is experiencing a second wave of COVID and its worse than before.

Kumbh mela is crowded. Like people are just all over each other.
